Hello all!
I would like to get some suggestions on were to get pistol and carbine training.
i have been shooting for awhile now, and would like to know were to go for training beyond the NRA basic classes I have completed.
All replys would be greatly appreciated

First off you need to tell us where you are and how far your willing to travel. Also how much time do you have, enough for full 5 day class or a two or three day class
My first choice is Gunsite, but then it's next door almost.
Bill Jeans, Randy Cain or Louis Awerbuck would be my first picks with Pat Rogers right up there with them for a short two or three day class.
good luck,

I am in Michigan, I am thinking about taking some classes over my vaction.
I would like to go some place wereI can train and the wife can do some sight seeing on the same trip.
I think a three or four day class would do to start. That would you suggest?

If you only take one shooting course in your life, I suggest the GUNSITE 250/350 pistol course. GUNSITE, http://www.gunsite.com/ (http://www.gunsite.com/), is the Mother Church of the type shooting we do, and so many of the ideas and concepts we take for granted came from there. GUNSITE also has what is arguably the best instructor cadre in the world...their instructors are constantly in the Real World, learning and revising techniques.
I think in terms of pure shooting, the Rogers Shooting School is the hardest training in the country and NOT for new shooters!
In Michigan, I think you're going to have to keep your eyes open for a traveling instructor. I'd also consider George Harris at the SIGARMS Academy...some interesting Spousal Unit opportunities in New Hamster!
Here's the link for the training I can personally recommend:

Michael B is spot on with he's assessment of Gunsite and staff. Next time I'll let you (MB) keep Han's shotgun ;D
hshottower: here's what I'd do if'n I was you, make a call to Sheriff Ken Campbell at: (765) 483-3359 or email kcampbell@co.boone.in.us
Sheriff Ken with the blessings of Gunsite has put together a 3 day class at Boone County Sheriff's Range, Lebanon, Indiana or call the Training Coordinator at Gunsite Academy (928) 636-4565 or email coordinator@gunsite.com
I looked at Gunsite's 2007 class schedule, there's a class listed for this coming April 13th, 14th, 15th.
Ken is top shelf his own self and brings in some of the best.
Best of luck and let us know what you decide to do and we look foreward to a after actiion report (AAR)

Tim Brooks

Excellent information everyone!
A Gunsite class in Indiana is to much to hope for.
Looks like I have some calls to make and hopefully a vaction request shortly there after.
I will be more than happy to post AAR.
The bonus is, I won't have to resort to bribery of the spousal unit to get to go.
Yes Dear, I am only going to Indiana not Texas..........but you can come along for the ride if you want. ;)

BTW, I had a long talk with Ed Head at GUNSITE yesterday, and we're going to start airing the GUNSITETip of the Week video as soon as I can schlepp out to Prescott-rhymes-with-bisquit and get them filmed. Ed said it had been too quiet and organized lately, so he was hoping I could come out pretty soon...

So, was Ed looking to you to fix the quiet part or the organized part????

You might also want to give Tactical Defense Institute in southern Ohio a try. Great instructors and facility-check out the site. http://www.tdiohio.com/

Front Sight in Nevada is good. Been a few times. Do not pay retail. Also, Blackwater just took over a range in IL, which would be driving distance for you.
-
I wondered about Front Sight, I get the emails, but I gotta tell ya, Piazza comes across at times like a snake oil salesman, or one of those "get rich quick" dudes that advertise in the wee hours of cable, you know, featuring actors who say "I made $50,000 in ONE day!" Saw the show he started, though, and it looks cool.
Not surprising that civilians are whupping the PD guys butts though, from what I've heard and seen on the range. Scary in a way.

There is also SIGarms Academy - Epping NH.
Great folks, excellent facility, wide variety of courses, plenty of SIG's to try out if you want.
-
I do unconditionally recomment the SIGARMS Academy. Chief Instructor George Harris is a friend of mine, and I've learned a lot from him...I'm looking forward to taking his Carbine Class with a 556 this spring.
I'm reserving judgement on FRONT SIGHT...too much bad karma out there! It doesn't help that he lifted his "original" show ENTIRELY from the SHOOTING GALLERY "Zero to Hero" episodes. I don't mind if you filch ideas...that's what they're there for, btu don't pretend you're some kind of original genius...none of us are! I pal'ed around with SURVIVOR's Producer, Mark Burnett, back in the old days when he was doing adventure rances and putting together the Eco-Challenge...I got most of my original ideas from him (thank you, Brother Mark!).

Have not been to Front Sight, (but do possess an "orange" Expert certificate signed by el Jeff). Based on the newletter/sales promo/training advice::) sent out by front sight, they should be sending royalties to Gunsite. Has anyone else noticed a similarity between Ignatius P. and Borat?
-
mnshooter, i damn near spit lemonade out of my nose when I read your post. That is absolutely on the money - Borat!!

My husband and I have taken several classes from Suarez International
http://www.suarezinternational.com/
and I highly recommend them. Less expensive than the "name" schools but high quality training. They hold classes in different places.
We have taken the AK-47 class and Ultimate Close Range Gunfighting (0-6 feet).

Hi Dagny!! what's going on with you and the big G man? Hope you guys are doin' Great
Welcome to Mr. Bane's forum, I met the bum at Gunsite last March and I felt sorry that I took a Vang shotgun away from him, of course that was before I found out he was famous. ::)
Don't be giving all that hardearned to Gabe. He's sharp, but you should try Gunsite at lease once being you live so close.
PM me some time and my e-mail address is still the same. Wait about a week I'm going out of town again :(
Kind regards,
Tim Brooks

Randy Cain (http://www.guntactics.com/schedule.php) will be in Michigan in May for his Practical rifle and his THG 101. Louis Awerbuck (http://www.yfainc.com/schedule.htm) won't be in MI until August, and only for shotgun this year, as the schedule currently stands.
-
You my want to try Thunder Ranch(OR),also DTI with John Farnam .I had very good luck with
both of schools.

I would consider a Suarez instructor or Gabe himself if I were you.
