Seem's like everytime I see something realistic about being prepared for disaters they all asume you've got plastic sheeting. It can be most any one of several types of "disaster". Hurricane, chemicals, nuclear, floods, on and on.
Last time I saw it for real was the Japan nuclear disaster. The news told people on Hawaii and even the west coast to seal their doors and windows up with sheeting and tape.
It seems like a simple enough thing, but do YOU have any??? Each time I read about or hear of disasters happening, and their saying how to use it I find myself thinking "who in the world ACTUALLY has that stuff in their homes???"
We talk a LOT about "being prepared" on here. And many say they are... So, are YOU? REALLY?

Resent hard storms here in Pa a few weeks ago left me without power for 5 days. Had plenty of food and other related preps on hand if needed. My main lack of prep was a generator that I was/am saving up for. I had 5 gallons of water for "bird baths" and basically did as I did in the field when in the military. All in all I made out OK. Had I had a wife and kids it would have been different.
I was working 3rd shift when Three Mile Island went down. I remember the inpact on my family and area when nobody knew what to do. So in the event of nuclear or Bio event - I believe that it will be over by the time word is given - just like TMI.
Some people think that I am wasteing my time and money on preparing for SHTF. I would rather have something than nothing. The new edition of the LDS prep manual does not include the "Katrina" section as did the old version. It was thoughtful reading and people hunderds of miles from an inpacted area had better be ready for the "wave" of trouble heading their way.
I am not a Mormon, here is the site, scroll down to the LDS manual - it was 222 pages long - but well worth the info and thought prep. Abysmal.com

Awsome post. I was hoping to hear from others on the things they'd not realized until "it happened". Power outages are like camping trips, you think you've got everything until... ;)
What size generator you looking for? Or should I say, what all are you looking to run?

dipisc - you probably had around 25 gallons of water available that you hadn't thought of...in your hot water heater. Good enough for drinking.

Backwoods home excellent magazine. Alpine survival and Mountain house are other good resources.

dipisc - you probably had around 25 gallons of water available that you hadn't thought of...in your hot water heater. Good enough for drinking.

Hell, that's better than having gold. Literally. In a TEOTAWAKI event, gold is just pretty metal. Beer on the other hand (channeling Homer Simpson) "Cold, delicious beer...... ;D
