Title: Fl. Open Carry, Well, Sort Of....
Post by: fightingquaker13 on January 25, 2011, 09:07:14 AM
Folks, the Florida legislature has come through again. Who needs cable when you have these guys? There is a bill which is gaining traction that would allow open carry in the state. It is generally being met by yawns, but the tourism and hospitality interests are (figuratively) up in arms about it. They are afraid that gun totin' Floridians will scare away the Yankess (to which I say hooray). Still, the leg has outdone itself here by EXEMPTING THE LEGISLATURE FROM THIS AND MAKING IT A GUN FREE ZONE! :o ::)
As you can imagine, the antis are having a field day with this. And honestly, who can blame them? Essentially their argument is "If its so safe, why can't I carry a gun into your place of business"? Pretty darn hard to refute. One more example of government saying whats good for me is not good for thee. Someone needs to slap these silly bastards. >:(

You keep bashing "Yankee's" but you are (again) a day late (more like a month ) and a dollar short.
NH, Me, and Vermont have always had unrestricted open carry.
Last summer the Dem dominated state Legislature made State offices "Gun Free Zones", When the American's retook control last month their first act was to over reverse that.  ;D

It was a joke dude. Its the antis big rationale. "Tourists from northern states with sane gun laws won't come down here". Personally, if you're bothered by the 2A, I'd just as soon you stayed home. That was all I meant.

I just get sick of being grouped with those azzholes in Ma and NY, we have to put up with enough of their crap up here.
That and hearing about "Fla.'s first in the nation shall issue CCW", I had permits in Me. and NH 5-10 years before it ever came up in Fl. and my Dad had a NH permit 10 years before that.

They are afraid that gun totin' Floridians will scare away the Yankess (to which I say hooray). Still, the leg has outdone itself here by

"....I wish I was in Dixie, Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
to live and die in Dixie.
Away, away, away down south in Dixie.
Away, away, away down south in Dixie....."

Anything south of Orlando is north of the Mason-Dixon to me....  ;D

As for the legislation, it's BS about the exemption but I'll take it for now. Does it do away with CCW permits for in-state carry?

That's why you should have let the CSA win.....And if we knew all trouble we would have to put up with 150 years later, we would have picked our own damn cotton!..... ;)

I rember seeing a cartoon many years back. I think it was the New Yorker, but I forget because it was long enough ago it passed muster without the PC police goining nuts. Anyway two guys in Pilgrim outfits are standing by a dock with a sign saying "Welcome to Jamestown". One is saying to the other "Relax Jonathon, its just a few slaves, how much trouble can it cause"?  :-\ ;D

Of course, it had to be written by a Northerner.  There are only two types of people who would have to say "I WISH I was in in Dixie":  Northerners and Southerners who have had to leave the South.  We're already here.  Why would we have to wish to be here?   ;D

Ditto, boot camp in Orlando and a year in Key West was enough for me.  One can only take so much debauchery!

Thank goodness at least the strippers shaved their legs and armpits, the locals didn't!  Filthy Hippies!

 ;) ;D :D

Actually, I think Key Waste is a pile of coral with a few roads and ten bars on every corner...Mallory Square was a hoot as was Sloppy Joes, the Green Parot and any number of the local "exotic" establishments.  There was a strip joint directly across the street from the main gate.  The poor Marines guarding the gate had to look at the people stream in and out of the place 24/7...

I'd plan a trip back someday.  I was part of a group of Squids that were "volunteered" by the Command to help an archeologist dig out Fort Zachery Taylor on the southwest end of the rock.  Pretty cool stuff, still got some sand embedded in my backside from that place.  My girl probably suffered more than me!

 ;D

I went there as an 18 year old kid..........in retrospect, I wouldn't change a thing... ;D

All I saw of Orlando (remember, this was 1975, not much there yet besides Disney World) was the Naval Training Station and not much else.  I traded my 24 hour liberty to a guy who's family had come down from No Dakota or something for graduation.  I got about 16 hours off the base, spent with a young Wave, a case of beer and a hotel room...

No worries there, FQ....(your water tastes like sh!t in central Fl, for the record!)......and I don't spend a pile of money either......I'm a half-assed cheap SOB and we take a lot of our food and beverages with us .   ;)

At least you have good carry laws.   ;)

The statutes on the books already allow open carry to and from the range, fishing, hunting, and camping trips. FL Statute 790.33 (3)(h).

Local outfit "Dixie" Gun Works, here in Pompano Beach, is trying to organize a fishing/open carry meetup this Feb.   8)

Our water in S. Fl, is good for showers, laundry, and sprinklers,,.....other than that, it's bottled....

As far as the Keys?

Well, Here's the Town Council...Pretty laid back...Where do you think Santa goes in the off season? ;)

That gal on the right was a young woman in 1975.....

Her beard is a little grayer.....

 ;D

the Conch Train.....lived there a year almost and never rode the train...I had a '63 Bel Air to motor around in for a while.  Other than that, my own two feet and some beach sandals worked!

Only time I went I stayed at a joint on Duval. Never had to start the car (which was a good thing given the amount of booze consumed). Its one of those rare places where all you need is a moped with some baskets and a pair of sneakers. Too touristy now, but I would have paid a lot to have been there in the '50s-early '80s. :-\

The year I left, late 1976, the Navy was moving out of the main island.  The air station was staying up on Boca Chica, it may still be there.  The locals were all lamenting the loss of revenue. There were two small bases on Key West, Truman and Trumbull Annex, that were going to be gone as well as the old Sub pit docks, the Sonar School, etc..

A lot of Naval history on that rock.  The City of Key West treated us pretty damn good, usually a round on the house from Sloppy Joes.  My memory fades but I still talk to guys and gals that I was stationed with there.  In fact, I got an email from a galpal today!

From Key West, I went directly to Iceland after a month home in MI.  Talk about a quick way to f..k up a good suntan!

Great place being born in Miami, and taking trips down with my Mom & Dad, the dog, my kid sister, and sometimes Aunt Edith,...kinda like National Lampoons Vacation at times but great memories.

After getting the hell out of Miami in the late 70's, the Keys kinda went weird in the 80's. The blow, the bags of "Florida Jewfish" that washed up on the beach, the scumbags, kinda crept in.

Than the 90's became more "culturally" diversified,....Rainbow Coalition established a foothold, even the wild chickens got freaked out.

So here we are, in the 21st century, what's old is kinda new, the blow and scumbags have been pushed back, the tourists and "alternative lifestyle" folks, retired 60's activists, and the next generation, along with the European tourists, kinda always make the Keys a "never a dull moment" place. The locals always do what they always do,.....go with the flow.....

All the famous bars are still there, albeit with new mgt./owners. but kept it in the old school tradition of the Keys.

As long as your buyin', your drinkin. Cops will run you off the beach at sunrise, but you can get a good nap leaned up on the bulkhead.  8)

Trust me, the Rainbow crew were there in force in the 70's as well.  The gay bars always had the best live music, they'd leave us alone.  Don't even recall any real conflict between the local poofs and the Military folks.  Different times, not everyone was a pissed off as they are today!

Mellow, laid back, slow motion living......just wish the local gals weren't so hairy!
