(Reuters) - Apple Inc co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, counted among the greatest American CEOs of his generation, died on Wednesday at the age of 56, after a years-long and highly public battle with cancer and other health issues.

Jobs' death was announced by Apple in a statement late on Wednesday.

The Silicon Valley icon who gave the world the iPod and the iPhone resigned as CEO of the world's largest technology corporation in August, handing the reins to current chief executive Tim Cook.

Jobs, who fought a rare form of pancreatic cancer, was deemed the heart and soul of a company that rivals Exxon Mobil as the most valuable in America.

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve," Apple said in a statement announcing Jobs' passing.

"His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Started in his modest garage, with an "idea"... A true American entrepreneur. The modern equivalent of a Henry Ford.

RIP Mr. Jobs, and Thank You.

Most don't really know that he stole the "icon" based clicky stuff from Texas Instruments back in the early 70's.

At any rate, he was a brilliant guy and has done a great deal for the technology over the years.

RIP Steve!  it was a good run!

The graphical os concept was originally developed by xerox who made a business decision not to enter the computer market so made the graphical interface available to others to develop.  Steve Jobs saw the opportunity and developed the original macintosh to run the graphical os.  What most people don't know is that Steve Jobs hired Bill Gates to develop software for his macintosh for business applications.  Bill never delivered any software to apple, but instead went to xerox for the details to develop its own "windows" os.

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do. - Apple Inc.

RIP Steve

Never bought one of his products, ever!

I was given an old Apple IIe about twenty five years ago, it made a great paperweight, other than that it didn't do much!

Sad he's gone for his family but as to Jobs and Gates, while smart guys, I wouldn't trust either any farther than I can pee!

I do own an iPod but I didn't pay for it, it's a pretty hot pink one the kid gave me when she upgraded to an iphone!

 ;D

Ahh............ I think that was stole from Atari, but I'll research it some more.

Some years back the History channel or Discovery chronicled the infancy of the personal computer including the IBM exec that said (paraphrased) "I don't think people will ever buy a home computer!" or something like that.

On the show, they mentioned that Jobs and Wosniak had visited TI and watched an exhibit that featured icon based displays that they supposedly copied.  Wosniak's history was that of a computer hacker anyways.  They also went on the talk about how Gates obtained DOS (dirty operating system) from some programmer geek in Seattle for about 50K in order to have some kind of operating system to sell his application software to IBM with whom he'd already signed a contract because Jobs had told him to get bent!

Then there's the "back engineered" bios chipset stolen from Compaq back some decades and the list of theft, unethical dealings and backstabing that gives the whole industry a bit of a sour outlook.

These men were pioneers, no doubt but they're history ain't as pretty as some would believe.

Nope, not Atari. Xerox developed a Machine called Alto using the graphical PARC OS, never did anything with it other than wow strangers who saw it (this in the day of green letters on black background). Apple built the Lisa on Alto which later morphed into the Mac.

And yes, IBM went calling on Bill who had very little other than his (developed on DoD funded computers and therefore should have been in the public domain) BASIC interpreter and compiler. IBM courted Digital Research, but the Pres/CEO/Grand Poobah went surfing that day, blowing off a set appointment with IBM - who was in the process of buying parts to put together as the first IBM PC. Gates scrambled, bought the OS that became PC-DOS from guys in WA state, licensed it to IBM, and the rest - as much as we know - is history.

Yeah, you guys are right, my bad!

I was thinkin' along the lines of Bushnell's graphics advances that were stolen and used by both Jobs and Woz!

When obama said he was gonna "take care of Jobs" i didn't think he would go this far!

Jobs loss has gone from 9% to 100% in just one day!

The last thing america needs is to lose even more Jobs

So two cancer cells are sitting on the corner, one says to the other "I am tired of being poor!"
The other says, "I agree, let's get Jobs

Steve Jobs have just died. This will shake Apple to its core
