WHYYYYY would state inmates EVER have internet access at ALL? ??? >:( ::)
And the Fed gov is talking about RAISING tax's... What? So federal prisoners can get Xbox 360 "Gold" memberships? >:(

If you are paying all your taxs your either a fool or a idiot...
-
I was once asked by someone Why I could "get creative" when I did my taxes and didn't feel guilty about cheating the government.
My answer was: If you came home from work, pulled up in front of your house and found a pickup truck loaded with your belongings just starting to pull away, how guilty would you feel running up and grabbing your TV out of the back of it?

Your blanket statements make me want to puke.

Thank you Tom, well said.

TAB has been using the "every one else is doing/ it's done all the time" argument else where as well.
In another thread I asked whether he was a "man" or a "lemming".
Guess we can figure out the answer.

+1
I do my own taxes and always have. I don't make a ton of money and can't deduct more than the standard deduction. To cheat on my piddly income would be next to impossible anyway and not worth the risk or hassle of even an audit. While I don't like that only 51 percent of the working population actually pays any tax, I'll still pay my share until the system is changed.

so do you pay sale tax on your mail order item? Legally you are supose too( just not to the vendor.)

Sales Tax in NH.....................funny

so do you pay sale tax on your mail order item? Legally you are supose too( just not to the vendor.)
Whether you believe it or not, I did last year for the first time. Doesn't mean I feel good about the previous years, just didn't think of it at the time. I think it worked out to about 50 bucks...a lot of what I buy online isn't taxable anyway in MA or CT.
-
I do on most of the stuff I buy online, which is almost 100% biz related, I'm writing off the item, If I don't pay the sales tax and I get audited. Its going to hurt. ( more so since we have spent 78k this year in "mail order" damn clamp on circuit evalators are $1300 each)
-
If you're buying for "resale" normally you're not required to pay sales taxes. The person who you're selling the item would pay. You are considered the "wholesaler"...
ps I was a purchasing agent at General Dynamics for several years.
-
whole sale adds a whole new leve of "fun" to the mix...

What's a "sales tax" ?
-
What's a "sales tax" ?
Something that Massholes drive north to avoid daily.....it's silly really for day to day things too as MA doesn't charge sales tax on clothes under 50 bucks, food, etc.....the savings on booze is nothing unless you're buying 1000 bucks worth of wine or something. Smokes are the same way!
And, if you live in MA and buy your stuff in NH, you're supposed to claim it at the end of the year anyway!

The fair tax stuff is BULL SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What it does is make it so people don't want to spend money. which will hurt all but the very well off and some needed professionals. All the blue coller in service industrys will get fooked, so will most of the small biz owners. Last time I checked most of the population is employeed in small biz.( may have changed in the last couple of years.)
It would also crush construction. which is a very large chucnk of the GDP

It did, majority are employed in "the public sector" now.
In other words in some way employed by some level of Govt.

You again show your shallow thinking. 10 - 20% of what I spend is a lot less than 25% of what I EARN, and I'm in a low bracket.
You ignore the little detail about that being instead of an income tax. Paying even 25% of what I spend, instead of 25% of what I earn would put more money in my pocket.
The other option is a flat rate, the number I have heard bounced around was 17% for every one, no deductions, no exemptions.
If you earn $1 you pay 0.17, if you earn $100,000,000 you pay 17 million How is this not fair ?
Best thing is the sales tax would keep the scum bags from cheating.
-
...................Best thing is the sales tax would keep the scum bags from cheating.
Which means the cash crowd now has a stake in the game. People would get used to the sales tax when they got those bigger, fatter paychecks rolling in....except for the cash crowd. You've heard me beotch about people earning $100-$150k cutting yards, home renovation/construction work, etc. that escape income taxes by cash..some even having the odacity to get food stamps and other government assistance.
Everyone....everyone...should pay something to have stake in what goes on. A big ass sales tax with no income taxes would bring in a lot of revenue from the cash crowd....heck, some people might even have to get off their fat asses and cut their own lawns like I do....instead of hiring illegals. Come to think of it...that may go a long way to curbing the illegal invaders.

Hoo boy! This is a fun read. Y'all need to keep this one going for a long time.

A consumption tax in lieu of income tax puts a thousand dollars a month back in my pocket. It eliminates income tax, SS tax, Medicare Tax in their entirety. Today, I pay 6.25% on everything but food and cheap clothes as a sales tax.
Give me a grand a month and turn that into a 17 percent consumption tax and I'm in the black every month. Remember, the consumption differential is only 10.75 more of my income than it was before under the convoluted cluster f..k IRS tax system that was stealing a grand a month or 18 percent of my gross, not counting Social Security!
Might be a bit complicated for a Poly Sci prof but give it time FQ....someday you're graduate from third grade math and stop thinking Rachael Maddow is a hot dude/chick, er....something resembling something you could stick your.....
never mind...

And then all of those drones in the IRS, tax attorneys, etc. will need to find gainful employement that, hopefully, contributes in a postive way to improving life for all of us. Right now the best you can say about them is that they are a monstrous pain in the arse.

Needless to say, the state tax would still be there or would increase if the state did away with income tax. Basically rape no matter how you slice it. Still, it is much "fairer", IMHO, as everyone who makes a purchase (okay, exclude food if you must) contributes. When the powers that be talk about "shared burden" they do a good job of making sure that the people that don't pay income tax (and live off of mine) are excluded from the conversation.

For someone who is supposed to be academic, you, sir, are a feaking moron. If you will examine the actual precepts of the Fair Tax, you will discover that the increase in "sales tax"is fully and completely rebated, to the extent that it is a cost of living, in the form of a government check (or credit) to every taxpayer--the value of which is determined by the average expense of the number of people dependant upon the salary of the wage earner.
Secondarily, because all manufactures will no longer have to pay anything like a value-added tax, or sales tax on the items they purchase to manufacture their goods, their prices will be lower, and competition will then force them to reduce their prices by the 20% or so factor.
Your income will actually belong to you, without the 40% or so currently going to the government. If you spend you money on stuff, there will be a 20-something percent tax, however that 20-something percent will have been eliminated in the actual cost of the item bought. So in real dollars, it will be exactly the same price.
If you don't spend your money, like you might actually save a greater portion of the income earned by your personal sweat: it doesn't get taxed.
Quaker, I know you have been brainwashed by the liberal establishment, but try and kick the inclination to be stupid and give some actual thought to things before you spout your foolishness.
If you want to engage in a real discussion of the benefits of the Fair Tax, I'd love to school you.

Attorneys don't know shit about economics, pure and simple. It's like expecting an engineer to be able to spell or be able to compose a cogent sentence, a cop to perform brain surgery or plumber clean your teeth!

Yeah I like the food and medicine exclusion. Not all food, just basics like bread, flour, sugar, milk, canned veggies, but not processed things like chips, cookies, frozen dinners, soda pop, etc. I can easily afford tax on medicine now, but no so much 15 and 20 years ago when I was paying out my deductible in January and had about 30% of my total income going to medical bills.
Towit the BS about being able to deduct above 7.5% AGI (I think that's the number) got me $21 or $23 dollars for 46 hours of paperwork back around '93 or '94 over standard deductions. In fact, just to jump up on the soap box a bit, when my wife was dying I was leaving home at 5:45 AM getting back at 6:30 or so in the evening, cleaning the kids up (5,3 & 1) cooking supper, and the next day's meals, cleaning the house, washing the clothes, etc. getting to bed at 11:30 or so, waking up two or three times after that to make certain the wife's oxygen was still on and seeing if she was still warm. All I remember is the politicians saying they needed to help people and they raised taxes on food and medicine. Not a single person on the dole (kinfolk included) so much as offered to wash dishes, rake leave or cut the grass on the weekend so I could spend a little time with my children or get a break. I had to work to pay bills and keep insurance and didn't get frickin' dime from the government (not that I wanted it) or a break on taxes (other than the twenty bucks). I still see TV news in my head with the poor people with the color TV's in the background moaning about how bad they needed another buck and decent meat (steak I could not afford) and then pop here came the food and medicine sales tax increases.
I believe that we should work to pay our bills and sometimes tragedy and the accompanying economic hardship comes with it....we should be resolute and do all we can without government help and I was glad to be able to work and keep at least some money flowing to a multitude of bills until I crawled out from underneath them 11 years or so later. If it gets really bad I guess there is always bankruptcy (unless the pols took that away recently). I actually don't have any fishhooks in my pockets for helping people who are truly down on their luck, but the government is used by politicians to buy votes with my money to support lazy ass people who won't work. Now the same politicians are crashing the economy to lock in their power and the people's dependence on government by killing jobs. Defund the bastards.
And, oh yeah, let the lazy ass people who refuse to work and who think the government owes them something stand on their own...or not.
OK..off the box.

Some parts have, others are booming.
You would be amazed at the number of people had "hands on" in the construction of your home. Its in the many thousands, thats just people that litterly touched something related to your home. Rahter its raw goods, manufactoring or the actuall construction.

Timothy and others
That 10-25% is on TOP of your state sales tax, unless your state magically develops another way of raising money. And yes Virgina, it does apply to services, and housing as well. Add an extra 30% (including state, local and federal sales taxes) to hiring everyone from a plumber to a doctor (closely related professions in my case ;)), or for that matter throw in mechanics, roofers and restraunteurs, and what you get is just what TAB described. Its the anti small business tax. It would do to our current economy what Smoot Hawley did in the 1930s. Because Crusader, you say its deductible as COLA and comes out in the wash? Look, the money comes from somewhere. A consumption tax will, by its very nature, reduce consumption by raising prices. Guess what drives our economy, since we pissed away our manufacturing and export sectors? Its consumer spending. Funding the government via a mechanism that will decrease the very engine that drives the economy seems bone stupid to me.

Consumerism cannot survive on it's own without printing worthless money, and then, for only so long before it catches up.
Reagan was wrong to go along and push a "service based" economy; it was as plain as the nose on your face where this would lead. Perhaps it was necessary to address the Cold War, but you can only have so many burger flippers out there. Someone has to produce something. During the Clinton Administration, thanks to Newt's Contract With America, the budget got "balanced" but a false belief pervaded the country....once we got this thing under control we were all going to be able to retire and sit on our asses.
The people who make the $100+ sneakers, clothes, cars, electronics, etc. are willing to make that deal only so long. They too want their children to be well fed, clothed and have a future. So long as a purchaser can provide something of value greater than they can provide within, then trade will continue. So now we see an out-of-control free spending government who keeps pushing us to the economic tipping point. The value of the $ as a reserve currency is essential to the nation who wants others to provide the good life for them....when a currency has no real value, much more a reserve currency, then the Age of the Consumer is over.
No matter how many people want to sit on their ass it will still take some number of people to grow, transport and sell the food, provide the electricity, fix the roads, ....heck, fix your heater and A/C. We have too many people sitting on their ass taking who are wanting to force the worker to provide more and work harder....that's one of the results of taxation in this nation.
When the "Age of the Consumer" comes to a climatic close it will be very easy to discern. Then we will find the true value of a service based econnomy of office workers, burger flippers, community organizers.....etc.
-
All very true Rastus, but why hasten that day through a boneheaded tax policy? Seems to me that trying to revive our industrial sector and improving our science and technology education might be a better idea for a long term solution.

I believe you cover every economic issue we've got with that statement. Well, except that our president seems to have the same war policy as Hitler. Their smaller than us... ATTACK! Difference being that Hitler had reason other than lining his personal pocket.
Thats not going to change no matter what happens. You've seen and know these people as well as we all do... They'll simply turn to crime if deprived of free riches before putting an honest effort toward supporting themselves in a productive society. ANYONE care to disagree?!?
I've been under the impression the time you speak of started on inauguration day of King Obama. :-\

A song for Badger. I think this might have been written a few years before BO. Blame Nixon, Carter and Reagan, particularly Reagan, as he oversaw the greatest damage and encouraged it with his tax policies. But it isn't solely him to blame. Hell, Clinton and W. with their cheer leading NAFTA and the WTO are up there, and since BO hasn't threatened to withdraw from either, if changes weren't made, blame him too. ;D :P

So ALL this brings up one nagging question. Being "King for a Day". What would all of you do? It's easy to talk the talk...
My answer is simple. And we've got the military to stick it out. Close the borders for an undetermined amount of time (years). END WORLD TRADE. Give a six month warning. Then lock it down!

Slightly less radical here. Step one close the border. Step two, adjust the capital gains tax so that you get a total write off on profit made from a real business here in the US, not just paper profits (investment should be encouraged, but a small tax should be allowed) Step three, tax the profits and products made by US corporations overseas as if they were foreign goods and disallow any deduction as a "business expense" for any worker or facility built overseas. Fourth, admit that Ross was right and NAFTA did generate a "giant sucking sound" (I'll admit that I was for it as a good little free market libertarian, but hey, I grew up, and so should the country. :P) I'm all for NAFTA, but only for NORTH America, you know, the parts where we both speak the same language and enjoy the same standard of living. Mexico can pound sand. As far as the rest, I open the floor.

Cut spending, beginning with Congressional pay and bennies, cut Congressional staff. slash "foreign aid". completely eliminate all federal agencies that are duplicated at the state level such as HHS Get rid of illegal aliens .
Generate new sources of revenue Import tariffs, ( higher for US companies that manufacture overseas, lower for foreign companies that manufacture or assemble here ) end the war on drugs, "quit sending money to 3rd world shitholes, legalize , regulate , and tax exactly the same as "demon rum". Fine the crap out of any one employing illegal aliens, and seize the aliens assets before deportation.
Oversight make the tax code simple enough for the average idiot to figure out, (probably Flat rate, no exemptions , no deductions ) Line item veto, abolish the Fed. hold the Treasury Dept accountable for all all US Govt financial transactions by giving enforcement powers to the GAO. END DEFICIT SPENDING !
That's all I can think of with out doing research, but it should make a good start.
