Title: Taurus 24/7 OSS 45ACP
Post by: GI Joe on January 08, 2011, 02:37:50 PM
I have been comtemplating selling my M686 revolver to get a 45ACP OSS. Anyone out there have one they can elaborate on it ?
Reliablity? How many rounds have you through it? I have read so many horror stories about Taurus in general I dont know if they are dependable or not.

The "horror" stories about Taurus covered some of their semi-auto's, however, over the last several years, they have stepped up. The Model 92, Beretta clone, has a solid history. My friend Geoff has the 145SSP Millennium Pro in 45, and has probably a thousand rounds through it with no issues. It's damn ugly, but he shoots it every week, religiously.

For that matter,

The 686, with the internal locks, have been a PITA for S&W also, and as of Mar. 09, have phased them out of production.

What appeals to you and the Taurus?
Price?
Grip?
Full Length Guide Rod? (Taken From Glock)
Slide safety like the 1911?
Take down lever from Sig?

I think Taurus makes a decent pistol, for the money. A combination of what went right on other lines of pistols.  Can you test one at a local range? I like the grips, it fits my hand very well, I have shot the OSS/45 and it functioned fine.

Well actually the only things that really appeal to me about the OSS are the price and the 5 inch barrel. My 686 is a 1985 model so it is all steel (no MIM) no locks etc. I think that the only advantage any auot would have would be faster reloads and easier carry.

I used to buy -shoot-and trade handguns quite a bit (more wisdom comes with age) I should have kept them all even the the not so good ones! I have had the following autos, Ruger P89,P90,P95,P97, Berretta 96, Taurus 92, Glock 17(still own)23,21,HK USP 45, 1911s by Kimber,Auto Ordance,Springfield,Colt,Brolin Arms,SIg 226,220,239

So I am no expert but I have learned as revolvers are autos are also all similar and many of what I used to have were quite good but I got caught up in wanting the newest latest greatest, etc.

Nothing wrong with that GI Joe. I'd find a range with a rental dept. Generally, they are dirty, sometimes cleaned once or twice a week, and have had many rounds fired.

If your serious, invest a box of ammo, and test drive one. The P89 was a tank and dependable. If you have issues, check out the EAA Witness, FN, even a slightly used M+P 45, are going for a fair price. The striker fired pistol industry has come a long way. Competition is fierce between brands, so they try to resolve "issues" ASAP.

Seems your exp. will lead you the right direction. My Glock 21, 45, is BIG & UGLY, but the damn thing will always go bang. Plenty of pistols to consider.

Good Hunting.

Keep the .357 if it doesn't have the lock it's the better gun.
