After 2 years of trying to find a training class that lines up with my schedule (heavy international business travel and 3 kids in lots of sports and activities tend to fill up nearly every weeknight and weekends), I finally found a class I can take.
I just found out there is a MAG-20R class about 3 hours from me on June 25-26. unfortunately I learned that Mas Ayoob isn't teaching it...very sad because I was excited to learn direct from him.
Opinions? Do I pay the money for a "name brand school" but only get one of his understudy instructors or do I pay much lower price for a course from a lesser known trainer (like Steve Fisher at MDFI...still a decent name)?

I'd wait for another one, but thats just me...I'd like to meet Mr. Ayoob.
If the price for the other course is *much* lower I'd think about going that direction.

Do you need the training? Does it matter if the training is sufficient for your needs? Will NOT meeting Ayoob really change what you're learning?
I had the Pincus at my home range, two miles from my house last year and took a pass. Middle of the week, 1500 rounds of ammo and an additional 600 plus for the three day course was not something I was willing to spend on training I don't really know that I need.
The cost may not be an issue for you but for the real people on the planet, it matters.

Take it now. Better yet, take MAG-20R and MDFI classes. I had not heard of MDFI, but if Pat Rogers says it is good, believe it.
My wife and I attended MAG-20 back when it was Judicious Use of Lethal Force (or something like that), the classroom portion of LFI-1. Mas is a superb instructor. Some day I hope to take MAG-40 and more training from MAG, and it sure would be great to have Mas doing the teaching.
However, if you really could find no training in 2 years that your schedule permits you to take, you might want to ask yourself why you want training. Do you want to get your copy of In the Gravest Extreme inscribed so everyone knows you are a close personal friend of Mas, or do you want training to help you protect your family? Cause Mas ain't going to be there if some dirtbag decides that you, your wife, and 3 kids are food some night while leaving the soccer field parking lot. It will be up to you, your wife, and oh yeah, YOU.
If you really repsect Mas, try respecting his choice of certified instructors.
As I said, I would like to take more classes with Mas. In the meantime I have taken a class with Steve McDaniel at Alaska Tactical and am signed up for a Louis Awerbuck shotgun class this summer. Long term I hope to take classes at Firearms Academy of Seattle (a MAG training partner), ICE Training, Thunder Ranch, Gunsite, Shootrite, PSA, Martial Blade Concepts, etc., etc. Good training now (from anyone) beats no training until it's too late.

Can't argue that.

My off the cuff reaction was going to be - Wait for a MAS taught class.

How can I argue against that?
I can't - he's right I'm not.
If the class has what your looking for. Take it.
