I refer you all to the thread about the ACLU and the new law in Utah. I read through the thread and got to thinking ..... what do any of you carry to prove that you are a citizen of the U. S.? I carry nothing except my DL and CCW. Would that be enough? Do I need more or are we going to have to have papers (ausweis?) to prove we have the right to be on U. S. property?
Personally, I think we need to ship illegals back from where they came but where does that leave those of us who were born here are who are naturalized?

My Minnesota drivers license will tell them that I am a citizen when it is run. Our son-in-law is Canadian with a green card that by law he must carry at all times (replaces need for passport as proof), and his drivers license will indicate he is not a citizen if run. Our children are naturalized citizens, do not need to carry anything other than drivers license in the United States.
Can't speak for all states, but that covers us around here.
I went to Canada with our son-in-law last month, and Canada really questioned his status.

Here, at least in CT and MA, a birth certificate or green card for resident aliens is required to obtain a driver license. No further proof is required. When I came back here from MA, I had to forfeit my MA license and STILL show proof of citizenship with my BC..
If you're an illegal, than your driving illegally or using false documentation which, in and of itself, is a felony!

Where I live the birth certificate is needed to get or renew a DL but since. in some states, it's a snap to get a phony DL I get the feeling we'll need more than that. I'm just curious, the thread got me thinking.

I would think as long as you're a US citizen and carry a driver's license or gov't id you should be fine. If you're a legal alien, carry your greencard, etc.
I hate to say it, but I imagine race would play a big part on whether someone is asked or not. Profiling generally works pretty well. I doubt, however, that an illegal Scandenavian would be harassed too much. :-\

Depends on where they are and how thick the accent. Outside of minnisoootaaa they probably are.

A DL or SS card should do it, as neither should be issued without a birth certificate, green card or work/student visa. I'm a prof for God's sake, I don't want my exchange students to have to carry a passport around. But they all have DLs or state IDs so they can cash checks and drink beer. If they had to show valid paperwork to get those, there wouldn't be a problem. Here's what gets my panties in a twist. The folks who say states have no right to enforce federal immigration law like Arizona, are the first to say the federal government can't dictate to the states who gets a DL, so there can be no federal standard for what is, in all actuality, a national ID. >:(

FQ, I know about the students but what I was thinking is that with the ease at which DL's and such can be faked what is the government going to demand beyond that. This Patriot Act and Home Security crap scares the hell out of me.

I think I just said that M58. Getting a DL/state ID should require a birth certificate or appropriate visa paperwork. Once that is done there should be no need for anything more. As far as fraud, include a hologram or magnetic strip in the things so frauds don't pass muster. Its no different than watermarks on currency.

To have a CHL issued to you, means having gone through a (FBI, ATF?)background check. If you were issued a concealed carry license, that should be enough proof, unless you're dealing with an asshole. At that point NO documentation will do.

Fake DL's are easy to spot. Most bartenders can. A LEO has no problem what so ever telling a real one from a fake.

I'd guess the Post Office is more concerned with you being the John Doe who lives at the correct address than that you are one of the John Does who has a birth certificate that says so.

state armed protection officer license, state DL, Army ID, HCP, SS card, old Army drivers license and much older Draft card ;D
