Title: Deal from AIM Surplus on Mosin-Nagants
Post by: alfsauve on July 15, 2011, 04:22:50 PM
$79.95  Hex receiver.  Looks very nice

Even I'm tempted at this price.  Shipping for me is $13, so the total would be $92.92.   Looks nice.  Oh, I've got a C&R so no transfer fees, unless I charge it to myself.  Gee the log book would have 1 entry.

My log book is also empty. But a K-31 Swiss, or Lee-Enfield SMLE might be the first..... ;D

Our local Fleet Farm has been selling Moisins for $90 - how is this such a great deal?

If you've got decent ones locally its not. For me, very few places carry them and they want $150 or more for something that looks like it went through the battle of Stalingrad. A good condition rifle for under $100 is a deal, but that depends on where you live.

I've seen MN's with all matching numbers that fit together like junk, and MN's that were rebuilt with nothing matching that work slick as greased owl doody.  Different manufacturing plants, some with barrels shot out, rusted out, and some that looked factory new, some "armory rebuilt", some even missing pieces!  All on the same rack, same supplier, same "grade", same price.   :-\

IMO, the balance and feel of the M30 is so nice (perfect!) it's a more practical and better gun than the M44.  For being a broom handle, they carry through the woods EXTREMELY well to my experience.  And the bayonet could be used to "poke" critters on the other side of a river if needed!   ;D

Last MN I bought I told them to just keep the accesory package, just give me the bayonet.  There's to many of these things around to ever have collector value (talking about the $90 buys), and I've got to much junk as it is.

The one Quaker ordered has a realy nice looking finish on the steel.  Let us know how it is!

I've paid less than $80.00 for most of my Mosins, the most I have ever paid I believe was about $120.00 and that was to get a pristine barrel.

All of them came with accessory kits so I have a few that I have been selling on eBay.

I find there is quite a bit of value in the accessory kits............... In fact the sum of the pieces is worth much more than the whole.

Mongo back from Mills . . . .   ::)

Good news - yes, they come complete with all sorts of junk, including a bayonet. Century Arms is the distributor.

Middling news - the one on the shelf looks like it could be a Stalingrad survivor - I know nothing about Moisins and they had the trigger guard locked so I wasn't able to check a lot of the gun, but the bore looked clean. It also looked like it needed some cleaning before use.

Bad news - they are now charging $99, not $90. BUT - the gun can be in my hands as soon as I clear the check - and they clear the credit card! I do not need one, I do not particularly want one, but . . . . . .

You like the laminated one? I think there are 3 laminated ones in there someplace.

Oh yeah.  I'm not one to choose wood as a material to put on any weapon, but laminate is pretty!  Especially some of the laminate MN's I've seen.  I've only got a regular 30 and a 44, and neither one is any more accurate than a AK, but that doesn't make MN's anything less of a GREAT gun IMO.  Reliable, powerful, perfectly balanced, simplicity at its finest.

And there's always these out there.  http://www.snipercentral.com/mosin.htm (http://www.snipercentral.com/mosin.htm)

That I'd love to have one day!   ;D ;D ;D

Stop by sometime and we can go to the range and try a couple out. There is a 1000 yd range up the road.

Oh, I had a couple laminated thumbholes made that I liked so I have 8 more on order. Pistol grip, vented forearm, full floating, 3 sling studs, 2 recoil crossbolts.

2 of each color.

You people are evil.  Just plain evil.   I have just sipped the vodka laced kool-aide.

My (first) 91/30 is on order.  It'll also be the first entry in my C&R log.  I went with AIM surplus.

Just how am I suppose to get my 629 stealth hunter? My FN FNAR? My 3" 629?  My 625JM?  The 260Rem with silencer?  My Nitro Air Rifle?, My spare XD9....scratch that.....the new XD(m) 5.25?   Huh?  Huh?   If I keep buying all this junk......I may not get to retire until I'm 80.

BEAUTIFUL STUFF!  There's a "forest green" laminate stock like that on Ebay I've been wanting for my 10/22T.

Wish to God I had the wood working skills to fit something like that to my Ruger .44 Carbine!  I'm just afraid of F'ing up a brand new stock trying.

Uh if you start with thin sheets of your selected wood....how would you mess up a brand new stock?

Title: Re: Deal from AIM Surplus on Mosin-Nagants
Post by: Badgersmilk on July 18, 2011, 09:34:05 PM
My suspicion is that I could carve out an aftermarket 10/22 stock to fit the .44 Carbine.  Their VERY similar in size.  But the .44 has a tube magazine hidden in the stock under the barrel.  I know one guy tried this with a factory 10/22 stock and ended up cutting away wood to get it to fit until he cut through the bottom of the stock.   :( :( :(  The stock I'd wanna use is the same green camo one shown here with a MN in it, but its already cut out for a 10/22.

Only thing I don't love about the .44 is the blah factory stock.

Congrats on the MN!  Your gonna love that thing after you shoot it.   ;)

Alf, while your waiting for your rifle to get there, watch the movie "Enemy at the Gates".

As shown in the movie, at least at one point during the war the Russians were so short on weapons that they gave out a single rifle per a few troops...  Told them "When the guy holding the rifle gets shot.  Pick it up!"  Wanna argue?  They just shot you themselves.   :(

Ah I see what you're up to.    You just have to carve slowly.  Having the correct tools helps, too.   I'd like to think that someday I cold make one from scratch.

I love Enemy at the Gates.   (The fact that Rachel Weisz is in it is irrelevant...........not.)
I do remember that scene with the shortage of weapons.    I think being the 3rd or 4th person in line would be a pretty safe place.  You'd have a couple of people running "blocker" for you and hopefully you could make it to the trench alive.

SO. I took off early so I could practice sitting by the door waiting for the UPS driver.  I'm doing good so far.  But may need a little more practice this afternoon.

Title: Mosin-Nagant arrived
Post by: alfsauve on July 20, 2011, 04:14:08 PM
Okay all you very evil perverts.  And you rest of you are worse.

It arrived.  Satisfied?  Huh?  I now own one.     Never guess where I was when it got here.  My wonderful trophy wife had to sign for it.   See below.

Greasy sucker.  Didn't fully strip it but got most of the grease off and cleaned the barrel.  No hurry as I won't get to the range with it for 2 weeks.  (And why they filled the bayonet hole with grease is beyond me.   Just get the barrel clean.  Stick on the bayonet and....  B L O P ... a glob of grease big enough to cover the whole gun...grrrr)    I'll post some pictures tonight.   I wish the importer didn't have to stamp it, but at least it's very neatly done on one facet of the receiver.  Laser etch I think.   They also assigned their own serial number.   Well it's more of a cheap shooter/toy than a historic collectible.  Original Russian s/n was 056xxx.  My I guess "official" BATF s/n is 1010xxx.  Which they put on the bolt and receiver.   1932 proof mark.  I guess a real collectible would be one that service in WW I and didn't have the importers stamp.

Fun fun.  Now to find ammo at the upcoming gun show.

For those who care....or not.....I was at the doctor's office where she was carving up my weak hand index finger.   Seems I got some shrapnel in the finger without realizing it.  Biological not mineral (or metal) we think.  And it had brought with it some bateria friends.    It had festered and swollen badly.  Nothing like have your finger hacked on without the anesthesia.    Her excuse was giving me Novocaine would hurt worse than the minor surgery, because of the swelling and sensitivity.    I SAID, there very little I can't endure with the proper application of intravenous Valium.    She's the doc, I lost.  At least I got a really big bandage to take advantage of the sympathy factor.
