Dr. Colin Poole, head of surgery at Ringriket Hospital in Honefoss northwest of Oslo, told The Associated Press the gunman used special bullets designed to disintegrate inside the body and cause maximum internal damage. Poole said surgeons treating 16 gunshot victims have recovered no full bullets.
"These bullets more or less exploded inside the body," Poole said. "It's caused us all kinds of extra problems in dealing with the wounds they cause, with very strange trajectories."
Ballistics experts say the so-called dum-dum bullets also are lighter in weight and can be fired with greater accuracy over varying distances. They commonly are used by air marshals and hunters of small animals.

BRILLIANT REPORTING!!! Only a "dum dum" is going to believe it. How much fun was he having when he made up all that BS? ;D
Put me down for a case of magic "dum dums" in .380! ;D ;D ;D
Hell, they sound so good. I want a case in every caliber I've got! Send the bill to Obama! Just be sure he gets it before his cards are all maxed out on Aug, 2nd! ;D ;D ;D

Only thing I can think of close to that is the Glaser Safety Slug...no owned by CorBon

But "Dum dum" sounds so much more menacing than "hollow point." ::)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dum-dum_bullet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dum-dum_bullet)
An expanding bullet is a bullet designed to expand on impact, increasing in diameter to limit penetration and/or produce a larger diameter wound. They are also known as a Dum-dum or dumdum bullets. The two typical designs are the hollow point bullet and the soft point bullet.
Interesting reading if you believe Wikipedia. I knew much of it already but did get some additional info - like how a civilized soldier is supposed to act when shot.

Only make them in a few calibers, and of those .45 is the only one i can use. Everybodys sold out even at >$50 a box. :(
Need me some of that "Obama money" at those prices! ;)

I can use the .38's in my j frame and GP100 and have been tempted to try some but haven't up to this point.
The indoor range that I use is so picky now days on what they allow, but I would think these would be perfect indoor range ammo.

They are pretty much standard range (indoor ) ammo. designed to turn to powder when they hit the backstop.
The local range here uses Fiocchi brand.
I assume most large companies have a line of them.
For self defense use they are equivalent to standard ball, they won't break up unless they hit bone, ( which of course in SD you would want to penetrate ) maybe not even then.

Here is a pretty good video on them...........

I've got several bricks of the .22lr frangible stuff ("Quick Shok")... Not that impressed with it. Though I have seen it break apart in game as small as red squirrel, regular hollow points and even Remington Viper FMJ does more damage with any consistency in my experience. :-\
Situations could possibly arise where it might be quite nice to have bullets that can't be ballistically matched to a gun though... Just saying...

:o See how those things come apart? Wipe your butt on each bullet before you load the magazine... No Dr.'s gonna stop the infection that bad guy gets! ;D
Lethal every time... Just takes a while! ;)

There are companies out there (can't remember the names) that were selling boutique tungsten powder rounds to folks like airmarshalls. The idea was that they would virtually explode on impact, but not penetrate (sort of like a breeching round, only jacketed) . A very nice courtesy shown to air passengers, and don't think I don't appreciate it. However, they were going for about $70 per 20 and I wasn't going to go there. I also don't see this guy doing it either.
I mean if you're going on a shooting rampage don't you want collateral damage? Just buying the cheapest hollow points you could find would seem to be the better choice. Of course, he is (should have been was) a deranged yahoo.

Wasn't Reagan shot with some sort of exploding Air Marshal bullets. I seem to remember that it was a big deal at the time. Also it was the beginnings of the Brady Bunch.

Learn something new everyday.
Sixteen minutes after the assassination attempt, the ATF found that the gun had been purchased at Rocky's Pawn Shop in Dallas, Texas.[27] It had been loaded with six "Devastator"-brand cartridges which contained small aluminum and lead azide explosive charges designed to explode on contact; the bullet that hit Brady likely exploded in his skull. On April 2, after learning that the others could explode at any time, volunteer doctors wearing bulletproof vests removed the bullet from Delahanty's neck.[23][6]:223

Explode? These bullets had explosives in them?
Ahh...No...just expansion.. here they are http://www.firequest.com/DV22.html
From that link:
It's Awesome! It's Powerful! It's the Ultimate in Self-Defense ammo! Devastator ammunition is designed to produce one shot stops and eliminate the dangers of pass through shots. Its devastating knockdown power comes from the hollow point cavity in each round being filled with a special Detano-Expanding compound. Devastator ammo grossly expands on impact to insure 100% maximum energy is delivered to the target and reduces the chance of a pass through. This makes Devastator with Detonating Tips the ultimate ammo for home defense, personal protection and law enforcement applications. Six rounds per pack.
I guess "explodes" on impact is more exciting than "expands" or "fragments"
