I'm moving from Ohio back to the great state of New Mexico. Myself and a friend from there are making this a straight drive through the mid west including Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. What recommendations do you wise people out there have as to whether or not I should take extra precautions or what steps would you take if you were making a straight over night 24 hr drive cross country. Obviously my .45 will be on my person but would there be any other recommendations you would make?

I don't believe you will be legal in Ill. (if you get stopped). I live in Ohio also and I would check with Ohio AG web site for reciprical (sp) agreements with other states. Also Ohio rest areas forbid handguns in buildings. Ohio Turnpike also. Other states may be the same.
Good luck.

Check out this website. It might help plan your trip.

Drop down to south to KY on I 65 to I 40 in Nashville, west to OK and you avoid any problems with IL.
Secondly the weather will be milder.

I've reviewed the laws for Illinois and contact the State Highway Patrol and was told to secure it in a locked container while int he state. My biggest concern is to whether there are any areas that might pose a safety concern having to stop in the middle of the night for gas in say St. Louis. But in general when traveling what would you seasoned vets be suggesting as to how to secure and where.

Check out http://www.handgunlaw.us
My main concern would be crossing Illinois. All the othe states on your path allow some kind of concealed carry.
-
I wonder if anyone would think I'd flipped if I went LA via Omaha? ;D
-
Sorry, when you said you would be armed I assumed you meant in Ill. also. I would put ammo in a different lockable case from the guns and keep it up front (back seat) and keep the guns in the trunk or under other luggage in the back. If you have an Ohio CCW the rest of my first post stands. Sometimes the web sites showing laws and agreements are not up to date but that is a starting place.

You said you were driving straight through so I won't mention motels.
If you stop for dinner park where you can see the car at all times. If you stop for a 'rest' one of you stays with (in maybe, depending on area) the car.

Do not break any laws along the way and no one will know you are packing.

With any luck at all, with positive Supreme Court action in Heller, which should motivate Congressional passage of pending national CCW reciprocity, this dilemma may be history, but not in time for your move. Drive safely, avoid the Dew Drop Inn, and do what you have to do. Good luck.

Nate
Are you permitted to Carry Concealed? If yes,by which State?
If you're planning on Open Carry,be aware that it's illegal in both Ok. and Tx. http://opencarry.org/ (http://opencarry.org/)

I have an OHIO CCW. So I do have reciprocity in all the states I pass through except Illinois and TX. However from what I'm reading Texas may honor my permit indirectly. I'm still looking into it.
-
In Texas it is legal to carry a long gun or hand gun in your vehicle loaded, without a permit, as long as your not prevented from owning it in the first place and your not doing anything illegal, step out of vehicle with it on and that's a different set of rules unless your defending yourself or someone else. Also having either visible could be called brandishing.

Former inmate of IL here. DO NOT CCW IN ILLINOIS. If you get stopped you will be made an example of. As noted, gun must be locked and stored, ammo must be separate, not in same part of car. If using a pickup or SUV, you have a real problem, as both cannot be in the cabin with you and gun cannot be in cabin with you.
Stay away from any urban area in IL - gangs have spread, Springfield was (and may still be) a war zone, esp around the capital. Stick to the Interstates. St. Louis and IL suburbs also not good. What the hell, bypass IL and let them know you chose not to spend any money in IL and why. Good object lesson for the gummint in IL, but then also pearls before swine.
Safe driving.
-
The Burbs outside of St. Louis (not in IL) are fine just stay on I-44, don't stop in the city. I've got the same problem going to Louisville for the NRA, I may try to avoid IL. Drive safe and keep a low profile.
-
Stay away from Illinois. In the last 6 months we've had 2 different people in jail on weapons charges that had CCW permits from other states. Illinois gun laws suck :'(
-
Cookie, do you remember how they came to police attention? Mac.
-
One was just a traffic stop, He had put it under the seat and the butt was sticking out. I'm not sure about the other. I think both got pleaded down to mistameaners. But I'm sure the lawyer fees and fines were pretty stiff. Most LEO's in my area are pro 2nd, it's the state police on the interstate that got these two.

In NC, if you get tagged like that ANYWHERE you lose your CCW permit for life. Pretty high stakes, so lots of people just carry, no permit, no nothing. It's an easier hit if you get caught. Used to be $32.50, fine and cost of court and you got your gun back. Don't know about now though. Mac.

Kind of pathetic when it's cheaper to get caught ignoring the law than to try to obey.

The process is the punishment.

Yes, but it's still half the cost of a speeding ticket as opposed to all the hoops you other states have to jump through to LEGALLY excesses your second amendment RIGHT.
