Rob and Tony are good friends. I've met Tony a few times and have great respect for what he does.

The concept of the spear, or "dive," as it's sometimes called, has existed in the traditional martial arts for a long time. The most distinct expression of it I've seen is in Indonesian pencak silat, especially Serak and its derivative systems. Tony's concept of accepting and building upon instinctive reactions is spon on and something that Rob and I also emphasize in our teaching. It's good stuff.

Stay safe,

Mike

I had noticed that ;)

instinctive reaction  is all you have to rely on under stress   and the more you can train it to your advantage is better.

Honestly, it as exposure to Tony's SPEAR Concepts that revitalized my interest in unarmed defensive training a little over a decade ago.  After too many frustrations and disappoints with traditional martial arts police academy "defensive tactics" programs, I just kinda rolled my eyes and was down to gross motor skills and strength/stamina as the keys to prevailing in a hand-to-hand fight. I still think that is fundamentally true, but SPEAR ( and Personal Defense Readiness, the "civilian" version...) approached the problem very differently than any system that I had seen before. The difference was the acknowledgment and embrace of the fact that you were not likely to be in control or even "on balance" at the moment that you realized you were in a fight. In fact, Tony's vernacular and perspective was right in line with the way I was teaching defensive firearms and the SPEAR System education that I got helped me to explain WHY I was teaching what I was teaching in a much better way. Working with Tony honestly inspired the last decade of work, research and evolution of what and how I teach Counter Ambush topics today.

There are a ton of PDR Coaches and SPEAR Instructors out there, I highly recommend getting with any of them to learn about the fundamentals of counter ambush response.
