Title: The big brown truck just brought a shiny (well matte really) new toy
Post by: bafsu92 on October 21, 2011, 04:32:18 PM
All the talk a few weeks ago about a SBR 300aac/blackout was just more than I could take. My Noveske Diplomat 5.56 upper was sold off and this guy was sent in to take its place. Now all I need to do is save up the cash to put a can on it. Until then I guess they'll just have to hear me.

Here's a question Basfu. What's the accuracy like on these SBRs? Lets assume its a 25 feet to 25 yard weapon, and this is how we should judge it. How does it compare to some of the nice pistols I know you own? If you stretch it, how does it do at 50 and 100 yards? Just curious.

I'm expecting this to be good to go to 200yds at least. With my Noveske Diplomat upper I never had a chance to take it to a range longer than 100yds but it was every bit as accurate out to 100 as any of my 16" barreled AR's. I figure a 5.56 from a 7.5" barrel wouldn't really have a use past 100yds but it really hadn't started to seriously drop or anything. I took the 1-4 scope off my 3-gun rifle, threw it on the Noveske and laser boresighted it. It was on paper with the 1st shot at 100yds about 3 inches lower than on the 16" barrel. I'm not sure if it was from bullet drop or just that it was only laser bore sighted. This AAC upper is a 9" barrel and I've got a friend who has a 10.5" barrel blackout that chrono's a 150gr bullet identical to what his 16" arsenal AK does with a 147gr bullet. I guess you can figure the effective range of this rifle is going to be every bit of what a 16" AK is but with better accuracy.

FQ, one of the things Bafsu mentioned in the thread about the .300 Blackout cartridge was that, being designed for shorter barrels it developed much more velocity than the .223/5.56 in the same length barrels.
Heres the link.

That's very cool Basfu. I'd just assumed that SBRs (cool toy factor aside), were initially  optimized for kicking in doors. That to me means across the room, or at most, across the street ranges. Anything else would be considered gravy. In short, I had always viewed them as the modern version of the M-1 carbine, a niche weapon. Of course they have the added, and very real,  advantage of being able to swap barrels and turn a "pistol plus" into a real rifle. However, if you can get decent accuracy, much less decent velocity at 100 yards yards plus, I stand corrected.

And for anyone concerned that the 300aac/blackout is going to just be a novelty or boutique round this is an interesting article. It looks like Remington is going to be putting full support behind it. I can't predict the future but everything I've heard, some directly from a AAC employee is this round is here to stay. I'd guess it will be more common than both the 6.5 grendel and 6.8 spc combined. If they end up getting some plinking ammo down close to .50 a round it will be very hard to beat.
