I'm thinking about dropping some green paper like objects for a Mossberg 930SPX. I've read good and bad on it much like any other firearm but I am curious if this is just anti-Mossberg, pro Remington bull crap or is there a real problem with them. I want it as my main goto long gun in the case of an emergency. So, I guess the question becomes, are they reliable shotguns? Is there any REAL advantage, given the planned use for it, to dumping more money for a Remington or Benelli or Beretta?

I think Mossberg make a damn good shotgun for the money. I have a 500 that I keep for a house gun. I think the thing with them is being sure to give them a good run in. Oil the crap out of it, then run a case of shells through it. After a good wet cleaning and re lube, you should be good to go. I've found that if there are going to be any problems that arise from these weapons, they'll generally surface in the first 300 rounds or so. After that, if you keep it properly lubed and maintained, you should be good to go. My Mossberg likes more oil than most all of my other shotguns. They smooth out more noticeably after the first 300 rounds or so, much like a Remington Express 870. Bill T.

Only disadvantage is if you intend to install a stock with a pistol grip, like the Blackhawk Knoxx Stock
http://www.amazon.com/Stocks-SpecOps-Shtgn-Stock-Varities/dp/B001TIHHXU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1315409151&sr=8-2
The stock does reduce recoil a lot, but the 930's tang mounted safety becomes cumbersome with a pistol grip.
The slide release was also cumbersome on my 590 with that stock installed.

The safety could be but the bolt release on this is on the right side of the receiver just below the boot handle so that part is covered.

Don't use Wolf Ammo...
See Kaboom link on the Down Range Page.
Other than that...Mossberg is fine.
Is it for Home Defense, multi-tasking doves, squirrels, and turkey's? All the above? I think the 930 should be just as reliable as the other models.
I like my Rem 870 Express Mag, but that's just me.... ::)

I brought my new 930SPX home today. Can't wait to take it for a test drive. Pics to come as soon as the new stock arrives. I also bought a Bushnell TRS-25 Red dot for it. Nice and small and cowitnesses with the ghost ring sights very well.

Good for you!

The Mossberg 930 SPX I ordered just came in a couple of weeks ago. It shoots great! I used it in a DMG match and shot it. I had problems with steel knockdown targets at about 20 yards using 7.5 bird shot. The patterns got too large and the shot too dispersed to knock down the longer placed targets. I would hit them but instead of falling they would turn sideways. That made them impossible to knock down.
Since the SPX does not have chock tubes I'm going to have to get some gunsmith work done.

Mightn't it be more prudent to buy another barrel with the mossy choke tubes? The cylinder is what you want for SD. Get a @4-28" depending on your ap (I'd recommend 26" unless you are primarily a duck hunter and then you can run from I?C to full. Don't screw with the gun you bought, just make it more versatile.

My primary use is competition and most shots are short. The shorter length barrel works better when you are moving around in a course of fire. I haven't checked to see if Mossberg makes a 18" replacement that will allow chokes. I do need to be able to mix bird shot, buck and slug on a course of fire. The CoF I had problems on required bird shot and slugs.

My bad. I thought you were looking for a GP shotgun that would do SD and hunting/skeet etc.

WatchmanUSA...would suggest a light modified choke tube if you get it threaded for practical shotgun competition...was recommended to me by Kurt Miller, and have about 5 3gun seasons on mine, without any need of change...since we shoot them like rifles anyway, a flip up 10/22 sight and HighViz Flashpoint triangular fiber optic tube makes a good slug combo...

Thanks for the suggestion. The Mossberg SPX has a LPA ghost ring rear with a LPA red fiber front sight. I like it - highly visible & easy to pick up on targets.
If the weather holds there is another DMG match this weekend.
