Like the title says, I'll be starting the retirement paperwork this time next year after 20yrs in the Navy ,Active and Reserve. Not much chance of me advancing and I'll be at high year tenure, and forced out, at 22 yrs. The wife says I can get something cool so I figured I'd start saving now. Between extra Reserve pay and per diem from work travel I should easily hit $2K-2500, maybe more in a year.

After reviewing your choices. (Big Congrats! BTW) I went with the M1A.

Here's my son at the range with a fellow "Retired Military" members M1A. I prefer the natural wood, but it is, as I'm sure your aware, that bad ass of a rifle.
After getting my CMP M1 Garand, The evolution of taking a Garand action, and putting a 20rd. mag on it, is downright awesome.
Not knocking your other options, a good AK is always a solid choice, and cheaper to shoot.
BUT,.....I'll have an M1A some day, they are that good. Sigs and 1911's will always be popular, but the M1A is like looking at a supermodel of rifles.
FWIW, Congrats again, just don't take up Canasta and shuffleboard.... ;)

I was thinking Sig, then I got all self-centered and suggested the M1A. See, I'm going to sell mine, it is a safe queen at this point, plus I can throw in a ton of gen-u-wine GI magazines. It has a Springfield scope and mount too, plus a few other goodies.
Not to mention I now know how much you're willing to spend . . . . . . ::)

I voted M1A. Shot a borrowed one in High Power comp but prefered my Garand when I got one from the DCM. Second choice would be an AR in .308 just because I prefer .308! Wish I had someplace close and free to shot HP rifle I'd pick up something.

PS: The Ruger looks interesting also!
