Title: Range Report for the SA XDm 9mm
Post by: bjtraz on September 05, 2011, 05:25:39 PM
Went to the range today, and the weather was absolutely great! Took a couple of .22's with red dot reflex sights, (look for that report elsewhere) and a new to me Springfield Armory XDm in 9mm.

The XDm performed without a hiccup, with about 170 rounds of assorted 9mm (HP, LRN & Ball). No fail to fire/eject, and brass landed in a neat pile 2' right and 2' back. The grip was aggressive enough to grab, but not so as to be rough. The reloads I was using were low velocity, so recoil was minimal, but I think even with factory loads, it wouldn't of been much different. The trigger was long, but hit a shelf and was easy to stage, breaking around 6 lbs. Most of the shots landed a little left of center (could be me pushing the trigger, still getting used to it), and pretty well centered in height.

I wasn't looking for a XD when this materialized, and am still not sure what roll this will play out of my safe, but i kinda like it. It feels good in my hands, and performs well so far, so it's a keeper. My only question is why the grip safety has to be depressed in order to rack the slide. I'm not sure when/if it will ever come into play, just why?  ???

Looks like fun. At least someone got trigger time on the range today.

That is a minor nit with the XD line.  Having to hold the grip safety to rack the slide.  I haven't looked into it, but perhaps someone has figured out why and more importantly has a mod to disable it.

On the plus side you don't have to pull the trigger to take the gun apart.  In my mind thats a very big deal.

To me, pulling the trigger is irrelevant! Only an idiot even attempts to disassemble a firearm without first checking for unloaded at least three times. I understand they had to change for those idiots, but that "feature" is not a selling point for me.  ;D

Trust me thier are alot of idiots out there...

While yes the chances of that safety aspect coming into play for some one that is practicing safe gun handling, but it still happens all the time.

SA said it was a feture added for malfunction...incase it was needed to remove the slide with a live round stuck in the chamber.  I've never needed to do that but I guess its possable ???

Actually, the safety part comes about in that you are require to lock the slide back before moving the dis-assembly lever.  To me that's where the real safety comes in.    With others you only have to move the slide ~1/10".

Also you don't have to learn the Glock "handshake" (as I call it).

Awwww....the "Handshake" is a great way to impress a Glock owner not familiar with it.  It looks like you just pick the gun up and all of a sudden it is apart.  Eyes wide, mouth hanging open they will ask   "How did you do that?"  Tell them you are a "Glock Whisperer".

P.S.  You can disassemble a Glock without pulling the trigger if you really have to.
