I and the neighbors have recently noticed the appearance of several stray "Unsavory Small Pests" in the area. It's like somebody threw a giant bag of the #$@% things out one day! >:(
Yesterday it'd been requested that I take the initiative in getting rid of our new found problem.
I called animal control and they put out a trap in some bushes that caught one last night. But at that rate... ::)
Having past experience with a RWS P5 pistol at 100 yards I know it's accurate enough to do the job. But I'm looking for about double that delivered energy. At LOW noise levels.
Thoughts, experiences, opinions???
I know the RWS 34 is the "ultimate" (Everybody knows the Germans make good stuff! ;) ). But I've fired one, and "quite" isn't a word I'd use to describe them. I need quite. Under $300. It's hard to breech that spending point on these stupid things. >:(
I'm REALLY liking the looks of this. :)

The Gammo Whisper is supposed to be nice and quiet. Its available in .22 at under your price point. I've never fired one, but talking to reps and reading reviews it seems solid. Its not as solid as the RWS 34 (which is my ultimate no frills varmint whackinator), but still solid. The thing about the whisper is that like all suppressed weapons it doesn't eliminate the noise so much as it disperses it. It sounds softer and you don't know where it came from. Behind the trigger it sounds loud. 25 yards and at a 45 degree angle from the muzzle, not so much. Try Airgundepot.com. They are a good outfit and had some reasonably priced refurbs. Call their CS line. The guys are knowledgeable and like talking airguns. They will give you good advice.

Try thi. Its out of stock, but pyramid air is generally within $20. The actual whisper is a few bucks more, around $230 vs $180. Damned if I can tell the difference. Both .22 at 950 FPS with a built in suppressor and an el cheapo airgun scope thrown in.

I have a friend who has the whisper and loves it, but even at 1000 fps, you will still drop 2' at 100 yards.
What kind of critter?

I think we all know the answer to that one operator. The less said, the better.

I guess I must be naive. I could make a lot of guesses about what it is, but have no idea why any of them would be secret. Animal Control doesn't trap Liberals, do they? And I didn't think they came small enough for air guns?

Crossman is making one in .357 and the Sam Yangs will shoot .45 or .50 cal muzzel loading bullets. Plenty of gun for larger pests. ;) As far as Badger's problem? What I was trying to avoid saying was that you might bait them with Friskies and a bag of cat nip. But hey, I know nothing. 8)

As much as I love pets, feral cats or dogs can be a real problem and eliminating them is not a problem for me. If it were cats, a few cans of tuna in a location that is within easy air rifle distance would work, I killed a cat that was attacking my disabled cat with a blow gun, amazing how easy that 4" dart penetrated to the hilt.

Chipmunks are my problem. Taken 8 in the last ten days out the back yard. I opted for Weihrauch 77 in .22 with a Lothar Walther barrel and a 15x scope. Then my space only goes out to 20 yds.

On the ranch, I had all sorts of critters coming by. My bad, I had a domicile set up in the dirt-floor garage for the barn cats, especially over the winter so they could stay warm-ish, have water and some food. During the summer, only water, as they were to - and did - keep the rodent problem in check. So the wild beasties discovered the offerings and started coming in droves.
When the feral cat - a cast-off no doubt a year or 2 earlier - started coming by and beating up all of my tpms, i had to do something. I wasn't real happy about whacking a trapped cat, but it had to be done. And then the raccoon family stopped in and just tore the place apart trying to get at the cat food in the covered plastic garbage can. Whacked 3 of them, again in the trap. And then the free skunk in the barn under my feed pallet. And then - no, we won't talk about that one, but he got one of my chickens, so off he went.
Doesn't count the foxes (yes, plural), coyotes, and other assorted critters that stopped by but left unhindered. Living in the country is fun!

Get the whisper. Mine works great and it quiet unless you use the Gamo pellets that they advertise as being super fast. They are but you can hear the crack when they go super sonic. Accuracy is minute of pest.

Depending on distances, you might consider going old school with a wrist rocket and some 3/8" lead balls. Modern elastics will make that a lethal combo for small critter out to nearly 25 yards. And they make almost no noise.

THANKS for the solid advice so far.
It's really my option of what yardage I take these things out at. But the further away they are when they drop, the less it points the finger at me if someone see's the thing go down. Some of the grey haired female folk in the area have started feeding these da#$ things. If one of these well meaning idiots pieced together what happened to their cute little flea spreading hobo friends... It would be BAD! ;D
Since these things showed up my dog and my neighbors dogs have been getting eaten alive with fleas everytime they go outside. On top this there's a chance our dogs could be woopin on one of them and contract rabbies or something. NOT COOL!
It looks like the "Bone Collector", and "Whisper" are mechanically the same. The stock on the "Bone Collector" is a little nicer IMO.
Does anybody know if the power this type of rifle fires at is adjustable at all? I know paint ball guns offer this. It'd be nice if I could "tune it down" a bit for a warning shot if needed. ;)
-
The only wayto adjust velocity is to use a heavier pellet ;). No warning shots (buy an airsoft for that purpose). As far as the rifle, just make sure you use .22. .177 isnt enough gun, I don't care how fast its going. I'd also order a pellet sampler pack. Airguns can be finicky and you need head shots. Try for super domed, HP or pointed. I'd probably lean toward pointed if you are at any sort of extended range. You should be good out to 30-50 yards. Also, if the price is reasonable, go for a scope package. Failing that, buy a quality airun scope as a spring piston gun can eat a regular scope. If you still have that spare eotech it would work nicely.
Good luck.

Thats actually a REEEALLY good idea! Save me a couple bucks over buying a gun with a cheapo scope, and I'll have a much better package to boot! ;) THANKS FOR ALL THE GOOD ADVISE! :)
This has a scope already on it, but "70% quiter" is a tall claim. If it lives up to even HALF that... ;D

Look! I'm all politically correct and what not! No pellet rifles here! The trap is owned and was set by the city. I had NOOOOO involvement! ;)

I love cats! ;D

Oh, but what fun is that? Good to see they are doing their job. I'd buy the Gammo anyway. They are a lot of fun and lord knows the beasts may return. In Collier county they actually sterilize feral cats and release them. :o >:( ::). Cause god knows they will do no damage to the eco-system or get rabies two years from now. Not to mention that spaying them is so much cheaper than a hot shot. >:(
Ok, rant over. Still, buy the gun. ;)

Almost like somebody doesn't want the #$@# things roaming loose around the neighborhood spreading flea's and disease... ::)
VERY disapointing performance from the pellet gun!!! :( FINE job of marksmanship though!!! Anyone wanna take credit? ;)
