This story from the Florida Current http://www.thefloridacurrent.com/article.cfm?id=24940585 might have it all: a tough-talkin' Southern legislator, a cop-killer, and the final touch: A chat in the local Waffle House that leads to a call to reinstate firing squads (something Utah still does, I think).
A bill filed Tuesday by Rep. Brad Drake, R-Eucheeanna, would allow for executions by firing squad. HB 325 would eliminate Florida's standard method of execution, lethal injection, and allow for executions only by electrocution or firing squad.
He said he filed the bill after overhearing a conversation in his district this past month while U.S. Supreme Court deliberated over the fate of Manuel Valle, convicted in the 1978 murder of a Coral Gables police officer. Valle's lawyers filed numerous appeals, the last few of which centered around the use of a drug used in lethal injections.
In a Waffle House in DeFuniak Springs, Drake said he heard a constituent say, "'You know, they ought to just put them in the electric chair or line them up in front of a firing squad.'" After a conversation with the person, Drake, 36, said he decided to file the bill.
"There shouldn't be anything controversial about a .45-caliber bullet. If it were up to me we would just throw them off the Sunshine Skyway bridge and be done with it," Drake said.

.45? ??? Hi-Point Carbine's?....
I think there are too many candy a**'s in Florida politics to take this seriously, however, they need to follow firing squad tradition.
Rifles, with a true rifle caliber. Cigarette, Last words, Blindfold/hood. 5 shooters, 4 had bullets, 1 had a blank.
Hey Just like Utah...used to very recently... :-\

A firing squad doesn't have to use a rifle, although most pistol hits don't kill out right.
Besides Beretta CX4, HK UMP45, and a few M-4 variants are 45 carbines ;D
-
I'd rather die on my feet than strapped to a chair, and I think I would do without the blindfold if it was optional.
-
Much cheaper to shoot them than it is to inject or zap them.
Be a good start on budget cutting. ;D

Lever action in .45 Colt. ;)

45-70?
-
You people forget, it's not YOUR money, Mosin Nagant, or a Tokarev to the back of the head, weapons and ammo are cheap ;D
-
Hell, I bet the department still has a bunch of 30-30s around somewhere.
-
But what if the citizens want firing squads for Florida lawmakers? Somehow, that seems to make more sense.

Only at the County level, you seem to have some pretty good ones at the State and Federal level.

Use a rope it is reusable. Maybe five or six hangings before you need to replace it.

I suggested death by firing squad at lunch today, but I insisted on pellet guns.... ;D

And Y'all have given reason number 1,056 why capital punishment is a bad idea. Are these guys guilty? Yes. Are they in desperate need of a good killing? Yes. Will we miss them when they are gone? No.
That said, capital punishment means giving the state an amount of power that makes me nervous. It also means endless appeals because none of us trusts the state to get it right when it comes to a trial and there is no chance to fix an error. Then there is the question of the method of execution. At some point, when the scumbag is at your mercy it stops becoming a question of what kind of person they are and it becomes a question of what kind of person YOU are. The Bible makes that pretty clear in the book of Matthew with the story of the unfaithful servant. Personally I shed no tears for these guys, but it just seems cheaper and easier and a whole lot smarter to send them to life without parole. Either way they are gone for good. Who really gives a damn about how it comes to pass. Please note that this is not a bleeding heart position. Its just cold hard realism. Get them gone and I don' t care how. As long as they will never walk the streets again its all good as far as I'm concerned.

There's the liberal idiocy of the FQ we (sort of ) missed !
Capital punishment may not be perfect but over the last 6,000 years it has worked considerably better than anything else that has been tried.
As to the imperfections of the system, the number of people being released due to DNA evidence is not a condemnation of the system at all, but in fact proves that reasonable successful efforts are made to minimize the number of innocents wrongly convicted.
Considering the average time on death row the anti DP argument ignores the fact that Capital punishment is simply one punishment, it is no better to put an innocent person in prison in the first place than it is to inflict any other punishment on him.
