AL-QA'IDA has reportedly chosen a former Egyptian Special Forces officer as interim leader in the wake of Osama bin Laden's death earlier this month.
Saif al-Adel, a top al-Qa'ida strategist and senior military leader, has been tapped as "caretaker" chief of the group, CNN reported, citing former Libyan militant Noman Benotman, who has renounced al-Qa'ida's ideology.
Pakistan's The News newspaper corroborated the claim, citing unnamed sources in an article datelined Rawalpindi, a city home to the military headquarters of the Pakistani Armed Forces near the capital Islamabad.
The decision to chose Adel, also known as Muhamad Ibrahim Makkawi, came as militants grew increasingly restive over the lack of a formal successor to bin Laden, who was killed in a dramatic US commando raid deep in Pakistan on May 2, Benotman told CNN.
Bin Laden's long-time deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, another Egyptian, is considered to be his presumed successor.
Benotman said the appointment of Adel on a temporary basis may be a way for the group to gauge reaction to having someone outside the Muslim holy region of the Arabian Peninsula at the helm.

Hmmm...New targets of opportunity for an unnamed SEAL group. But I think the Paki paper got it right when they said the position was temporary.LOL

I wish they would start fighting each other to be the next leader. They could kill each other off.

Anybody tak notice that they guy is another Egytian? Former SF commander no less. How deeply imbedded in the Muslim Brotherhood is he, and how much of the new government is going to be Muslim Brotherhood too? Pretty good chance that the Brotherhood is in charge and will now have State support for it's off-shoot organizations, Hezbolla, Hamas, and now Al Queda.

Either that or they'll whack the bastard that much quicker. The MB is a big group with all sorts of factions. Now they finally get in power and get their turn at the trough. Maybe they are gung ho for the cause. Or maybe they want to get paid and sit in the corner office. Its like Bin Laden and the Saudis. Its an even money bet which way it will go, but no way in hell the Egyptian Army is leting go of the US military aid without a fight. Its a concern, but smart money says that this guy will be about as welcome in Egypt as a case of the clap. Of course, they are Arabs..... ::)

The Muslim Brotherhood that you people cheered in Egypt and now Libya, is an Anti Israel, anti US terror organization. It's the one thing FQ's "all sorts of factions" have in common.
I've said from the beginning, the new boss is worse than the old boss.
FQ again shows his deep understanding of history by completely overlooking the way the Egyptians jumped into the Soviet camp then back out depending on where they got the better payoffs.
My bet is China this time and Israel is screwed.

That was kind of my point Tom. Why should the Egyptians have been loyal to either side? They did the rational thing and played us off against each other to get the best deal. You'd have done the same if you were the President of Egypt (a position which is still open ;)). My point is that they have to make a call. Ally themselves with a bunch of suicide bombers or cozy up to us. It seems like a no brainer. As for the Chinese? They will be a business partner, but nothing else. What is China's Middle East Policy? Its to get the oil and STFU about the rest. They won't change that since its working for them. As long as they can stymie us and advance their own interests without getting dinged for it they're happy. The last damn thing they want is to be an active front line player in the Israeli-Arab conflict. They have their own muslim extremists to deal with.
