Get to work at a little after 7 and 'meet' a guy at the back door - says he forgot his badge and can I badge him in. This is a fairly small company and I don't recognise him so I ask his name. He gets the 'deer in headlights' look and 'goes to his car to look for it'. Well my 'this-is-odd-o-meter' is pinging - so I says something to the 'security manager'. Got to spend an hour looking at everyone badge picture off the computer and this dude def didn't belong here.
I guess the 5-0 is heading over this afternoon and we get to chat and look at the security video at the door.
Why can't I carry in this retarded state? If it had broken bad I guess I could beat him with my laptop then ran like a sissy boy ...

Tuck the laptop like a football, give him a good stiff-arm, and squeal "run away...run away....run away" like a little girl.

I resemble that!
;D
actually this boat anchor of a laptop might be considered lethal in some states - and I'd really like one of the sweet new ones they're getting - maybe he'll come back tomorrow!

And the Police mug shot program can photo shop out the dent you will put in his fore head ;D

was thinking of aiming a little er LOWER ...

I guess since the laptop is heavy, if you could get a flat spin on it like a discus.......... ;)
Think Oddjob.

it was interesting
they got a partial plate number off the security cam and recommended we relocate the camera (doh!)
they had me look at some pictures of local know weirdo's
no crime was committed
the maintenance staff is going to have a guy sitting in a company truck near the entrance with a cell phone the next week or two
big shots are going to talk about a security officer again - we're kinda at that point - biggest issue is the company is family owned and doesn't want to hire it out - but the risk of a security officer on staff is huge i this retarded state - something I'd never thought about
-
Might be able to duck the liability issue by going through a temp agency. The deal is this. Find the guy you want, retired cop, military etc. Then send him to the agency telling them he's your guy. They hire ihm and send him to you. You pay the premium of whatever "temps-are-us" charges, but he's working for them if he shoots somebody. Just a thought.

possibility but the family that runs the business just doesn't do contractors - folks that clean the office are employees , maintenance people too.
this building in a security nightmare - way too many doors in and out - good thing is new people stick out

Sounds like changing this situation would go a long way to help. I would limit the ways into the building. Also making sure that any entrance is able to monitored somehow. One way locks are very inexpensive these days. This would allow you to keep the doors locked to unwanted access, but still allow fire egress.

I've seen it happen at work and at a gym I used to go to and the one I use now. The work incident played out simliar to yours, the gym imposters were watched like thieves and got away with some minor aches and pains... we(the paying patrons) got a good laugh at their expense.
So why can't I carry to work?

do you have 1 mill liquid and another 10 mil you can get to with in short notice?
if not, thats why you can't carry at work.
Like it or not, a ND in the work place or you actually having to use the gun in SD is going to end up costing your employer big bucks. Its really that simple.
Even something as small as a flesh wound will end up costing tens of thousands, if not much, much more.
Lets just say you have a ND and it injures some one near you. Ambulance ride, over night in the er and they spend a week off work.
Does not sound like much does it? think again.
The ride is going to cost atleast a grand, the over night in the hospital is going to be atleast 25k, add in a weeks pay, oh yeah, since they spent 24+ hours in the hospital OSHA has to come do a field audit, of which I have never seen or heard of them not find some type of violation, thats another 10k( if not alot more), workmens comp just went up and they have to find and train a replacment for you. Lets also not forget the ammount of time HR/book keeper/owner is going to have to put into dealing with all this stuff.
Thats atleast 100k right there and it was from a minor injury. I've seen small shops have to close for much less.
I won't even get into what things cost when lawyers get envoled. A good lawyer starts at $250/hr, better are 500+

Do they have metal detectors ? Do you have something that can be deeply concealed ,like an LCP ?
It's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

getting cuagh also makes you basicly unemployable.
Once a employer finds out you were terminated for violating weapons policy, your basicly done.
Let me be clear on this, I'm speaking as a employer. You are free to do what ever you like, just realize that there is a price to pay for your choices.

I understand the civil litigation aspect , but if there is an active shooter (insert recent incident of your choice at a mall, grocery store, post office, school, ect.) the LAST thing I'm going to worry about is the legal aftermath. Deadly force in a "Imenent danger or Grevious bodily harm or death" would be an easy defense civil or otherwise

yes but carry in IL is totally verboten - so in my estimation I'm more likely to get sideways of the law getting caught with a firearm than I'm am to get caught up in an active shooter thing (which didn't even come to mind the other day - gee thanks pal)
It does make the 'seven seconds to safety' argument sound a bit more feasible
-
Getting fired is one thing, going to jail is a different matter. Carry some thing else, like that heavy lap top. Is a knife an option ?

Its possible I carried illegally in a DC suburb when making night deposits. I was jumpier than a cat on cack because I just knew that that was when I'd get pulled over for some BS and the cop would bust me for the gun. Still, going to an ATM at ten at night with several K in cash made the risk worth it. I never (hypothetically) carried anywhere else as I figured the risk of jail was greater than the risk of being mugged. The BGs on the other hand didn't seem to care. >:(

Tom Gresham has said , and I paraphrase, that there is only one other person that should even know you carry, so that if you're hurt and unable to fight, they can assume the role.
Definitely an individual choice.
I remember the first machine shop I worked in while in trade school, it seemed everyone carried to work.

That's where a plactic knife comes in handy. ;)

there is a guy that makes a knife out of saphire( man made) that will even beat the metal detectors... I would not want to get cuaght with it in a court house...
-
In Stephen Hunter's latest book "Dead Zero" the vilian uses a plastic knife to cut the throat of one of the good guys. Having machined all kinds of plastics, metals and a few ceramics I have come to the conclusion than anything can cut you.

I guess one of the many good things about living in a rural area is they let us keep folding knives in our regular state superior court....Cell phones are a $50 fine, but a 3" folder is OK.
Federal court is a no-go, though. The fed guys even made me take a small key ring knife off my keys for federal jury duty a few years back.

a final update on this - the guy tried to get in Thursday evening and got pinched by the gendarmes
seems he's a troubled individual who kinda thinks he's somewhere between MacGyver and Magnum PI - he's tried to get into several medical and insurance places in the area
