Been listening to Japanese news radio (NHK - English) and to no great surprise they've been reporting the conditions at the reactors as FARRRR worse than what we here on CNN, Fox news, CBS news and the like in this country.
Example: They report over 10,000 confirmed dead, over 17,000 missing from three different cities. Radiation levels outside the reactors at over 10,000 times higher than normal (matching that of Chernobyl. Not the lower 2,300 that we've been hearing happened at Three Mile).
I usually listen to European radio as well. And commonly find the same thing. Reports of news outside this country are far different than what we here on our news. The oil leaks in the gulf, the US, and world projected economy, projected job loss here and around the world.
A LOT of our news is sugar coated... Cause they think we're to "fragile" to hear reality? Or just to keep us to lazy and dumb to care. :-\
IF (BIG "IF") we ever hear the news the rest of the world gets its usually weeks, or days after the rest of the world. The Japan reactor news doing better than most for sure seems to be running about 2-3 days behind.

That was Sunday, March 13 — two days after the earthquake and tsunami had hit the coast and one day after the first explosion from the nuclear plant.
Thus began three days of mostly sleepless nights for Powell as he and others worked to contain contamination to the $4.5 billion nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and calm the nerves of its crew of about 4,500.
Powell's first examination showed a level of radiation on the nose of a helicopter 50 times higher than the ship's standard. Further checks showed that helicopter crew members themselves were coming in contaminated.

Heard on CNN in reference to traces of radiation in the air for Hawaii, Oregon, California and Washington State. I am wondering how this will affect the crops that will eventually get distributed throughout the United States, ie. pineapples, apples, vegetables.

and the water, and especially Milk. Bovine are very sensitive to radiation. It comes down to root vegetables, and canned good.
But we've been assured, all is well,....nothing to see,....move along.....

While I'm no expert, I'm personally not going to worry about radiation from Japan. I've soaked up radiation in higher levels in one minute or hour or day than the trace amounts that are being detected.
Now, buying produce from Japan or Kobe beef is another matter! Produce from Japan isn't available in the Northeast and Kobe beef, though I'd love some, I won't pay the price for it...
I'd be more worried about the crap you're eating in the sushi or BAIT as I call it!
