So, I'm just about to go up to bed. The neighbor texts me and asks if I just got home. He said a car just came up my drive with the lights off.
Now, this intrigued me. I retrieved my shotgun and decided to investigate. For some reason they didn't want to stick around to chat. They left in quite a hurry. Some people have no manners. ;D
I don't know if it was kids screwing around or someone casing the house. They had parked in the shadow of a pine tree half on, half off the driveway facing the house. I guess I won't sleep well tonight. ???

Sleep in shifts? I hope nothing comes of it.
Buy that neighbor a choice beverage. ;)

I have been getting a little lax in not carrying all the time. This did serve as a bit of a wake up call.
-
Probably just two kids making out. :-\

I didn't think of it last night when I first saw this but grab a piece of paper NOW and write down everything you can remember - time, vehicle description, any description of the occupants, etc., what they did, how they did it.

Good chance of that. Especially if the shadowed parking place was the first one providing protection from being seen from the road.
I'd still look into a driveway alarm and maybe borrow a buddies night vision scope for a few weeks if you don't have one.

Driveway alarm and a big@ss spotlight on a remote switch can do a world of good.

OK. So last night I grabbed the 12g. Tonight I put out some claymores. I mean, the claymores do everything the 12g can but so much better. ;D
My driveway is about 100yds long. I'll have to look into the driveway sensors. I have outdoor floods but they are on a switch.
Tonight I'm just sitting with the lights out, truck is in the garage. God bless them if they think no one is home. ;)

Hmmm...that has the sound of premeditation You may want to fix that.
-
Do you think this has anything to do with your current family situation?
-
Go to Home Depot and get a motion sensor for your floods, then kick back and relax. Unless your neighborhood is really bad, or you keep a cache of diamonds in the garage, the motion trigger will keep most crash and grab crooks going next door.

I thought about that before posting. I guess the new castle doctrine would be put to the test.

I doubt it. I would hope that they would know better.

That may just be the winner. It's kind of rural where I live but I think that would be enough of a deterrent.
Of course I keep the diamonds in the garage. Where do you keep yours? My safe has all the valuable stuff in it. ;D

Look, I have no idea of your situation/neighborhood. If you thinkthis was a one off, let it go and maybe buy a loud dog or an alarm. If you have reason to think its serious, report it to the police and have your neighbor give a statement. That way if they do come back, you have dotted your i's. Threat reported, verified, good reason to be afraid. Good luck.

With a 100 yard drive way, along with the motion detector lights you might want to add a "Trail Camera".
Just a thought.

Problem with motion detector lights is they give notice to anyone detected that they have been. Even if they are "casual visitors", like kids just looking to do a little healthy vandalism, they are likely to see if they can find a way around the lights.
Unless you have very good coverage, there may be a path to your house that does not trigger the lights. And even if you do have good coverage, unless you respond to each activation by a passing dog or bigger game if it is in your area, the folks interested in your place will observe and determine how you do respond and, trigger the lights, get to a hiding place that won't be sensed that you do not come out and check and have access.
The driveway monitor will inform you of possible intrusion without giving that information to the possible bad guys. The night vision gear will let you ID those involved without their knowledge also.
As kids, my crowd tended to be adventurous...not anything destructive, well, not very much, but we did like tying doorknobs, sticking doorbells and car horns. Any countermeasures just made it a greater challenge. And most of the simple ones can be defeated.
