are these 2 differently named rifles identical as far as buying & fitting after market (e.g. Tapco) furniture is cncerned?

I've had both and I never found any difference between them.

Great, thanks Tom

There is an issue with quality of components.. Usually doesn't amount to much....There is barrel Flex as illustrated:

The last link gets to the "nitty gritty" of the differences...
FWIW....I miss the $99.00 Norinco days,.... :-\ I would still be getting the Cosmoline off of them,....but it's an AK... 8)

Remember 922r before putting furniture on it unless you keep the thumbhole design.
I have a MAK91 w/bipod that works well but I HATE the POS thumbhole stock. One of these days it is going to get converted with enough American parts to make it like it should be - a pistol grip weapon.
Parts count, counts. Check the link below....

A 2X6 with a hole drilled through it. That was why I sold mine, that was back before the after market craze.

And that's if you shoot right handed....left handed it's even WORSE!

I have Tapco T6 stock ,intrafuse forend. SAW pistol grip, and forward pistol grip ready to go on this (not mine) MAK90.
I'm bored and confused trying to understand what else SIMPLY needs to be changed/added to make it 922 compliant - anyone got the dumbass Cliffs notes version? - I'd be eternally grateful :)

Simply put, at least 3 more items on the 922(r) list. The "forward pistol grip" is irrelevant as it was never part of the original rifle. Assuming the receiver is US made, then you need to change out 2 more parts - barrel, muzzle device, bolt, carrier, trigger or any of the other little fiddly bits that make it go bang - any 2 of those. Check out the 922(r) link above for the whole list.
-
The 922 BS was actually a blessing in disguise when I modified my Saiga. Changing out the trigger group actually improved the shootability of the rifle quite a bit. American made verses Russian made.
This is the list I used for my conversion.

The magic number is 5 for a Saiga, but I would check to see if this true for the AK. Its about a majority of US parts. Remember that US mags count as three parts, mag, spring and follower ::), yeah it makes no sense to me either, but go with it. HOWEVER if you count your mags as compliance parts you cannot have any foriegn AK mags in your possesion lest the ATF find that you are no longer compliant. This is true even if you buy them for a seperate and compliant AK. Personally I'd just swap out the trigger group and put the stock on the thing. That should (but double check) make you kosher and you can use whatever mags you want. Go to the Saiga forum, they have a great FAQ on what you need to do be compliant. Its very simple and lists a lot of parts options. They're good folks to chat with about all things Saiga and AK as well. They have a pretty good classified section for stuf like mags, scope rails etc.

I wouldn't worry about it.
If you leave it stock it's legal or they could not have imported or sold it.
If you change anything you will be using US parts because it's dumb to pay more for overseas made copies of TapCo parts.

Its the mags that make it an issue Tom.

I won't say you are wrong.
But I will question that, since I'm pretty sure that most of them come with foreign made mags.
Any body know for sure ?

As is, they can be used with any mag. Like you said: "If you leave it stock it's legal or they could not have imported or sold it.

The issue comes up if you make stock/pistol grip/handguard changes, are there enough US made parts to have the change legal?
If you just slap on the proper AK style furniture, you still have 13 imported parts and that's not kosher.
However if you also change trigger, piston and hammer, you can get to the magic count of only 10 import parts that makes it OK to use any mag.
Using a US made mag and counting it as 3 parts instead of changing T/P/H means NO commie mags allowed. It's dumber than mud but we are talking about the .gov after all.

What else would we expect from people who could not make money running a whore house. ???

Mags count as three parts, body, spring, follower....
This is an old 922 debate....and I would like "someone" FQ,...to show me the 922 non-compliant arrest record for the last few years by the ATF (and really big fires)...
Saiga (and others) have sold a (insert expletive)load of AK's and variants, including the Drago pistols, FNFAL's....from classicarms.us, J&G, etc,..
I hear no complaints about those K-31 Schmitt-Rubin's, Moisin's, Yugo's, VZ's, and a bunch of others....
Buy American mags, change the stock to a Tapco , shoot and enjoy it.
When the zombies come,...at least you'll be glad your 922r compliant,... :P
-
The guy I'm fixin' it up for already has some Tapco mags and he just brought me a G2 trigger mechanism and US made muzzle brake - that should do it. I'll put it together tomorrow maybe. Thanks for the imput everyone, MP

Because they are so much more powerful and deadly. ::)

Does anybody know if there is a grandfather clause for 922r. What I would like to know is if an AK varient was imported before a certain date is it exempt from 922r? If so, what is that date?
-
Here is a good link that explains a bit about 922r.

If there is it quite possibly applies to the MAK.

yep, becuase a ak with a 30 round "banna clip" is more deadly then a M1 and a 8 round internal mag with a clip.
you start at 1000 yards, will see who wins. ;D
