Pima County the 51st state?
A political committee made up of attorneys, including the former chairman of the Pima County Democratic Party, has been formed to try to get Southern Arizona to secede from the rest of the state.
Start Our State, which is asking other like-minded counties to join the effort, hopes to put the question before Pima County voters in 2012.
The concept of a Southern Arizona state - Baja Arizona - has been around for ages as a way to differentiate the region from its more conservative brethren to the north. The notion of secession has been bandied about, but there was never a serious effort in that direction - until now.

And Pima County Republican Chairman Brian Miller joked that his position would make him the leader of the new state's GOP. "I'm all for a promotion," he quipped.
But Paul Eckerstrom, co-chair of Save Our State, said it's not a ploy and not merely a political statement. He said the state Legislature has gone too far to the right.
In particular, a round of legislative measures challenging federal supremacy "really does border on them saying they don't want to be part of the Union any longer," he said.
"Well, I want to be part of the United States," Eckerstrom said. At a minimum, he said, the drive will send a message that Pima County doesn't want to go along with the priorities being outlined in Phoenix.
"It's no longer a laughing matter to me," Eckerstrom said, adding that his kids' futures are at stake. "I'm tired of hoping and praying that rationality will come to Phoenix."
The group's treasurer, Libertarian and public defender David Euchner, comes from a different political mind-set.
Euchner said Republicans were swept into office nationwide on a promise of helping to fix the economic and spending problems. "Meanwhile, every bill we've heard about here is either anti-abortion laws or anti-Mexican laws. These are not laws that are geared toward solving the real problems that we have."
Organizers concede that there are daunting hurdles. They must first get on the ballot, then get approval from the Legislature or from state voters to allow the exodus. A new state constitution would have to be approved, plus they'd have to get the OK from Congress and the president.

Could we sell it to Mexico? Make it the only "sanctuary" in the US, Mexico? Look, I sympathize with the Libertarian. Voters wanted less spanding and less debt. What did they get, a bunch of social conservative stuff no asked for. Its the same thing the Dems did in '09. The mandate was fixing FP, letting people buy into the Federal health plan and (once again) regulating banks and insurance. The Dems saw it as a mandate for the looney left and it blew up in their face. The GOP is doing the same damn thing. People get tired of it. But opening the border is not an option.

Mexico probably doesn't want it.
Then again, we could sell it - they can't make the payments, repo and flip it...
These goofs wish there were as many libtards north of them as there are down there.....ain't gonna happen.

You continue to your vain attempts to conceal your liberal ideology behind the veneer of a libertarian. Here again you totally miss what actual thinking people want. Get rid of the illegal aliens. The continuing court and legislative actions against "Gay marriage" and Obummercare, indicate that people DO want these socially conservative policies.
Any one but a PhD would realize that if they didn't, they would not have voted for the people promoting them.
You compound my low opinion of you by singing the socialist mantra of banks are evil, all we need is a little more regulation.
Dumbass, You still haven't figured out that govt meddling by lying scumbags like Barney "the butt blaster" Frank is what caused this whole mess in the first place.
-
Two points Tom. You will note that I did reject calls for lossening the boarder. Try reading the post.
Second, the cause of the great Depprression, the S@L Crisis and our current mess boils down to undercapitalized banks and insurance companies. They made tons of loans that left them unable to eat the losses when things went south since they didn't have adquate capital on hand. It was worse in the currrent crisis because they sold "mortgage securities" as A rated since they were "insured" by companies like AIG that didn't have capital on hand to pay claiments. Banks that weren't really banks insured by insurance companies that weren't really insurance companies. It was fraud on the investor. That is not capitalism, its a ponzi scheme. ::) What the hell is leftist about wanting full disclosure to investors? Capitalism cannot function in an environment that lacks disclosure and protection against fraud. You're in the wrong here Tom.

No Sh!t! Which is why people like Chris Dodd, and Barney Frank need to be brought up on the same charges as Bernie Madoff. These are the people who propped up Fannie/Freddie and created the rules that forced banks to make loans to people that had no hope of ever repaying. No credit report, no proof of a job, no source of income listed. Do you really believe that banks and insurance companies made these loans because they thought it was smart?
I know you are going to come back at me with the fact that they were selling all these toxic loans to Fannie and Freddie, but what the hell would you do? Government regulation forces you to make loans to people that you know cannot repay, I would dump that sucker as soon as I could too.
It was government meddling at an attempt at social engineering that caused the housing bubble. Not greedy banks. And don't try to tell me that it was Bush's fault because of his speech saying that he felt every American deserved a home. He tried several times to stop congress from this ponzy scheme, however the DEMOCRAT controlled congress shut him down.

At the time he was making these statements he was living with the head of one of these organizations.
The reason the loans were "toxic" was because the dem congress ( IE the ones charged with regulation of that industry, lead by Maxine Waters and Barney Frank [see above] ) ruled that verifying the income of borrowers, (seeing if they would get their money back ) was a racist ploy.
You still do not grasp the basic reality, Government is not the answer, it is the problem.

If we could get a conservative Californian state to balance the other one, that may not be such a bad thing. But, do we really want another liberal state "Baja AZ" that gets to send Senators and Congressmen to DC?
-
We ain't all libtards and demonrats down here.
I've never heard of a N/S division of Az mentioned before. I believe the lefties would be surprised if such a thing went through. ;D
I grew up in SoCal and heard about dividing N/S Ca. way back in grade school. 8)
Btw, the motivational poster thread needs to be revived.

This ranks right up there with the "New Mazatlan" they always keep bitching about, that they think they have some kind of claim to. Haven't any of them heard of the Gadsden Purchase? If you want to keep your land, then don't SELL it! Bill T.
