Title: Countdown: BOHICA FAR-50 MkII .50 BMG on its way
Post by: kilopaparomeo on March 09, 2008, 07:51:21 PM
Well, after ordering in September 07, paying in January 08 (after requesting to get a MkII rather than a MkI), my "number" finally came up.  My BOHICA FAR-50 MkII .50 BMG (also known as "flipping the bird at .gov before the elections") is soon to be a reality.  www.bohicaarms.com (http://www.bohicaarms.com)

Here's a review of the MkI model (MkII's have quite a few design upgrades like a better brake, a lot more steel parts, etc) http://www.longrangesupply.com/images/bohica/review.htm (http://www.longrangesupply.com/images/bohica/review.htm)

Got an email from Chris Rosequist, the owner, on Saturday that my upper is on its way.

Here's some "teaser" pics of how mine will be set up, however, I'll be using a standard A2 stock.

I'll mount my 30" barrelled upper on an A2 lower...decided to use the A2 stock ranter than my Magpul PRS so I can fill the stock cavity with lead...that will add almost 4 more pounds to the weight of the rifle to help reduce perceived recoil.  I have a Burris TACII 3-9x scope to start with...will go with higher magnification and more MOA of adjustment when I find someplace with longer ranges to stretch the rifles legs.  Burris Tactical 6-screw high rings.  I'm using the standard fire control parts with a Wolff heavy hammer spring to ensure good primer ignition.  100 rounds of M33 ball await.

With any luck, I'll have everything put together by March 14th but I have a Boy Scout winter backpacking trip planned for the coming weekend...no joy on shooting it until the following week.

In my opinion, shooting a .50 RIFLE is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Enjoy, and tell us all about it.
Mac.

I'm waiting with joyful, childish anticipation for my Barrettt Model 99:

Somewhere out there, it's being built...somewhere around here, I'm saving up money!

PS: Look for more .50 BMG coverage on SHOOTING GALLERY and DOWN RANGE, including long-range marksmanship, handloading the .50, all sorts of neato stuff!

KPR  Thanks for the link, a .50 conversion for 995.00, base price, with a built in bipod. Way too cool!! Give us a report as soon as you can. I do worry about the reciever  pins taking the recoil. Smile real big and have fun. Look forward to your report.

I do worry about the reciever  pins taking the recoil.

Yeah, I thought of that.  The designer claims that the straightline design of the upper/lower means that the recoil forces come straight back to the buffer tube/stock versus being being taken up by the receiver pins.  He says he has a lower with several hundred rounds through it and the holes have elongated around 0.002".

That said, I was going to use it as a upper shared on one of my existing lowers...but, instead I fed the evil gun industry and bought another lower.

For a guy who, 5 years ago, said he would never own an AR...I now own 5.  A 5.56 DCM A2, an M4-gery, a 9mm carbine, a 6.5 Grendel DMR and now a .50 BMG.

Anzio Ironworks in St. Pete also builds a superb .50:

http://www.anzioironworks.com/

You've seen Anzio on SHOOTING GALLERY.

You know, what got me off top-dead-center on getting a .50 BMG — always mean to; never follow through — was flipping through the revised version of
BOSTON'S GUN BIBLE (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FBostons-Gun-Bible-Boston-Party%2Fdp%2F1888766069%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1205257203%26sr%3D8-1&tag=downrangetv-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325)

I worked with the author a few years back, and while we certainly don't agree on everything, he and I are pretty much in the same book if not on the same page. I came across this in the .50 BMG chapter:

Quote
.50BMGs are the 20mm Solothurns of today."

A .50 owner told me that at a gun show, and hte analogy really hit home. Until the GCA68, there was no restriction on the private, unlicensed ownership of cannons and mortars! Such were affordable and could be shipped right to your door through mail order. The 14.5mm Soviet PTRS anti=tank rifle could be had for just $99.95 and through a 994-grain bullet at 3200 fps, for 22,607 fpe — about twice that of the .50BMG. Gee.

When you read UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES, did you also groan when you learned of pre-GCA68 $189.50 Swiss 20mm Solothurns and $99.95 Finish Lahtis? How about 20mm ammo for 75-99 cents a round?
[...]
Having a .50BMG today is like having a 20mm Solothurn back in the 1960s. No special license is currently required, and if you can find a private sale gun (rare, though not unheard of) the government will never know you own one...
[...]
Moral: buy now or cry later.

That quote struck me hard because a few months ago I was in St. Louis hanging around with my pal John Ross, author of UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES, pondering a Solothurn 20mm...of course, I had to tell John my story, about how in 1967 I had all the money saved up for a mail-order Boys Mk-1 British anti-tank rifle, about $150 bucks if I remember correctly, and how my father had talked me into getting a Lafayette 6-meter ham radio rig instead. The Lafayette was AM only and was so sloppy it practically blacked out television reception in my whole neighborhood.

I think .50s will be on the endangered species list in 2009, especially if the election runs 100% against us. My biggest fear is that we will throw .50s to the wolves to save us from another more general AWB. That's why I'm strongly ramping up .50 BMG coverage on both SHOOTING GALLERY and DRTV...the more visible the big blasters are, the harder they'll be to step on!

Well, if you come to St Pete to do a show on Anzio or the guys in Safety Harbor let me know.  I know a little dive that makes some great hamburgers.

Yup, that's why I call this purchase "Flipping' the bird at .gov"  (Also known as FTBAdotG = trademark pending on that one)

It's also why I ordered an **upper** that can be on an AR lower or not...the upper doesn't have any 4473 attached to it...as far as anyone is concerned "Why yes, Agent Schmuckatelly, that AR lower is for my hunting/varmit rig.  Jim Zumbo himself recommended it to me".
