Hi RGJOHNS, I like the S&W 4.25" 1911PD with Crimson Trace grips. I like it VERY MUCH and now that I have learned what not to do when cleaning, I have not had a faliure in just shy of 5k rounds.(which are 10 to 1 ratio of 230gr@840f/s to 185gr+P@1090f/s) I can not ask for a more accurate gun which can feed a just fired empty from mag using the slidestop from slidelock. After all of that the gun comes with all the features i wanted and now it also comes with a $100 rebate until April30. Win-win in my book. Also i have carried it all day in a Don Humes IWB with a spare mag and forgot many times it was on. I like the Galco royal carry better but Humes works very well for a lot less $. Hope it helps RGJOHNS.

In my opinion there is no "best". I would suggest you rent all those guns you mention and shoot 100 rounds through each. Yep, it will cost you a few dollars. Buy the one you shoot the best.

I've been carrying a Rock River Armory Govt model 1911 for a year now in an Uncle Mikes Sidekick IWB holster. 0 problems, I've put about 1500 rounds of assorted ammo through it without trouble. Fit, finish, and workmanship are as good as I have seen on any non-custom .45. accuracy is all I could want for personal defense or range shooting. I have experieance with Colts, Auto Ordanance, LLama and other makes and this is the only one I can honestly say I trust to go bang when needed and hit what needs hitting, and at $400 its about 2/3 the price of so called inexpensive 1911's from Taurus and other makers.

I agree with you curries103. IMO Kimber shoots out of this world. Never had a problem. Close to 2500 rounds.

This is what it looks like.

If you notice all the edges are buffed down, smooth like a womans body.  It doesn't have any sharp edges to get hung up on any piece of clothing.

RGJ,

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the makes you mentioned. Para, Kimber, Springfield and Sig make fine guns.

Good luck with your decision and post a pic of what you get.

I carry a 1911 much of the time, and it's not for the willy-nilly carry guy. I am 6'1 200lbs, and I still have to dress for the 1911. It's cold now, so I get to cheat with a jacket. In the summer, it's a whole new deal. A sterdy belt is a must, and the cargo shorts will  a just piss you off. I wear a snubby for those times. Most of the time, I just look like a guy hiden a big gun. That's ok with my though. It may not be ok with others. I just know that I feel so much better when I can curl my fingers under the edge of my floppy shirt and feel that big ol' hole in the muzzle. There is much to be said for the comfort of a 1911 and 8 rounds of 230 grain JHP.

Since I have received a few PMs in relation to this thread about which 1911 or even which Single Action revolver I carry..... (Must be the cowboy image) ;D  ;D, I might as well answer here.

No, I don't carry a SA revolver.  ;) The SA is for cowboy competition, but if I didn't have any other option, I would to some extent be comfortable with it and in a 4 3/4" and maybe in this holster (http://www.mernickleholsters.com/ps/ps6sar8.html).

But as long as there are options and if I can choose and pick, it would be a 1911 or a gun with a 1911 design.

My bedside and carry gun, is a .45 ACP Para LTC (http://www.para-usa.com/new/product_pistol.php?id=3). The holster is a Fobus model C21B (https://secure.fobusholster.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=276).

Why the LTC? Well, I don't have any long explanation. It is a 1911. I am very familiar and comfortable with a 1911 after my IPSC years, it is a compact version, (4.25"), price was good when I was in shopping mode and it works!

I know, I sound like Walt Rauch... short and to the point ;D

I've had this gun for about 3 years and with both factory and reloaded ammo, it has never failed me.

Great points.

One more - it's Para's version of the Commander.  And the Commander-length 1911 is one of my all time favorite pistols.

It is, of course, a matter of personal choice.  I am more than happy with my Dan Wesson Classic Commander Bobtail.  It is a bit less bulky than most, which makes it easier to conceal.  A few months ago, during a very busy period in my life, I took it to the gunsmith at one of my favorite stores for a detailed cleaning.  Not having worked on a Dan Wesson 1911 before, he was amazed at the quality of the pistol.  As for accuracy, it's a hell of a lot better than I am, which always keeps me stretching to come close to its potential.  Put it on a rest and you can shoot flies off a log all day long.  I would not use hollow-points in any 1911.  Browning didn't design it for them.  Concealed carry is strictly for social work anyway, and I think the only socially responsible round is the Glaser - in any calibre.

Later,

Bill  (k39noodles)

I have and will continue to carry a lightly modified Colt Officers ACP LW with Federal 230 HS.  Am slimming down a bit due to Dr's orders so I will have to adjust my wardrobe and ammo to Cor-Bon DPX when cold weather arrives (if I can afford to buy new clothes) but for now I use a "fanny pack".  I'm 61 and no one pays any attention at all.

I have to go with the Government model, because the weapon and round were made for each other. The shorter barrels have issues with feeding and accuracy sometimes. I just dont trust the short barrels and the .45ACP thats why I went with  a .40 in the short barrell. As far as maker, not many that wont run fine, little tweak and break in, about 200 rounds and your good to go.

The best one that I have for carry would be my 12-shot Para LDA, after I'm sure it will function properly all the time. I had some problems so I sent it in and they installed a whole different kind of recoil system. I haven't shot it since then. It's a little bit bigger than my P-10, which works great despite only having a 3" barrel, but the grip is so short I put Peace grip extensions on both mags. That makes it as tall as the 12 shot .45 and the barrel is only 1/2" shorter. The single-stacks would be a little thinner and easier to conceal but hold 6 or 6 rounds less.

I will probably be struck by lightening for saying this, but if you dont know what 1911 is good for ccw, than I suggest carrying something besides it. Glock, XD, M&P. This is no diss on you, but 1911's are heavy, more uncomfortable, (realize I put more, nothing is comfortable.) and really unless you are really familiar with a 1911 and shot one a million times it is not the best for someone who isn't a gun expert. It is my opinion that like a J-frame S&W that a 1911 should only be carried for ccw by people who shoot alot and shoot 1911's.

But look this is all my opinion. 1911 is the all time greatest gun, but it is a gun that shout be respected. It is not a dummy gun. And most times, unlike a Glock\polymer wondergun, the 1911 doesnt run better the more you beat it up. You need to maintain it, understand it, love it.

This is all for ccw only. If you want one to shoot and have fun with then great buy a 100 of them, but you must remember you are trusting your life to this if you will be carrying it. I would never buy a backhoe to dig a hole cause I cant operate one, but i will buy a shovel.

1911 operating system is probably the hardest to get used to, not a beginners carry pistol , not a no brainer like the DAOs with safe trigger technology. They take quite abit of practice and what I guess you would call muscle memory or just plain repetitious memory to wipe that safety or you could end up in a bad spot.  Here is probably the best 1911 site on the web     http://www.sightm1911.com/lib/other/why_the_m1911.htm

My choice for carry: An Ed Brown Kobra Carry in a Milt Sparks Summer Special.  It's a commander size bob-tail 1911 and I don't think its all that heavy for daily carry, though you need a jacket or Hawiian shirt.  My second choice is a Detonics CombatMaster, also in an IWB holster (from Rafter S Gunleather).  I'm a 1911 guy and own 8 or 9 of 'em, including a some Kimbers, a couple of Les Baers, and an old Colt ex-GI.  They're all in .45 ACP and I love'em all.
