The new head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is pushing for screenings of all gun purchases.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said the current law, which allows private firearm sales without background checks, is "outrageous." The Florida Democrat is sponsoring a soon-to-be-released proposal extending the screening requirements to all gun purchases, commercial or private.
"It is outrageous that gun buyers evade the background-check system every day, even in broad daylight," Wasserman Schultz said Monday at a gun-reform rally in Miami sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
--snip --
Wasserman Schultz will take the reins of the DNC later this month. Tim Kaine, the former governor of Virginia, stepped down to campaign for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.). Donna Brazile is serving as the interim chairwoman of the committee.
Under current law, licensed gun dealers are required to conduct background checks to ensure that prospective buyers are legally eligible to own firearms. Felons, illegal immigrants and the severely mentally ill, for instance, are barred from owning guns. Licensed dealers must perform these screenings in all venues — including gun shows — but unlicensed dealers are under no obligation to follow them anywhere. Critics of the policy discrepancy call it the "gun-show loophole."
The coming House legislation will require all gun sellers to perform background checks on potential buyers — a change forcing private sellers to finalize their sales at licensed dealers or law enforcement offices, which have access to the federal database used to weed out illegal buyers.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced similar legislation in the upper chamber earlier in the year.

More crap that, if passed, will only serve to tie the hands of legal gun owners and law-abiding citizens. The criminals will continue to work below the laws.
These asshats just don't get it.

And I want to screen all the contributions made to the DNC and MAIG.
I have more legal standing than they do, but will I get what I want?

Ah there's a technical rub here. Actually "Sales" aren't regulated as such. The key word is "TRANSFERS".
I can buy and sell guns all I want with no oversight (think GunBroker, think NYSE), but the minute I go to take poccession, to effect the "TRANSFER" that's when the federal regulations kick in.
Let that soak in for a minute. TRANSFERS
Unless specifically exempted, anytime a gun changes hand would be a "transfer".

Gosh, I wonder how two gang bangers making a gun deal in a dark alley are gonna be able to conduct the background checks?
I guess they will just have to find a way... maybe an IPhone App?

This is not news or even remotely new. This is just a more honest name for "Gun show loophole".
And they do not want to "screen" all gun sales, their objective is to ban them completely.
All you have to do is read the democratic party platform. Screening is just what they think you are dumb enough to let happen now, like Paul Helmke said, "a good first step", BUT ONLY A FIRST STEP. Yet some of you ( TAB, are you reading this ) are to stupid to get it, you "vote for the person, not the party", like YOUR dem is different.
AMERICA, WAKE THE F*CK UP !

Tom, while you are right in general, there are some specific situations where you are incorrect.
here in Ohio, we struggled to get CCW passed and then to have it Veto'ed by the Republican Gov. Taft. It was finally passed but only after he managed to get it filled with enough crap that he thought it would be a deal breaker.
We then elected Gov. Strickland (D) and he was a true supporter of the 2A. He championed cleaning up of the CCW law that was passed and got it done with many of the onerous provisions removed. Castle Doctrine was passed with his total support and the support of several Democrat Senators and Representatives who were endorsed by the Buckeye Firearms Association (http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/) and elected.
You are correct, however, Gov. Strickland did support much of the rest of the Democrat platform, including ObamaCare.
Strickland lost to a Republican in the last election and legislation to further clean up our CCW laws have been stalled due to the failure of the Republicans to live up to campaign promises to push the changes through. I do feel that the lack of strong support and the lack of active pressure on the part of the governor has lead to this lack of commitment on the part of the Republicans.
The Republicans here in Ohio just don't seem to "Get It" when it comes to the 2A, while many Democrats are strong supporters.
I guess the case here is choice between strong 2A Democrats or weak 2A RINOs.
My choice is to secure our most important rights first, 2A rights, then work to undo the ills caused by the rest of the Democrat platform.
Strickland had my vote both times, but he lost the second time.

Vote for a Rep. and you MIGHT get a RINO azzhole, Vote for any Dem and you deserve results.

True. I voted for Strickland and I got improved CCW laws and Castle Doctrine and other 2A laws passed.

How are your taxes ? Are your Public employee unions still living fat off your taxes ? Or did they sacrafice their raises to help the states budget deficit ? just for a couple of items. Them dems hate America and if you vote for them you are either planning on leaching off the system or you like like paying so others can live like parasites.
Or you are a blind fool. Your pay off will come in the long run.

In 2009, Ohio's state and local tax rate was 9.7% of income while the national average was 9.8%, average but not good in my book. Republicans has been in control much of the past decade, particularly the Governor.
The Senate just recently passed a bill that will prohibit public unions similar to the bill in Wisconsin. We will see where that goes.
I'd suspect a Dem. Governor would veto the bill. We will see what our Republican will do.
-
9.7% !!!! WTF? I've always wondered why people tolerate getting hammered with federal taxes, and then getting whacked again with state taxes that are as much if not more than the feds. I'm telling you, MOVE TO WYO!!!!
State income tax: 0.0%
State sales tax: 4%
State budget: Approx 1.12 BILLION SURPLUS
As of July 1st 2011, concealed carry w/o license
Suing the fed, and amending our state constitution so that we can tell the fed to F off when Obamacare starts up.
Housing prices are pretty stable right now, but our market never crashed.
Help wanted EVERYWHERE!
And you should have seen what we did to PETA when they came to protest the Platte River Anglers, because "trout feel pain"
I laughed my ass off when they showed up opening weekend of elk season. Everywhere you looked all you saw was guys in camo and blaze orange driving pick ups with a rifle and a fishing pole in the window rack. The protest, which was supposed to go on for 8 hours lasted 45 min.

What is this "State tax" you speak of ?
-
Well, I gotta admit, I've always had an eye on NH. It is the most Libertarian state of which I've been aware.
Seems I should also be checking out Wyoming.
Of course I don't get to pay income tax any longer and if I buy online, sales tax becomes insignificant. I still pay vehicle registration though.

I have to admit, we do have local property taxes that can get pretty ridiculous if you live in an area that has been taken over by Massholes who moved here to escape the ridiculous taxes in Mass.
