My birthday is coming up at the end of March and my wife has told me that I can get a new pistol! That maybe sounds understanding but the fact is, she's one up on me right now so she OWE'S me that pistol.
I'm thinking small gun, big bore.

Back to the snubbies, huh? I would stay away from any of the super light Chater Arms. I had one recently and after firing two cylander loads slow fire you had to pound the extractor rod on the table to get the empty brass out. That was just plain .38spl.
-
The new S&W Nite Guard series looks great!
-
It's been tough thinking about the snubbies and the bottom feeders...just can't decide because there are so many to choose from. It would also be fun just to head out to a few shops and look for what strikes me. That could be REALLY fun.
-
Same dilemma, same interest, coming in May. Let us know what you bring home. The choices make my head spin. Mac.
-
I'm going through a similar thing right now.
First the GFs Mosquito has got to go. So a decision has to be made on a replacement .22 for her.
2nd (and more important) is I finally got around to getting my C&R (FFL03) license and wouldn't you know now I cannot find the Ishapore (Enfield) in 308!! :'( :( Even the Spanish LaGuardias are sold out! :'( As well as the P-38 9mm. A month ago these guns were everywhere! DAMN! >:( >:( (have I used enough exclamation points?)
Anyone know of these guns out there? ???
-
As I suspected, Haz, the nation has picked up on the Presidential election concerns expressed by DRTV Forum members. It's dog eat dog out there in the gun bazaars. Cats are exempt from panic buying, as they promptly reacted to the early signs.. Mac.

Well Keystone is looking for the Enfield for me and Samco says they should have the Spanish Guadias in a couple of months.
What do you think of a CZ 82 with 2 mags, holster and cleaning rod for 200?
-
I was going to say, Birthday gun for a February 28th birthday - the signs are obvious -
SIG P228 or P229. Or a Smith and Wesson Model 59 or a Model 60.
Actually, the 60 ALMOST fits your big-bore, small gun motif in .357 Magnum. Big muzzle blast at least.
-
Or a Ruger Alaskan now that a snube in a BIG way!

Hey Hazmat I know you probably have but I noticed that there were a couple places in Shotgun News that had P-38's in them so I thought you might want to check it out. Also www.fgsinc.8m.com Has a unissued new for $550.00

And after 10 or 12 rounds of .357 out of a M60 your had starts to swell!

the alaskan is what i what on april 28 :)

I say you are dang right. From the posts you've made lately I'd say she owes you two pistols.
I do like my titanium snubbie (Taurus)...and the J-frames are great without saying. Maybe in .357 and a Charter Arms in 44?
What about the slightly larger SP01 Ruger....in maybe .327 mag...just to be different?

I like the way you think, that she owe's me two. I'll just take one of each! I keep looking at the Taurus snubbies and the J-frames are a given, but I'm not sure I can go the distance for a new one. I would definitely go 357 on them. I saw a 44 Bulldog last week and was disappointed- it seemed rough.
Since getting the GP161 back and feeling the action on that, the SP is much more attractive too.
I'm also thinking about the new Kahr 45- I forget the model #- but it's a little less expensive than the others. Also there's the 3" XD in 9mil, and I like the look of the CZ Rami (the all metal version)(2075).
See- I never know when the NEXT gun is coming, so it's so hard to decide!
-
The Guns&Ammo report on the Kahr, TP45 just landed in the mail today. Reading now.... Mac.
-
Well, I pulled the trigger today (sorry, couldn't help it).
I was looking at a few 45s and wincing thinking about the last time I bought ammo, and saw
the Ruger SR9--there you go...my first striker fired pistol. We'll see how that goes.
I took it all apart and cleaned it. It looks pretty good, although it might need to be polished
up around the feed ramp- a little roughness there.
The weather is lousy, but maybe I'll get out tomorrow for a little while.
I just hope wifey doesn't pull that, "You have to wait 'till your birthday" crap.
-
Great choice. If I were picking, then I would have gone with either a .357 SP101 Ruger or a Para Warthog in .45 acp.

I was thinking about all those little 1911 guns, but almost all are around a thousand bucks...I was in the "under $500" range this time around.

In case you have some Grandma's birthday cash left over, RIA sells a pretty good 1911 for under $400. Made in the Philippines as I recall, and apparently very nicely done. MB has noted it here and even spent some time on it on Downrange radio a couple months back.
-
That last post wasn't very clear. I had been thinking about the MINI 1911s like the Para PDA, the Springfield EMP, etc. Most of THEM are around $1K. If it wasn't for the fact that I'm limited in how often I can buy, I'd have a RIA 1911 in a minute. I've heard a lot of good about them.
-
We got a small break in the weather this morning and I got out and put 100 rounds of 115gr Remington UMC through the SR9. It's all very stiff of course. I used the little mag loader they provide which was very thoughtful considering I couldn't get them loaded without it. I'm in NJ so I have the 10 round magazines with plastic extension. They're stiff but I'm leaving them loaded at home to try to loosen them up a little.
So in 100 rounds I had about 8 stove pipes. No particular pattern, and I'm thinking I should give it a few hundred rounds before I worry about stuff like that. After a pretty big adjustment to the rear sight elevation it was shooting accurately (for me). I've heard some complain about the size of the safety button- I thought it was fine. Other good points are:
In my hand it feels a lot like a light, single stack 1911
It is pretty accurate
It is light but balanced- the slide doesn't dominate the frame- might make a nice carry piece
The trigger feels good and smooth- I didn't think it would while dry firing, but with ammo it's good
VERY low recoil. I'm used to my Sig 2022 which is top heavy and has a lot more recoil.
Has a reversible backstrap that is convex from the factory. Reversed it is flat. I tried changing it but returned it to convex because with the backstrap reversed the grip felt too small in my hand.
I have fired Glocks, XDs, M&Ps, etc and was concerned about the striker fire trigger, but I was pleasantly surprised. I may want to get some work done on the trigger, but I'm just going to let it go and get used to it first.
Stovepipes aside, all in all I am pleasantly surprised by how smooth and easily the gun fires, and how easy it is to keep on target in rapid fire.
For a $450 pistol new, I recommend it highly.
-
Thanks for the report.
Do you think the stove pipes might be from you? Did you clean and oil it well before shooting?
-

DUDE!!!
Ever since I saw a new Ruger revolver with that thick brown gook all over it, I would never shoot a new gun without cleaning and oiling unless the dealer assured me they had gone over it. I did NOT, however, take the magazines apart, but the stovepipe is in the ejection phase, so I'm not sure if that would have any affect.
I'll be cleaning it again in a little while before I head off to PA for a gig. I'll be looking more closely at everything this time.

Jaybeth,
No offense intended!
By YOU causing it I meant the way you shoot it. I have some guns that I can shoot forever with no problems but if I give it to SOME others they jam it. Same with other guns I have fired. Owner has no problem and I can't get through a mag. Odd but true.

I've heard it refereed to as "limp wristing" The way the particular shooter is holding the gun does not provide enough resistance for the recoil to properly cycle the action. Since the design is different maybe you need to change your grip a little.
-
You guys might be right, although I've never been accused of being "limp wristed" it could be something like that, so like I said before, I'm just going to shoot the snot out of it and see if things improve or I figure it out, because I LIKEY the gun!

;D It has to do with GRIP, not orientation ;D

;D It has to do with GRIP, not orientation ;D
Isn't it all in how you orient the grip? Conversely, your orientation influences how and what you grip, right?
Never mind.
-
I don't know what your opinion of the S&W key lock is but if you are looking at snubs the new S&W mod. 40 in the Classic line does not have the key lock (I AM TOLD) and looks great in color case hardening. Haven't seen one in person so I don't know about the key lock.

And to think how calm and rational Marshal is... Hey, I'm just sayin'.
Makes for an "interesting" life.
Mac.

Not to beat a dead horse, but wifey and I took the SR9 out last night and put a hundred rounds through it. Hazcat was right, it was the grip. A firm grip gets good results (more innuendo for Marshall'ette). NO stovepipes for me.
Now wifey got a chance to handle my piece and first round got a stovepipe. Once I showed told her how to adjust her grip my piece fired repeatedly and flawlessly.
I just love throwing gasoline on a fire.

Tom......you've got a mean streak about a mile wide. I mean, after all the problems Haz had and everything......you oughta' cut the guy a little slack. No need in adding insult to injury...Bill told me the same thing but hey, we oughta' keep some things to ourselves.

Prison ? If you can't laugh at them you REALLY want to shoot them. Worse yet, they might make YOU clean up the mess that .45LC leaves. ;D

Got an XDm Bi-tone for my b-day in May. Getting extra mags for it for Father's Day.
