Title: My first AR build
Post by: BAC on August 30, 2011, 07:29:23 PM
I got my DPMS Oracle kit built on Saturday.  It only took a couple hours (thought it would be more of a project), but I think it came out OK.  Today the Pmags and scope came.  Can't wait to try it this weekend.  Sure hope it works.   ???

Congrats!!!! Swap that factory grip out for a Falcon Industries ERGO grip. Get some sling rings on the buffer tube,..and an oversize Magpul trigger guard.

Than get a Miculek Compensator.....Cheaperthandirt.com has them for $30.

Test drive it....Than "tweak it".....

Nice Job....

Nice!   ;)
What kind of scope and rings?

TW - I've already decided that the grip has got to go.  I'm going to play with it for a while before deciding on other changes.

CSJ3 - It's a Tru-Glo 4x and it came with the rings.  I don't see any markings on them.

Lookin' cool.

Took me two years to get mine totally put together...still waiting on the dollars for Timney trigger, but the stock on (JP) will do for the time being.

Great job BAC. I forgot to get back with you on FB if you completed the project or not. The Hogue grip is really nice if you have not checked it out. The Miculak Flash Suppressor would be nice but it increases the decibals. Just a heads up on that.

Love that scope and looking forward to a range report. DPMS makes a great rifle and will never give mine up. Enjoy!

Made it to the range this afternoon (in between thunderstorms) to see if I put it together correctly.  Well, I aint dead, so I must have done it right!

Put 20 rounds through to make sure it's working and to mostly get the scope zeroed.

I discovered a couple things at the range:
1:  I like the scope very much,
2:  The Oracle is a go,
3:  My eyes suck even more than I realized.

Starting out at 100 yards, the 4x scope helped, but the target was still too small for me to see clearly (sucky eyes).  I tried my best to get it zeroed at 100, but my shots were all over the place.  Then I moved to 50 yards, which was much more easierer for my old eyes.  Didn't make any adjustments to the scope and fired 10 rounds.  Here's the result:

Not too bad for a rifle and scope I'd never used before (humor me).

The Tru-Glo scope is really easy to adjust.  I hope it's not too easy since the knobs don't lock and are always exposed.  It looks like you can remove the knobs and put them back on at 0 once it's fully adjusted, which will make it easy to reset if they do get moved accidentally (did that make any sense?).

The trigger is lighter and smoother than expected.  Not too bad at all, and it really lets you know when it's reset.  Much better than the M1 carbine trigger, that's for sure.

Anyway, looking forward to getting back to the range for some more shooting and.  Now that I know it's not going to explode, I can let my wife try it, too.   ;D

Shoot, BAC if anyone deserves second in line to shoot it it is your wife.

Heck, now that  you know it is safe, she deserves to be first in line.

Good woman you got there.

Nothing wrong with slow and steady the first time

Yeah!  I had my book and read every step at least twice to make sure I understood it before completing.  It took me a particularly long time to get the Damn holes lined up for the gas tube!

I think my next project is going to be an a1 build.  Kind of a trip down memory lane to my first experience with a gun ever...basic training.  Of course, being left-handed, I'm going to get an upper with a brass deflector, so it won't completely be an a1.

Ahhhh............. I remember my first time..............  Oh, we're talking about guns, yep, guns.

Is there something wrong with leftover parts when you are finished? I thought that meant that I had won or something.  ;D

I took my time, took union breaks, and had the lower complete in less than 2 hours. I was kinda surprised "that was it".

The upper was even easier.

Like a good old American car,....keep it simple.

Same with my M1 Garand,.. Designed to be serviced, torn down, rebuilt, repaired, in the field with tools the soldier would have access to.

My teenage son, had my AR and M1 disassembled, and than reassembled while listening to my old Emerson Lake & Palmer albums...

Oh, What A Lucky Man, He Was....

Good shooting BAC, enjoy it.

Went to the range with the family.  My wife shot the AR (her first time) and did very well.  I may never get it back.  Told her I'd make her one in any color she'd like.   ;D

If she has problems with it jamming, you may want to get her 20 round mags so that the gun is not resting on the mag when she shoots.
Just a thought.

Thanks, I already told her I was getting some 20 round mags for her.
