That is an excellent steel for forging larger bleads. Tough and resiliant, holds an edge very well, needs skill to resharpen as it is hard (usually low 50 on the RC scale).

That is why the bayonet was invented!

By "longer blades" I presume you mean short and long swords, not knives. Or something else?
What kinds of "skill to resharpen" is needed? Hopefully not as interesting as what is required for samurai blades (real ones with all of the foldings). I have a ceramic sharpener I use on my Kershaw carry knife that controls the angle fairly well.
I ask, cuz I am looking to one of these shorter sword blades. CCWs in ND cover blades too. How cool is that?

Yep, I mean LONG knives to swords.
As far as 'skill' you need to know what angle it was sharpened at originally. Honing will usuually do but when it needs to be truely resharpened you will need at least a medium and fine stone as well as your ceamic hone. It will take time and a steady hand.

And on some I have found it truly is an art. Blades very in the angle that they are sharpened from 30 to 35 degrees and some you need to ask the manufacture, I know I wound up doing that with my Cold Steel.

Sorry, I just thought about this! I dont mean to be plugging stuff on here. I honestly dont have anything to do with the AT swords I just admire them greatly. For the first time the other day I read the text at the top of the page and thought eveyone would like it.

No sweat Lucas, owning a gun is a personal choice, just like the type of gun you own. A person who belongs to the Society for Creative Anachronism, might feel that a firearm does not suit their personality.
Besides, If the rest are like me their first thought when they read your post was, "Words ? There were words on the page ?" ;D I had to go back to look again. ;D

Sorry about what? They are cool swords and it seems, made from excellent steel so what's to be sorry about?
Do you know where I can get a good but reasonably priced (read cheap ) sword cane?
-
If you want any type of quality go to museum replicas and check out the Windlass Steelcrafts sword canes. I have handled many in my life and this is the only one I own (out of 58 swords). Every other one I have seen is been has been very cheaply made. It runs about $100 but I tell you this, it is worth every penny. If you are looking for something more like a novelty swordsdirect.com has several I think ranging from $50 to $20 dollars.
My father gave me my first knife when I was four and I been obsessed with weapons as a whole ever since!!!
You name it, I want it!

Ahhh I love swords..
Hold your ears Haz..(http://www.cascity.com/howard/animations/200.gif) ..I'm going into "New Age " on you.. LOL
Swords...the weapon used during the Middle Ages. I love the smooth feel of the golden crossgaurd in my hand..
Probably comes from my lifetime as a medieval jousting knight in the 10th century. I dimly recollect that life was hard, brutal at times as duty and honor came with a price. My loyalty and my willingness to shed blood with my sword was my responsibility to my lord, my people and my God.
;D ****Okay... how many of you are calling 911 sending the paddy wagons after me?" ;D
Don't do it.. I also had a few lives as a Shaman and Sorcerer.... ;)
And you thought I was a simple uncomplicated country girl...(http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/cool_shades.gif).. now didn't you..
