Title: I got a NEW AR!!!! UPDATE
Post by: Ksail101 on June 18, 2011, 10:24:23 AM
I've never put pics on here before I always had someone do it for me. But I decided it was time to be a big boy so if these dont come up right oh well Ill try again.

If they are blurry or tilted or the lighting is bad I meant to that. Its called special effects.  ;)

Bushmaster AR. Just the Standard M4A3. I will be building it up have no fear.

Here is an update. Almost finished. These are things I like on an AR. Your thoughts may be different. But I like what I like.
Two Piece Quad Rail. (I'd like to do Free Float here at some point but this setup is pretty solid and a 1/4 the price)
Viking Tactics Light mount. Im running my Fenix Tk11, I love this light cause its so bright, but might have to change it out. Ive had this for about 2 years now and love it, but it kinda has too many features for a dedicated weapon light.
Magpul ASAP (this was a bitch to put on and I scratched the shit out of the spanner nut and Flattened a couple spots on the treads. I bought a tool from Brownells and it didnt work well at all.) With MS2 Sling. Love it.
In the mail and dont know why it isnt here yet I have a Larue FUG on the way.
Also I will put an optic on it soon most Likely Eotech 553 I dont need any mag or I'd go with an ACOG but for home defense the type shooting Im able to do around here its a waste to get one. Id even love to get 12 inch barrel but thats in the far future. Just waiting to save a little. I put about 200 rounds through this rifle this weekend and am just fine with Iron sights and actually the rifle ran like a dream. Compared to my old M16 in the Army this thing is like a Pimp Mobile.
I Know the pics suck its my Phones cam and Im not good at it.

You know I was almost going to do that. I was even thinking about painting it and everything. LOL

Nice gun. Could you tell me a bit about the sling? I would be interested in a one point if it actually works. Mostly since DPMS is too cheap to put forward sling mounts on the Sportical and tying a piece of rope around the damn thing means the other kids make fun of you. ;D

This isnt a real single point. It is a Ghetto version we used to do to our rigs over seas. I ordered the Magpul ASAP. They are kinda a bitch to put on cause you have to take off the buffer tube , but I like single point slings. When we started messing with our rifles for riding in Trucks and stuff people started using 550 cord and duct tape and moved basically the front sling point back closer to the mag well and added a bit of length to the sling so it would be around you incase you let go it wouldnt fly out, but so you could also shoulder it and fire.

Then some of us started doing what you see done to my AR right now and take the sling and run it through the stock loop only lash it down with the clip and duct taped that so there was no way it could slip if you did the lashing right it wont slip anyway its just more of a fail safe. But the single point had certain advantages like if you had to transfer to your other shoulder or move the weapon around you could without getting all tangles up in the lengthened sling. I've seen some after market kinds that will have like a speed clip the let you take in the slack fast and release it fast also. But the main disadvantage to a single point sling is carrying the weapon. Now here in the states its not like over seas where you have to carry the damn thing even to go shower so it doesnt matter are much but single point slings kinda suck to carry long term.

You need some sort of sling though even your Rope if you have it set up that you can use it then great. If your running through your house maybe up the stair and trip, I've done it a 100 times you want to be able to be a monkey and put your hands out and not lose your rifle down the flight you just ran up. Or the main reason if you are in the situation you need to be able to let go and transition to your pistol without dropping it on the ground. I was over in Iraq at the very beginning and at that time the products that are out now were not as widely available and some were being tested at that time. So we made our own shit. That rope you speak of what the original Magpul ASAP or Larry Vickers Sling. Some soldier somewhere carried his rifle on a tour with rope and came back and made a piece of gear to match that. So use it see what you like. Make and improvised single point carry it around mess around with some movement drills, do the same with double or even triple. See what you think is comfortable then. Spend the hundred dollars and make it look pretty if you want.

Quaker, your rifle didn't come with a front sling mount???  PICS!  I know you can buy each little original part down to the replacement rivet that holds the ring on.  I actually drilled out the rivet and removed the front ring on my DPMS because it clangs against the forearm.  One point sling idea proved really nice until I tried moving faster than a creeping pace and not holding onto the gun with one hand.  The rifle slaps against you as you walk / run.   :(  I tried elastic ones and everything.  They just left the gun flopping around WAY to loose for me.

Right now I've completely removed any sling at all from mine (and prefer it that way), but if I were to put a sling on it (to me the .308 AR's are to freakin heavy and pokey to use a sling on at all!) after trying near everything I could find I ended up back prefering a plane old 2 point just like on any other rifle (but with a little quick clip thing that wraps around the barrel, through the gas block as the front attachment point).  It's just as quick to draw if you "spin it up from the bottom", doesn't flop around uncontrollably, and isn't as likely to get caught up as the three point harnesses and all the trapeze looking rigs out there.  JUST MY FINDINGS / OPINION.  Relax ninja's!  ;)

Look, I just want to be able to throw the damn gun over my shoulder when I walk down range to check the targets. There is zero tactical concern here. If its a tactical situation it will be in my hands, if not, it will be over my shoulder. The cheap SOBs at DPMS (who put together a very nice and accurate rifle in the sportical) decided they didn't need to put a front sling mount on the thing. It would have set them back literally about $1.50 at the factory, but will cost me north of $50 to fix. >:(

I say get in the habit of carrying it.  You bought it for what would be a martial law kinda situation right?  The guy wearing his rifle on a sling is the guy who's last to draw in any combat scenario.  Guess where that gets you.

If you MUST.  http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=111378 (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=111378)

Again, ninja's relax!  Any AR thread is like blowing a mall ninja whistle!!!   :D

Hey Fight I think they make front sling mounts that with clip right on your front rail. And then its just a matter of getting a any sling. For pure comfort factor the two point sling old grand dad used is great. In that situation I like them a little longer than say what you'd have on an old scout rifle. I like to sling across my body. That way I can use my hands and everything.

For comfort do not get a single point. Thats my opinion. I really suggest though if you are ever thinking about deploying your AR in any type of fight you get used to running a sling that is mission ready, but I am a paranoid war vet that thinks ied's are planted on I-5 when I drive to work. 8)

I am no Ninja nor SF operator or Merc. I just know a sling is like a third hand in a fight.

Very nice Ksail. Sweet and shooter friendly. The way they should be. Not uber railed, or tacticooled out the wazoo.

Congrats, look fwd to reading how it shoots for you.

Ksail101, What are the pistols in the picture?

One is just a plain old Springfield GI. The other is Kimber Desert Warrior.

The Springer is the best deal in guns I believe. I paid right around 500 for it and it shoots non stop. The Kimber has been beyond great too but you pay for it. I changed out the ambi safety as you might tell. The grips arent the best but I havent really found anything to replace them so I just keep those on there.  I will be changing the Mainspring Housing to arched whenever I feel like doing so. But those are all personal things.
