I like how Steve Martin put when he said, "Some people have a way with words. Some people ... no have way." We're a generation of have nots.

Outstanding
I am making the oldest watch it when she gets home.

Thanks Haz,
It is simply amazing how inarticulate the American populous has become. I find myself constantly dumbing down my speech patterns to an audience that may need a thesaurus to understand me. I have a high school education though I did attend college classes for a time. It is nothing out of the ordinary, nothing too complex, nothing that requires matriculation at a higher level!
It's the English language for goodness sake.
I also type the way I speak..... ;D ;D
I kin get real stupider ifn' ya wanna get thar too...

When speaking, I really love to use antiquated and sometimes arcane words......it catches most folks off guard, but maybe it makes a few think from time to time. ;D

I really enjoy making up a word or two that sound genuine but aren't. I call it the Norm Crosby trick!
It's really a gas when one of my colleagues uses my "word" in a sentence during a presentation or something. I sit in the back and snicker under my breath at the idiot....keep in mind, I work, for the most part, with folks with at least four years of higher education. Unfortunately, engineers are only required three credit hours in English or composition...
;D ;D ;D

I love Norm. He and others started me on my love of English and having fun with it.
YOU (and I) are OLD as we remember who Norm was!

I used the word "serendipitous" in a sentence today while working and I got some looks from people in the gun shop.

I use fancy language in a niggardly fashion. ;D

Only a man wearing Scrabble on his shirt so clearly command us to, popular or not, say it with authority and like we mean it.
Good one!

True, though I would hardly take you for a man with very little to say!

I was challenged to a scrabble game a few weeks ago against my wife and her sister. I gave them the choice to pick any dictionary in the house for reference and rather than use the little, bitty, basic, 100 page one they normally use, Deb went and got the twenty pound, 2000 page gem my father in law had in the closet.
It was bloodbath...I annihilated them...

Ahh..Norm...my favorite quote of his...on death.
When I go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my Grandfather,
not screaming in terror like the other three people in his car.

I have long known that I have a great deal of respect for you, Peg. This post confirms I was right.

My Mother, moved to this country from Sweden in the early 50's. Learned English, and how to speak it properly. This carried over to my Sister and I. My Father, also spoke like an English professor, and slang and improper annunciation was not tolerated, and was corrected.
Having an expanded vocabulary, and speaking well, has been on a downhill slide for decades. Just like "clips" and "mags",...yes, we know what you mean, but it is "technically" not correct.
I am grateful, that those corrections, "rules" of grammar, and speaking properly, were part of my childhood. While speaking to an owner or Capt., Engineer, etc,.. of a large yacht, it is best not to speak like an idiot, and has served me well.
Although living in rural areas of NC, were always fun. ::)
See,,,, ya'll jus ain't got it strate yit...... When and if'n you do, go on and let us hold of some uh dat.... I Ain't need no damn learnin' any how.. Dis is Merica..

It's a machine shop, every one speaks reasonable English, and even the guy from the Phillipines is literate enough to know that Niggardly and nigger are totally unrelated.
You have to go to Washington to find someone that f*cking stupid.
