GENEVA (Reuters) - North Korea, under fire for its own nuclear programme, took the helm of the Conference on Disarmament for the first time on Thursday to a chorus of protests and called for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

The ascension of the secretive and Stalinist state to the monthly rotating presidency of the 65-member United Nations-backed talks got the cold shoulder from other countries and drew criticism from human rights groups and dissidents.

Canada did not attend the session, having promised to boycott the chairmanship of what it called a "major proliferator of nuclear weapons.

"Allowing an international outlaw to oversee international arms control efforts is just plain wrong," Hillel Neuer, director of the Geneva-based group U.N. Watch said in a statement.

"North Korea is a ruthless regime that menaces its neighbours and starves its own people and should not be granted the propaganda coup of heading a world body dedicated to peace."

So Se Pyong, North Korean's ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva, did not refer to the controversy as he chaired the talks, attended by all other delegations including South Korea and the United States.

We are still in the United Nations because we have lost the self reliance, moral fortitude and cast iron balls that forged and founded this nation  >:(

We are nothing but a major cash cow and scraficial police force for the nations of the world that condem us for going to war, doing their bidding and protecting their interests.

While everyone is condeming us for our place in Iraq does anyone remember what actually took us there?  Do you remember these facts:  Iraq was under certain restrictions imposed by the United Nations concerning their nuclear capabilities, "weapons of mass destruction," chemical weapons, biological weapons and military mass.  Iraq was to allow full and complete access to any inspection U.N. inspectors wished.  Iraq was blocking inspections, and after delays it was evidenced that rush moves and changes had taken place.  The second vote (yes, Pres. G.W. Bush had authority to go to war, and he went back for a second approval) was gave approval based on United Nations evidence and testimoney that Iraq had broken their U.N. treaty and terms from the first Gulf War.  Where is the United Nations in standing up with us as we do their bidding?

Rant temporarily suspended due to blood preassure issues  >:(
