Title: Finally Tested The 460 With Proper Ammo - Yowsers!!
Post by: sledgemeister on May 23, 2011, 10:08:20 AM
I finally got to load up some 460's yesterday and tried them at the range today, I have not been able to get any factory ammo in Tassie so I had to try and make some of my own.

Two Words - Holy Shit! lol :D

A friend gave me some sierra 240 grain sjhp projectiles which I loaded up with 43gr of AR2205. (min is 40 max 45gr) I figured 43 as being some where in the middle, they certainly do bark a little.
Standing next to it when its shot is a whole new experience and you can really feel the pressure waves generated. It seemed to produce some awfully cool looking flames from the barrel and cylinder gap. I wouldnt want to have my thumb/finger or hand anywhere near it.
I shoot the .44mag probably nearly as much as my little .22 so am used to things like metal plates being smacked hard, I can advise the 44 has nothing on the 460 in terms of brute force, it was like it was hit by Thors Hammer. I am sure i heard the steel plate gasp "I surrender" a second after I hit it, and while it dinged it noticably it was the fracture in the chain holding the plates as I found quite interesting.
I have shot cans of cordial (soda cans) before with my 44 and they look impressive, when I shot one with the 460 its atomised the contents and all you saw was a orange mist (fanta). I shot two cans and found less than 1/3 the aluminium for both, it was like the stuff just dissapeared. A frend took video and when I get it I will post, looked cool.
The recoil was pretty decent, certainly not uncomfortable or scary as you hear people bang on about, but you knew you was throwing some serious foot lbs down range. Of the loads I was using I calculated that the 240gr proj doing around 2100fps was generating approx a 2340 Muzzle Energy, now consider a .44 magnum using 240gr (1500fps) pill produces about 1135 ME!
Its such a shame we cant get permission to use these things for hunting in australia (apart from NT and then only if you bend over and say pretty please and use a guide).
They would do nasty things to a deer, hog, roo and i have no doubt would seriously ruin a donkey, camel or even maybe a buffalos day with the right projectile.
So what you guys waiting for get out there and get one!!!!
You know you wanna!

Or, I could I could just get a tax stamp and chop the barrel down on my .270, and put a pistol grip on it. It would only cost me 700 fps on a smaller piece of lead. :o ;D Ye Gods man, if ever there was a bufalo pistol, that's it. Lobby those wankers to let you use it.
FQ13 who is not at all evious. Nope. Not even a little. ;)

Very cool, Sledge.   The 460 is on my list.

Is 240gr the "normal" bullet weight?   I hadn't really researched it, but I would have thought for this monster they'd be using 300gr+ bullets.   Does the high velocity tear up the pistol bullet jackets?   Or are these made tougher than normal pistol bullets?

I know for the .454 285+ is more normal weight with 325 as heavy though you can get them all the way to 400.

Truly watch where your digits is sitting.  Somewhere in the archive of posts there are some pics of a poor sod that severed his thumb from his hand when he got too close to a cylinder gap firestorm.  Not a pretty sight...

I was thinking of that too. It turned his thumb to hamburger.

And the ammo. :-\ The fact that it will shoot .454 and .45 makes it semi-practical, but unless you reload and know what you're doing, its a bit prohibitive. Still very cool though. ;D

PS Sledge
How is the accuracy with .45 Colt and .454 if you've patterned them yet?

Didn't he sue S&W because they didn't have a warning not to put his body parts next to the cylinder gap?

We have people who come to the indoor range where I am one of the RSOs that shoot .454, .460, .500 and .50AE. When the first 3 go off, the RSOs get real busy as everyone forgets what they're doing and step back to see what the heck just washed over them!  ;D

Very loud. And, on occasion, we shut off the lights (no windows on the shooting line of course) just to see the fountain of flame they emit. Very, very waaaay cool!

Congrats, Sledge. Just one question - doesn't shooting that thing upside down on the bottom of the Earth give you a headache?   ???  ::) ;)

I got that same reaction (minus the light dimming thing) shooting +P .357s out of a Bond Derringer. Who me? Loud? ;D I really want a BFG (I don't know why, I just do). If anything would get me to think about reloading its this beast. Keep us posted Sledge, I absolutely love it! ;D

I've not seen +P .357 magnum.  I'd like to try it.  Or is it 357 Sig to which you are referring?

I got a few loose from a cop friend. Winchester I think, but I won't swear it, its been a while. Apparently  LEO only. Or, he could have been full of crap (I don't look gift ammo in the mouth ;)). I do know they were zippier than win white box loads. Beyond that, I have no idea.
