Title: BATF to ban Saiga?
Post by: ratcatcher55 on January 21, 2011, 09:38:47 AM
http://www.saysuncle.com/2011/01/20/atf-to-announce-shotgun-ruling-monday/

From Tam:

Good Night, Saiga?
ATF to announce a ruling on the Russian-made Saiga self-loading shotguns on Monday.

The Saigas have been skating on thin bureaucratic ice for a long time. Only the hen’s-tooth scarcity of large-capacity magazines kept them from joining the USAS-12 on the “Destructive Device” list (Remember, every shotgun bigger than a .410 is technically a DD, without a "sporting purpose" exemption) but their surging popularity in 3-gun competition has driven more large magazines to the market. Apparently that doesn't qualify as a "sporting purpose", since no clay pigeons, feathered critters, or stack-barrel Perazzis wielded by Vice Presidents are involved.

It’s awfully hard for the ATF to allow the importation and sale of Saigas with a straight face while keeping the USAS-12 on the no-go list. (The answer, of course, is to de-list the USAS-12...)

No sporting purpose......

Now that is ironic since sawed off shotguns were banned because they had no military use.

I guess 3 gun isn't sporting enough.

Another low priced gun that is going to go through the roof. Sporting purpose? What is that exactly? Clays, birds, three gun? Who cares? And since when was the 2A about sporting purposes anyway? One of my (admittedly many) beefs with W was that he didn't do away with ATF rule 922R when he was President. He could have done it with the stroke of a pen and a GOP Congress wouldn't have said him nay. We would have had cheap AKs  and $.10 a round Norinco ammo again and this nonsense wouldn't even have been an issue. >:(

The "shotties" first, than the AK variants, than this one, than this one, than that one, than certainly that one, and oh boy, we better ban that one also....

New BATF(E) boss, Travers, will pull some sneaky crap, BHO will declare plausible deniability.......

sneaky bastards...in plain site

Again he doesn't need to be sneaky. 922R is there in plain sight. You know as a Saiga owner that its all a nod and a wink. Five minutes with a dremel and you have an AK and the company designed them that way. A mag being 3 US parts and a stock 2? And what's the difference between a US and foriegn made part anyway? Is it more sporting? ::) W let us down by not doing away with this hypocritical nonsense  from the Clinton years when he had the chance. Now Travers doesn't have to do anything but enforce the letter and spirit of the rule and Saiga is done. There isn't a legal leg to stand on to complain about it. >:(

I'll bet as the loophole was there to get the "hunting" version of the AK's in, Tapco, and other American parts manufacturers, will suddenly look very appealing to importing 922 compliant shotguns and rifles.

How does this differ from Euro shotguns? Or S. American firearms....

Ah, yes, the muddy waters of bureaucracy just pertain to evil black firearms,.....not a British, or Italian made "traditional" firearm.

You know, one can reach their bag limit of quail faster with high cap shotguns.... ::) Not those silly O/U's... ;)

If there are ATF folk(s) at the SHOT show, (and why wouldn't there be), MB, will at least get a copy of the ruling Monday.

To see what's next on the "can't be available to civilians" list.... :-\

IDK, Tdubya.  It could pertain to ALL SG's, or new guns like the Kel-Tech, or just as far as Saiga is concerned. The rumors flourish when the ATF says s*&t like this!

We'll find out when the "letter" gets released, I guess.   :'(

OK. If this turns out to be the case, what are we going to do about it? If we just post ad nauseum about this and do nothing, then they have won.

We have to contact our elected representatives to let them know we are not taking this sh!t and demand they do something about it!
