While I'm a 1911 fan and I do have a couple XD's If I were to design my dream pistol this is what I want:
1. Black Stainless steel frame. I prefer the metal frames, I don't really trust polly guns in -40 F weather.
2. I would like a trough sight, with drilled holes if I decided to put on night sightes or adjustable sights set up for 15 yrds. getting older much farther out I'm not going to get a good shot out to 25 yrds.
3. An installed laser on the guide rod, like Lasermax.
4. Accessory rail. Being a bachelor I don't have to worry about drawing on a family member.
5. The take down lever like the XD has. This feature makes it easy to tear down, clean and slap back together really quick.
6. Either the striker system that Glock or Sprinfield has or the 1911 Single action. There are days the hammer is a pain and times it doesn't bug me.
7. Bigger trigger guard so I can get a winter glove in, with the finger grove on the front, like the XD.
8. Threaded barrells just because.
9. conversion between calibers is just a barrell and magazine switch. It may mean a bigger barrel for a 9MM in a .45. While this may be a pipe dream, it's my dream.
10. No extended beaver tail.
11. big enough slide so if you put magnants on your flashlight you can stick it to the slide in a hurry so you can go two handed without stumbling with any advanced flashlight tactics where you have to stand on your head to hit anything.
12. I prefer heavier pistols and I like the 5" models so no need to lighten up the pistol.
13. I want all the engraving, always wanted a pistol with it so, this is my dream pistol.
14. Ivory grips.
15. amberdexterous safety and amberdexterous over sized mag release
16. backstrap safty, I can take or leave the Glock trigger safety.
I have an idea for a holster to based on a Safari land level 3 holster and, but a little different. It would only work for a belt or hip holster.

My dream pistol would be a Freedom Arms in .44 Special.

While I dream of individual weapon systems from Thompsons to a Barretts, the point of my post was the features I want for a pistol as far as the things I like about each pistol.

Custom built 1911 from Novaks in Parkersburg, WV. I live 5 minutes from Wayne Novak and his shop and I have been there many times.

Well, I'm kinda hopen' to pick up my Custom Bruce Gray after Mr. Bain calls next month...... :D

I have such a list of wants, I wouldn't know where to start.
For a CC gun, and talking realistically, I am thoroughly enamored with the 1911 platform, and am honestly torn between the .40 and the .45 , so picking one round over the other would be difficult.
I don't want one too tight, but not worn out GI sloppy either. Maybe a little tighter than my Springfield Loaded.
I want sights I can see, and see through. I find that many sights allow for too little light around the front post. I would like just a little more.
Not a fan of striker fired guns, so I think I would opt out of that one.
Not opposed to poly's, but grew up with metal, so for now I will just stick with that. Perhaps one day I will spend a little on a poly and will give it an honest, unbiased go, till then I will just stay with my heavy stuff.
I haven't jumped on the accessory rail bandwagon yet, but since I am dreaming, lets just go ahead and throw one on there.
Not crazy about lasers, but since they can be switched on and off, why not (so long as someone else is buying the batteries).
Done up in a bead blasted stainless, and I think I would be happy.
Now for the things I really want, I would need to become financially independant.

My dream gun keeps changing.I am happy with the ones I got now,all quality shooters.

Forget dreaming.. I am just trying to get down to a single pistol, and then get really really good at it. Although I am finding that is impossible for both one pistol or getting good at it. :)

Your are correct, but this is my idea of the perfect pistol.
-
The perfect pistol already exists -- though it is now discontinued...
Nothing better than the HK P7 series! ;D

A belt fed 686 Smith and Wesson with a 6 inch barrel.

I have a dream. How about a 1911 as dependable as a Glock. If you think you got one go through my testing process. I have a G35 w/ 11k + round count without a jam. the only time i clean it is when my shooting buddies make fun of it or my better half complains of the range shirts being stained. If that is impossible than make a Glock as easy/fast to shoot as the 1911's .
And while i am at it..... let me add the double-strike abbility of the SIGs for the added ease of dry-firing. Impossible u say , i know . I KNOW ! But that is also the way i feel about owning a reliable 1911carry in MA. S&W heavy full size DK has come real close(over 5k B4 an jam) . But the Sc 4" models fall way short.
???just saying people say the XD is close but i will never kno in this state :'(

I am really happy with my Kimber Ultra CDP and of all the handguns I saw at the NRA cconvention in St Louis I am still hapopy with it so I guess I have MY dream gun.
-
Ok I guess I goofed with the original post. My thought was because Michael has the ability to talk to all the gunmakers, we would have a chance to tell them what we really want, a kind of design your own pistol.
