Violent crime plunges 12 percent in US in 2010

9/16/2011 | APNews

The number of violent crimes fell by a surprising 12 percent in the United States last year, a far bigger drop than the nation has been averaging since 2001, the Justice Department said.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics reported there were 3.8 million violent crimes last year, down from 4.3 million in 2009.

Experts aren't sure why. The expectation had been that crime would increase in a weak economy with high unemployment like that seen in 2010.

The reality is that "we're surprised to find how much it declines," Professor Alfred Blumstein of Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School said Friday.

The big drop dwarfs the 3 percent yearly decline in violent crimes the nation averaged from 2001 through 2009.

More than 80 percent of the decline in violent crime was attributed to a plunge in simple assaults, by 15 percent. Those assaults accounted for nearly two-thirds of all violent crimes in 2010.

The combined total of property crimes and violent crimes was down 6.6 percent last year, from 20 million to 18.7 million.

The numbers come from the National Crime Victimization Survey, which gathers information on nonfatal crimes against people aged 12 or older by questioning a nationally representative sample of U.S. households.

Turning to rates of crime per thousand residents, which takes into account population growth over time, it's clear that the decline in violent crime is part of a long-term trend that began in 1993.

From 1993 through 2010, the rate of violent crime has declined by a whopping 70 percent: from 49.9 violent crimes per 1,000 persons age 12 or older to only 14.9 per 1,000 in 2010.

Half of this decline came between 1993 and 2001. Between 2001 and 2009, violent crime declined at a more modest annual average of 4 percent, but that rate decline jumped to 13 percent in 2010.

From 2001 through 2010, the rate of property crime fell by 28 percent.

The rate for violent crime is based on the number per thousand population. The rate for property crime is based on the number per thousand households.

Blumstein added that "the victimization survey is basically confirming" the FBI's preliminary figures from last May on crimes reported to police during 2010. That early, incomplete FBI data showed reported crime fell across the board last year, extending a multi-year downward trend with a 5.5 percent drop in the number of violent crimes in 2010 and a 2.8 percent decline in the number of property crimes. The FBI's final figures for last year will be released Monday.

Gee, Guns sales and CCW permits have been skyrocketing for several years, especially the last 3-4 years. Coincidence?

With the economy going south, with much of everything else, these Right Wing, Clinger Terrorists are ready to defend themselves, friends, family and property.

This threat of unacceptable, radical, vigilante violence has caused a decline in the downtrodden masses' ability to secure the basics of life, plus some well deserved extras, through their usual means of undocumented acquisitions.

I blame the Tea Party and all us radical, On-The-List, Preppers.

These numbers represent NICS background checks since the program's inception... over 124 million in 12 full years of operation.  That's a staggering number.  And in some states, like Texas, if a person has a valid CHL then a NICS check is not required when purchasing a gun.  Friends, God has blessed us with a great Nation... and an amazing Constitution (that has a 2nd amendment).

It is a result of electing Obama president - although not for the reasons he would like to believe.

It would be interesting to see a regional breakdown of the data.  Preferably with charts, graphs, and pictures so the those of us that are too ignorant to see his brilliance can understand.

Read something a while back, it might have been on here, that "Justifiable killings" both by police and by citizens are going way up.
You think there might be a connection there ?

Hi;

Another possibility could be that there are more states passing "Castle Docturin" laws. The offenders now have to watch over their shoulders.

I doubt that is it.   It could be any number of factors.  just about anything... it could be that our fat and lazy teens are just too fat to go out and beat the crap out of some one... it could also be that a generation of parents got it right.  Who knows.

Property crimes are way up, which always happens when the econ takes a shit.  Gun and ammo sales also always go up during bad econs.

FTA:

a 2.8 percent decline in the number of property crimes.
The FBI's final figures for last year will be released Monday.

This is taken nationally, YMMV if you live in Detroit, parts of Cleavland, Baltimore, or Atlanta, or parts of S. Miami..... and yes TAB, parts of Kalifornia, for sure.

What concerns me is what seems to be a trend toward these "flash mob" crimes.  When a gaggle of young thugs swarm a store, parking lot, or some other public place there isn't that much you can do.  You just have to crank the awareness up to "High" and know where the exits are located.

Good point JLawson, This just happened a couple of days ago.

http://denver.cbslocal.com/2011/09/15/motive-unclear-in-attack-by-group-of-teens-on-16th-street-mall/

They say 10 to 15 young people — described as black or Hispanic and both male and female — attacked four white men on the 16th Street Mall at about 10:45 p.m. on Sunday.

Denver police say the men were standing on the mall near Arapahoe when they were approached by the group. After a conversation, the group turned violent and they attacked the men.

Two of the four victims left the scene before they could be questioned. The Denver Post reported that two of the victims suffered minor injuries.

“It’s really unclear as to what their motivation was — why such a large group of young people came together and assaulted these individuals,” said Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson.

Authorities say the attacks could have been gang related or racially motivated.

“We’re not going to dismiss anything in this case because we don’t know,” Jackson told CBS4.

In 2009 a similar series of attacks took place near downtown, on the 16th Street Mall and in surrounding areas. The victims were usually white or Hispanic and the suspects were black.
Surveillance video captured one of the attacks on camera.

Many of those arrested in connection with the assaults were known to have ties with street gangs. Police said some or all of those attacks may have a kind of gang initation.

Police will confirm that in this weekend’s case the victims were not robbed, which narrows down the list of motives somewhat.

Then I blame the illegals... thousands have left becuase of lack jobs for them.

I'd be intrested to see if that 2.5% decrease, is actually like in $.  If the numbers are down, but the $$$ ammount is up I don't see it as good thing.

I'd also bet lack of reporting is a big part of that 2.5% drop.  several local countys/city have stoped sending LEOs for a lot of crimes.

You don't have to have a cop show up in person to make a report.
Call for a theft from a vehicle for instance, and you get a phone call returned to give you a report # to give to your insurance agent.
A cop may or may not show up but it is still a 'reported' crime.

This is what I love.   THE EXPERTS AREN'T SURE WHY.

BUT these same experts don't hesitate to support, more gun control, warrant-less searches, federal monitoring of our daily activities, etc.   It would seem to me statements like this summarily discredit the "experts".

Yep.....there are more folks carrying guns CCW.....so the tactics of the thugs have changed to 'outnumbering and overwhelming' potential victims. Time to start carrying more spare ammo and knowing where the back door is.

The guy in the second video could have been cleared for self defense up to the point they started to drive away, taking into account it wasn't gang related and the victim did in fact have a knive.

A lot of good points have been made, but perhaps there is something elase going on that isn't apparent.  A lot of state and local governmental units have been downsized in the last couple of years due to budgat cuts, perhaps the reports aren't getting to the feds.

Or maybe this is just the bHo justice department "cooking" the numbers to make themselves look better and justify more dollars for such programs as gun runner.  Maybe it's a "Things are safer now, so it's time to tighten up on gun control" type approach.  Did the methodolligy of the "survey" change?  I wouldn't put anything out of the realm of possibility on this DOJ.

I think the crime numbers are lower due to the $16 muffins.

$16 Muffins, and Taxpayers Pick Up the Tab
By CHARLIE SAVAGE
Published: September 20, 2011

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department on Tuesday came under criticism for “extravagant and potentially wasteful” spending on conferences at the end of the Bush administration and early in the Obama administration, including paying $16 per muffin and $8 per eight-ounce cup of coffee at certain events.

“Some conferences featured costly meals, refreshments, and themed breaks that we believe were indicative of wasteful or extravagant spending — especially when service charges, taxes, and indirect costs are factored into the actual price paid for food and beverages,” said a newly released report by the department’s acting inspector general, Cynthia Schnedar.
The report scrutinized spending at a sampling of conferences from October 2007 to September 2009, focusing on eye-popping calculations of food and beverage expenses. For example, at a four-day conference in November 2007 at the Grand Hyatt in Denver on the “Amber Alert” system for searching for missing children, taxpayers ended up paying $5.57 for each of 1,334 cans of soda.

A five-day conference in August 2009 at the Capital Hilton in Washington to train immigration lawyers saved money by serving only snacks. But it still cost $4,200 for 250 muffins and $2,880 for 300 cookies and brownies, more than $16 a muffin and nearly $10 per cookie and brownie.

The crime numbers have been dropping ever since the sunset of the Clinton era AWB.
This is not a new trend.
