Title: is it possible to get a .223 AR and a .22 AR upper for $1500 out the door?
Post by: wtr100 on June 30, 2011, 08:57:53 AM
just got a NICE bonus at work - so is it possible?

I want one CMP/NRA match legal - shoots some matches - not compete because that would infer a chance of winning - well maybe the blind squirrel division

So it's mostly a target piece - not kicking doors in 'the stan'

Can't see why not.  I have seen lots of ARs in the 6-800 area and .22 uppers for 3-400.

Not sure what a dedicated .22LR upper will do for you.  Different twist maybe?  Conversion kits for an AR-15 run about $150.00.  That's basically a different bolt and magazine.

WTR, if you are shooting under 600 yard, pick up a quality AR A3, I am real fond of DPMS, but there are lots of good ones, and that should be around 700 beans, then get a tactical solutions upper and at least 5 black dog mags. I think you will be very happy, spikes makes a nice upper too, but I think Tac solutions has it down.

And, I happen to know that Haz has an AR carbine that could be had at a fair price...  He can lead you to a .22 upper that will have your total in the range you want--or less.

As long as you don't want an aimpoint on both uppers....

You could pick and choose AR parts, build a great 5.56/.223 with multi cal lower...for $800 +/-...Than a top shelf upper for a few beans more, and have a couple hundred bucks left over for ammo....

As long as you don't want an aimpoint on both uppers....

You sound like me. You want a range toy and a "what if" gun. You're honest about it. I like my DPMS sportical a lot. I paid I think about $650 for it, but prices were higher then. Its darn accurate and has yet to  jam on me. I would however advise going up one model. The reason is not the milspec receiver with the F/A and dust cover. Those you can live without easily. Its the sights. BUIS are pricey. I could have moved up one model and saved money over a set of YH BUIS, and gotten a forward sling mount. I just was in a kind of "now or never" situation". Get a flat top with an A3 front sight or one with a detachable handle from DPMS. They are inexpensive, accurate and good to go out of the box. No fooling around with a DIY project, and if it doesn't work, just send it back. OR look at Smith. Gander has continually run deals on a railed Smith flat top with built in flip up BUIS for well  under $1000. Its a nice rifle, I've fondled one in the store, and the sights are adequate. I'm sure you can pick up a .22 upper either new or used for under $500 at AR15 forum or similar sites.

+1 On the Tactical Solutions dedicated .22 upper.  When I got mine this guy had the best prices around, very fast shipping, and a great guy to deal with.  No dog in this hunt, I'm just a satisfied customer.
