Steel Challenge Moves To Florida In 2012

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — The Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA) the national governing body for the sport of Speed Shooting and organizer of the Steel Challenge, announced that 2011 will be the final year that the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships will be held in California. Citing the increasingly unfriendly political climate of the Golden State, officials announced that beginning in 2012 the Steel Challenge will be held in Frostproof, Florida, at the Universal Shooting Academy.

“The decision to move was not made lightly and for the last year we have been in discussions with ranges across the country in search of a new home for the association’s premier match,” explained Dave Thomas, executive director of SCSA.

In addition to California’s political climate which has often restricted the growth of the match due to the prohibition in the state of certain types of firearms, the need to expand the sport of speed shooting on the East Coast was also a key factor in the move.

“We have been working in the last couple years to expand the Steel Challenge format, particularly through the formation of the Scholastic Steel Challenge,” said Scott Moore, director or the Scholastic Steel Challenge. “With such a strong base of practical shooters in the southeast region of the country, the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit headquartered in Ft. Benning, Georgia, and the obvious differences in political views you find in the south, the move to Florida in 2012 puts SCSA in a great position to grow over the next couple years.”

Response to the move among sponsors, who were informed earlier last week, has been extremely positive according to Thomas and Moore who noted that industry support for the Steel Challenge has always been strong. They pointed to the growing list of industry partners for the Scholastic Steel Challenge as evidence of the sport’s long term potential to draw new shooters and the value the program has among manufacturers.

While 2012 marks the end of the World Speed Shooting Championships in California, SCSA plans future major matches in the state and is working with Steel Challenge co-founder Mike Dalton to schedule a sanctioned regional championship at the Piru, California, range facility which will host its final world championship shoot this August.

“We recognized all along the importance California plays in Steel Challenge competition and are pleased that the tradition of ringing steel in the canyons of Piru will continue as part of the future regional championship series,” said Thomas.

BOLD is mine

I like this move!  CA needs to feel the pain of losing major shooting sport venues and manufacturers!

The only way they will feel the pain is if gun makers stop selling to LEOs in the state. That would get their attention if the usual suspects stopped offering products. Sadly, that won't happen as the economic temptation to defect is far too strong. Still, I would rather spend my money in a gun friendly state than one that was not. Maybe it will get noticed.

Good move, IMHO, for the reasons mentioned in the text of the article.

Now, the shooting community (especially southeastern steel shooters) needs to get behind them and do what it can to strengthen the support for the SCSA.... to show them (as well as other sanctioning bodies and vendors) that the move will be fruitful and worthwhile.

This is step one.  Step two is that shooters in California need to make this known to the businesses that will be losing business.  During the 2011 match it needs to be made loud and clear that this is the last.  Then in 2012 there needs to be a flood of postcards sent from Frostproof, FL to the Chamber of Commerce and politicians saying "I'm in Florida spending $X's that would have come to your community if you hadn't pushed us away with your punitive regulations that restrict our sport.

Boycotts only work when the one you are boycotting knows they are losing, and when they know what they are losing.

We need more events and businesses to follow this lead!

Make sure to send one to Arnie pointing out that his bankrupt state lost $X in tax revenue on every item you purchase at the competition.

As FQ and Tom posted, Barrett requires ALL 50 cal. used by LE, or NG to be factory serviced once a year at the Barrett facility.

Since Ca. banned the import/sales of the 50's, Barrett complied with Ca. law, and voided all warranties, and cannot send those in his possession back to Ca. It's against state law.

Spoke to the Barrett reps at the NRA Convention. It is ligit.

With Moonbeam at the sinking ships helm,.....seems the Steel Challenge will be just the beginning.

Way to go Kalifornia!!! Keep up the good work.

Moonbeam ?  They're screwed.

yep, he said he would only run 1 term.

actually what he has done so far has been pretty good.  He has changed alot since he was governer last time.  that does not mean I think hes great or anything like that.  At this point, I have no feelings about him either way.( atleast for this term)

I will say this, in his 1st two weeks of office he has already saved us about 2 mil a year.  While its not alot it is a step in the right direction.
Barret got pissed that his weapons were being used to ban 50 cals...  he did the right thing for the right reasons.  companys like sti did them for the wrong reasons...IE money and PR
