Title: Server Upgrade
Post by: Marshal Halloway on February 11, 2011, 12:44:46 AM

We are upgrading to a new server on Friday February 11, starting at 10:00 AM Eastern. The website will be unavailable during the migration. Down time is expected to be around 60 minutes. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Hmmmm - 10:35 Eastern, and the site (not sight) is still running. Everything go quickly or were there massive problems and the change over was delayed?

BTW - WTF Marshal, changing the server in the middle of the day? Like 1BS said, we'll have to actually, you know, work. You sysadmins are supposed to be creatures of the night and do this kind of change at 3AM!!!    ;D

The three great lies (revised).

#1 - The check is in the mail.
#2 - Of course I'll respect you in the morning.
#3 - The server upgrade will only take an hour.

When I worked in the profession and had a similar upgrade to do, and I figured it would take an hour, I told my boss it would take 2 hours, figuring that would suffice of Murphy wasn't on a coffee break during the upgrade.

My boss, having been in the field for some time also. would send out an Email telling the company the upgrade would take 4  hours.

Seldom was Murphy able to beat our double safety net.

Short story is: It's been a shitty day. Tech team failed to move to the new server which had some glitches I couldn't blame on manual errors. It was simply a faulty hardware. Murphy's Law kicked in big time on top of that and I told them to get back on the old server and that's where we are right now.

Will try again later when we have a better game plan.

Sorry.....

No apologies necessary, Marshal........ Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug.  ;)

Sometimes the only thing you can do on a really shitty day is simply tote more toilet paper.

No worries.  Given the level of work that is required just to keep it running I'm impressed with how well you do manage this herd of cats.  We all understand that things of this nature almost never go as planned.

Not that that will keep us from getting a few jabs in...    ;D

Let me tell you the story.....................  **you know how I love a good story** ;D
Last week Marshal made the major decision to buy and upgrade a bigger dedicated server. With the 3 websites running and getting bigger and bigger with more people using them every day, we started to experience slow download times and slow navigation in all the sites.. So he upgraded and the purchase was made.  :)..
Thursday and Thursday night he prepared for the change over.. They said it would take 2 hours. (uh-huh... famous lat words)  They contacted him Friday morning at 9 and said they were starting to shut everything down and the transfer would begin. Well~~ 6 hours later.. they said that they didn't realize how many millions of data needed to be processed...and it was taking longer than normal.  Finally they said it was complete.

But... it wasn't . Oh, it was on their end.. (they thought) but when Kjell checked, he found that although it was moved.. you couldn't post anything. * like.. what good is a forum if you can't yack and gab, right? *
So he sighed great big and said.. 'They can't do anything about this.. I'm the only one going to have to figure out the problem" . and he started on it..
Worked until late in the night ( early this morning) and still hadn't found the problem.
He finally gave a small  ahhhh-ha! ( not too much triumph in it yet however) and said.." I think I know what happened.. the sites are so large that the server company ..as everything was moving over.. timed out which started it over again.. and in the meantime added files and notations that weren't there.."
He did say with a sigh of relief.. "I'm so glad I did a full back up before they started.."
((That kinda made me panic when he said that..but of course I panic easily when computers are involved beca---- :-X ohh never mind.. back to my story..)

So he switched back to the old server so the sites would at least be running again for everyone, and is scanning and going over it all to see what files are supposed to be there and what ones aren't.

I said, "Can't they just delete and start over and move it all again.. this time watching to make sure it doesn't time out? " Shows how much I know about it which is a whole lot of Nada- Zip... cause he said with measured control and patience.." Teresa~~that wouldn't accomplish anything."  .
Sooooo`` I slunk back to my corner~ keeping my not so smart suggestions to myself.   :)

The techs can't help because he built these sites totally by himself with a piece of this and some of that and even some custom software that he built himself.. So they are totally baffled on how the sites are maintained and how they run. Sai they have never seen anything like it! .. They said its like an Einstein Maze of intricate webs that inner and outer link.. No one can duplicate it.. so that means.. no can work on it.... but the Creator of it.... which in this case is.. *You know who *  Michale Bane calls him "The Internet Computer Master of Duct Tape".. LOL

He has said many many times when he started building CasCity 15 years ago.. he knew nothing. So he sat down and started teaching himself and gathering up tons of bits and pieces of free software that was out there and put them together to try to make and duplicate what the big companies had.  But when you can't afford all the new fancy premade software, it was quite the challenge. But he rose to it and 15 years later has passed it many many times over.. and now is considered in most areas of the Industry as the Guru of the Online Marketing, Web and Internet.
( who would have ever thunk it!  ;D )

((((I won't tell you what I am known for))   ;) ;D ;D : )))

But back to the original story.. He has to go through all the files to check manually if they belong or don't, This will take somewhere in the vicinity of 2,457 years and 7 months. ... hahaha   ;D ;D..
No..not really but it will take a long time.. so until he gets it all figured out and done.. we will be running on the old server.. so if you experience slow downloads or your computer just sits there trying to load the site up.. Please know it most likely isn't your computer.. it is the site...and "HE" is working on it as fast as he can.

Hopefully.. before Marshal grows a floor length gray beard..  we will  be able to experience lightening fast applications on the sites..
Thanks for the patience.. ( and also for listening to me rattle and prattle  for the past forever minutes!  Like you had a choice..  LOL)

To paraphrase what M'ette said and translate into a language we understand here - "The old Norski wouldn't stop and ask directions, so now we're in Bum F**k Egypt."  And that is why he sent her back to her cage  ;)

I'm sorry, but this is my industry. What kind of lame-azz retard sysadmins do a server move and NOT figure out what and how much they're moving first? ? ? ? ? ? ? Sorry, but that is a level of incompetence I've seen only in my current client!!!!!
