I have 2 "new" bottles of this stuff that I haven't opened. Admittingly they are a few years old. I opened both of them and they don't have that "sweet smell" Hoppe's #9 is famous for. Has anyone opened a new bottle of this stuff recently? I'm wondering if they changed the formula, or if the stuff I have went bad? Bill T.

Please let me know! My wife needs a new bottle for behind her ear, and if they changed I don't know what I'll get her for Christmas ;)

Bad news guys. I just returned from Sportsman's Warehouse with a brand new, sealed pint of the stuff, and it STINKS! They changed the formula. That's sacrilegious! Look what happened when they tried that with "New Coke". How could they be so stupid? If the new formula is "green", I don't need to know another thing, I know based on that alone it will be crap! This stuff is enough to make a maggot gag.
The one thing that made me look forward to cleaning my guns is now gone. "Progress" my ass. Bill T.

Web search seems to indicate that the old stuff contained Nitro-benzine and that plus "banana oil" (amyl acetate) which supposedly gave it it's distinctive smell.
Sounds like they removed the benzine to save the world and life as we know it. Not sure if the banana oil stayed or not.

I always loved the smell of Breakfree CLP. I have the same bottle I purchased in 1990. It has lasted that long. Great stuff.

I still have a half a quart bottle of #9. I'll have to treasure it.

Hoppe's always reminds me of Dad. That was his solvent of choice when I was a kid.
