Post by: ratcatcher55 on March 24, 2008, 03:06:32 PM

I learn something new everyday. I didn't know you could put a magazine in backwards.

Well, you know for darn sure she didn't rack one into the chamber.

I have seen this pic before, I always wondered what happened to her.

HazCat,

Hopefully a kindly old Sgt gave her lecture about cover, concealment, and chamber checks before he sent here to some remedial training.

One of my oldest friends once held a armed robbery suspect at finger point when he was a young deputy sheriff. He didn't realize he did not have his weapon drawn till after the incident was over. Scared the stuffing out of him when it was pointed out by the FTO.

Finger point!?  Did he still think he was just playing 'cops and robbers? ;D  Lord, I'll bet he got razzed!! (and probably a new nick name ;) )

He received a commendation from the same FTO for stopping the suspect in a crowded restaurant with nobody getting hurt.
CCH is a big guy 6'5, 240# with some real command authority and he got the guy under control quickly. He was also the first guy to say how lucky he was so the abuse was minimal.

This a fake picture, right? I can't inserted my mags backwards. It looks like a Magpul in the pic, doubt they can be inserted backwards either. Someone with a Magpul try it.

Well if it's faked somebody in her department is probably in for a major problem.

I'm headed home to try it out with my rifles.

"Honey dinners ready!"

"Wait a minute, I'm trying to reproduce stupidity"

"Well dear if anybody can it's you!"

And I did it!

First took the Bushmaster AK Shorty.  Made sure the rifle was clear, then attempted to insert 30 Brownells magazine with 28 rounds of ammo  backwards. No Luck
Took an empty Bushmaster 20 round magazine and tried again. It looked like it might go, gave the base a tap to seat it and Shazam it stuck!
Went back to the 30 round magazine, lined it up and tapped the magazine and it stayed in the magwell.

Now I knew as I was doing it it felt completely wrong going in. And if I pulled down on it to make sure it was seated it popped loose.  Repeated the same stupid move and the magazine stayed in the magwell. Pulled the charging handle back and let it go. No problem because the backasswards magazine was not fully engaged and the bolt slamed home. Any kind of chamber check would have showed any empty chamber.

Took out the S&W 15 and had the same results.

I would be in a coma and known the mag was in incorrectly but under stress and poorly trained it could be done. I have seen folks try and jam a Glock magazine in backwards multiple times at an IDPA match before the light went on.

The opinion at work is with Don that the picture just has to be a set up. I hope so.

Don -

I have Magpuls, I gave it a shot, tried the plastic Sigarms mag that came with the 556, and both do go in a bit, enough to hold the mag in place, but nowhere near enough to get near the chamber. If the mag was loaded I doubt seriously they would stay in at all.

Rifle is a DPMS M4 clone.

That is truly precious Ratcatcher  ;D  Don, I know for a fact they can be put in upside down. Had a pr#ck Sgt. of the guard for a while, he was always prowling around trying to catch sentries off guard, When you let the bolt hit the bottom of the Mag it sounds JUST like you chambered a round, I didn't have problems with him after that. ;D

Two words come to mind...  "your fired"   same thing goes to the person that trained her.

I must be missing something. The mag looks to me like it is in her mag well backwards, not upside down. I cannot duplicate in in either of mine.
Mac.

Mac.

I don't have an AR but just flipping the mag around in my head it seems it could be either backwards or unpside down to get the curve the way it is in the picture.

Upside down still curves forward, and the rounds point away from the shoooter. Good morning. Mac.

Mornin' Mac.

You could make it curve back while it is upside down.  Yes the rounds would face back but this LEO obviously wouldn't notice.

In order to get it in upside down We just rotated it, the curve still went the correct direction, hers is BACKWARDS. Got to be real impressed by those "PROFESSIONALS"

That had to be a photo op setup... that mag doesn't even have the right angle to be inserted very far.

I honestly don't think it's a set up or a photo shop job.

I don't think it is a photoshop job, I think they had her pose for the camera for the paper.  I would hate to hear how bad this hit the PD there.

While that is entirely possible she still should have known how to load it.  I am always amazed at how little LEOs (in general) know about fire arms.  I went to one of those idiot gun buy backs once and the cop they had inspecting the guns as they were turned in was positively clueless (and dangerous).

She could have been set-up by her co-workers (male)
Years ago when I was a volunteer fireman, I went to an apartment fire, apartments on the right of the entrance were involved.
To the left of the entrance, all by herself, was a fireman (fireperson? firewoman?) pouring water into a second floor apartment.  Her fellow firemen set her up.  True, she should have noticed that she was all alone there and there wasn't any smoke coming out of the windows in her area...
