Title: Jeep parade
Post by: BAC on August 12, 2011, 09:09:17 PM
I live in Butler, PA.  Former home of The American Bantam Car Company, the company that invented the Jeep.  In honor of the 70th anniversary of its birth, there was a Jeep parade through downtown Butler this evening.  Over 1200 vehicles drove through downtown (a world record) and parked.  We went downtown and watched the parade.  I was able to get some shots with my cell phone.

Here's the link to the Photobucket album:  http://s416.photobucket.com/albums/pp244/bchiaravalle/Jeep%20Parade/ (http://s416.photobucket.com/albums/pp244/bchiaravalle/Jeep%20Parade/)

I remember work.

It wasn't exactly a secret.  There's a whole lot o'Jeep stuff going on at the Butler fair grounds all weekend.

I'm trying to forget work. The peep's in the hood need to take BM's advice and start shooting each other with bigger guns. They are such a PIA to take care of.

Unfortunately I work until Monday and will miss everything.  We did catch the regatta last weekend. Kids thought it was cool. Amelia took 3rd place in the fishing derby.  ;D

Good fun!

Bantam sure got screwed in that deal didn't they.  From what I recall, they only got a small portion of the final contract to support the War Department.

Yes, and it would have been a whole lot more if they hadn't limited it to only 1200.   ;D

As I remember it was a matter of capacity, Bantam just did not have the ability to build them on the scale the War dept required.
Not sure how they made out on licensing or Royalties.

Correct on the capacity problem but they did get the contract for making the tow behind carts I think.

Hi;

     This week on American Pickers a woman sold a '46 Jeep restored by Richard Petty for $16,000. There was talk of the Military downsizing the Humvee and the rumor was that it would be like the Jeep X   series vehicle. I had a Jeep assigned to me as a Radio operator and LOVED that Jeep. I wish that they would bring back a version of the original size/design of the 40's and 50's. Something of a "Plain Jane". These newer ones are outfitted too much for me.

Update:  This morning's paper said there were 1300 Jeeps in the parade.

Seems like Wranglers grow and get heavier every single year.  :(  They still sell, so apparently it's what the mass herds want.  ::)

Even if they brought back something M38 sized, it'd be so loaded down with computers and air bags to meet government regulations it'd still be a POS.  >:(
