I guess, as some would say, it's the shooter more than the gun. This old boy seems to be 'one with his gun'.... :D

If you browse YouTube looking for Cowboy Action clips, you'll see that CAS shooters have really perfected running these "old guns" pretty darn fast. After shooting CAS for 5 years, I would never feel undergunned with a lever gun or double/pump shotgun. Even us mere mortals (e.g., not Grim Reaper, Lead Dispenser, etc) can put out quite a bit of lead with these.
I know I've told this story before, but my old club used to sponsor a "Cops vs. Cowboys" charity shoot. Cops got to bring their duty guns...semi auto pistols, pistol caliber rifles (several 9mm ARs, UMPs, MP5s on semi) and semi-auto/modern pump shotguns...against our single action revolvers, lever guns and double guns/Win97 pumps. The only restriction is we downloaded their guns to match our capacities.
Guess who won regularly? If you say the cops, you would be wrong. Never saw such a bunch of bad gun handling as when the cops shot.

For those who shoot SASS, why do they have to single load? It seems kind of silly to have to toss ammo into an ejection port in competition. Bill T.

My guess is that you get a score after loading each round and the movement is about as quick as going for another round to shove into the magazine..might be faster...so you are done after the last round is loaded and the trigger pulled. Where with loading the mag, you then have to make all the remaining shots.

in SASS you can only load 2 rounds max in any shotgun unless the stage directions say to stoke the gun, it is faster to single load the97 than to load one in the chamber close the action and load the second round in the tube.

Yup, this is done to keep it even between pumps and double barrels.
