HR 822: Concealed Carry Reciprocity Bill Introduced
Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) introduced HR 822 on Friday. It is:
To amend title 18, United States Code, to provide a national standard in accordance with which nonresidents of a State may carry concealed firearms in the State.
The full text of the bill is not yet available and he hasn't issued a press release describing the bill.
Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) - my Congressman - is the first co-sponsor of the bill. Whatever else I might say about Heath, he is good on the Second Amendment. You also may remember that he came out in the aftermath of the Tucson shootings saying he had a CCW permit and did carry. He also encouraged his staff to obtain a CCW permit.
I will call Shuler's office tomorrow to see if I can get a copy of the text of the bill as it may be a few days before the Government Printing Office has it available.

My rep, Alcee Hastings, is a waste of air. However, I could litterally throw a rock and have it land in Alan West's district. I think I might adopt West as "my" Congress critter. ;) I'm sure he's goining to be onboard with this, and I'll let him know about it.

The devil is in the details. Depending on the requirements it may be rejected in Pro liberty states like NH that have minimal requirements and already enjoy reciprocity with many other states.

Even if it sees the light of day in the House, it has to pass the Senate, then President Barack (Now is not the time to go after guns) Obama would have to sign it. After Obama's veto, enough votes would be necessary to override.
It's a nice thought, but a snowball has a better chance of surviving a Phoenix summer than a bill like this does of becoming law.

That's fine, let them defend/veto every anti Constitutional, every anti this or anti that, amendment including Obamacare. Bring it to their faces every month as we plow toward 2012.
The proportion of support for the legislation, vs the low informed voter, can continue removing the scumbags from office, and getting back from this Obamination.

Thank you for contacting me regarding the National Right-To-Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 822). I value your input and strive to keep you updated on the important issues facing us today.
On February 18, 2011, Representative Cliff Stearns introduced the National Right-To-Carry Reciprocity Act. This legislation would allow any person with a valid state-issued permit to carry a concealed firearm in any state that issues concealed firearm permits, or that does not prohibit the carrying of concealed firearms.
As you may know, I support the individual right to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I also believe that individual states should be allowed to decide what constitutes safe and responsible gun ownership so long as it does not violate that basic constitutional right.
Under the proposed House legislation, a national concealed carry reciprocity amendment would obligate states like Massachusetts to recognize the concealed carry permits of other states, even if the bearer of that permit does not meet the requirements established by Massachusetts to receive such a concealed carry permit. I believe that the people of Massachusetts are best positioned to decide what is best for Massachusetts. Therefore, if H.R. 822 or similar legislation comes before the Senate, I will vote no.

Thank you for your prompt reply.
However, based on those criteria, we shouldn't accept out of state driver licenses in the Commonwealth either! An untrained motor vehicle operator is far more dangerous than someone carrying a Constitutionally protected firearm don't you think? It's my understanding that motor vehicles kill far more people in this country annually than legally owned firearms.
The 10th Amendment relegates powers to the States that which is not covered by the Constitution. The right to keep and bear arms is clear as a bell as far as I'm concerned! Maybe you would consider rethinking your argument and at least consider some form of compromise.

I doubt King Harry would even let it get out of committee if it makes it to the Senate.
