Title: Now hiring...
Post by: TAB on April 26, 2011, 05:34:15 PM
I had almost forgoton how much fun it is trying to hiring employees.

200+ apps in since  sunday, only 3 made it to a interview... all 3 crashed and burned.

I mean wtf, how hard is it to find a certified electrician, that is dependable, non smoking, presentable to corpate clients and wants to make ~$3 a hour over union scale.   For easy work too, just hooking up and removing meters and using a laser alinement tool.

I could teach anyone here the job in 2 weeks, if they didn't know a damn thing.

I don't get it.

Seems no one has any pride in themselves any more.......which has caused society to default to the lowest common denominator. We get sloppy work from sloppy contractors...all the while expecting top dollar.

I can do it without the training but the commute will be a bitch....can't afford the paycut though!

My advice? Go to your local high school tech branch/community college. It seems like it would be easier to hire and train a young guy who wants an in than to train bad habits out of someone older. Alternativley, try to hire ex-military. Though why the non-smoker thing? As long as they aren't puffing in the client's house, who cares?

So what does a lic  charter boat captian make these days?

$38/ hour for a sparky is good pay, infact its better then prevailing wage if you pay every thing you are supose too( no one ever does lol)

FQ, this multi million comm'l contract stuff.  Its more of a CYA move then anything else.   As far as the non smoker, its simple.  do you want some one coming to your work stinking of smoke?  or having them smoke in your car?  I won't even get started on how much money you lose when they are on a smoke break/ jones for a smoke.  The non smoking thing has always been a policy of mine.

You'd have to ask a charter boat captain!  I have no idea....38 bucks is a start in the right direction but not good enough to make a change....health benefits, 401K, vacation?

CT has a lower unemployment rate and the people my employer has been hiring don't live up to their resumes...most don't last a month lately!

$38/hour is well above the state and national average, infact its almost double.  Its right at about $80k a year.

Bennies are out of the question at that hourly rate, lose 10-15 a hour and we would talk about it.

Its alot more then you would make as 1 guy, a electrical contractors lic and a truck. ( unless your pay zero tax and breaking a bunch of other laws)

Lighten up Francis.

My MIL has a nose like a bloodhound and HATES the smell of smoke (and after shave). I accommodate her by not smoking before family events. It's just common courtesy.
If I didn't want a client to smell smoke, that's easy...and I smoke cigars!

I make that much now (nearly) and I'm not licensed for anything.  I also receive benefits equal to another 15-18K.  Our state household income average in CT is about 70K annually.  I still struggle making that kind of money...

I don't use electricians here.  I do the work myself and have it inspected if it's required by my town.  The reason for that is they charge about 150 bucks just to come to the house and about 75 or more an hour to do minor electrical work.  No sense paying someone for something I can easily do myself.

I realize you're dealing with a commercial business but you will get what you pay for even when trying to hire someone.  If you go too cheap, all you're going to manage to hire are the guys no one wanted anyway!

you don't make any money, unless you charge those rates.  I know all too well.

We are paying above union scale, which is by far the upper end of things.  18-25/hour is the norm of non union.  union is $35 and change.

I know what the deal is, every one that would have fit this job app to a T have left the area/state.

Just about all the subs I used in the past are either gone or retired.  The market dried up here really bad last year.

I'm glad I got out when I did.
