Title: Wish me luck..
Post by: Mericet on November 15, 2011, 09:54:17 PM
Today was the deadline for me to apply for a scholarship from the Friends of the NRA here in North Carolina. While the money comes from them, the application goes to the college (my instructors). I think I was the only one that went to the trouble of obtaining the document in electronic form and typing it out. I also had to write a short piece stating why I was qualified for and why I believe I should be selected for the scholarship. Here it is:

I am a proud naturalized citizen of the USA who firmly believes in the Constitution, especially the Second Amendment. I support the work of the NRA in defense of the Second Amendment and am a Life Member. I recognize the importance of the Friends of NRA and continue to support them. Academically, I am maintaining excellent grades. I have integrated well into college life and represent my fellow gunsmithing students on the Montgomery Community College Student Government Association where I also serve as the Public Information Officer. I am also member of the Phi Beta Lambda club, will be joining the newly formed Montgomery Community College Trailblazers Shooting Club and am a Range Safety Officer. I am meticulous in all my endeavors and strive to do everything to the highest possible standard. Even though I get high accolades for my work I always look at it critically and look for elements to be improved upon. I truly believe a gunsmith is an artist that uses a canvas of wood and steel. My passion is to create art in wood steel and my desire is to be counted as such an artist.

Now comes the waiting part......

Good Luck Mericet.
You say you're a "Proud naturalized citizen".
I say I don't know where you came from but I hope they send us more like you.

Best of luck, Mericet. If you need any character references, you should be able to get quite a few from here. Many of us are Life members or higher even.

Unfortunately, I was not chosen. The two guys that did get the nod have already finished all of the required projects for the semester. Looks like that counted against me. Still, I was glad I had the opportunity to be in the running. And I know the fit and finish on my projects is the best in the class.

Keep on trying to be the best and the accolades will come eventually!  Having pride in your work is something that this country is losing at an alarming rate.

The society that has given a ribbon for just participating has lost the edge.

Keep aspiring to be the best at whatever you do and you will always succeed!

I guess there is, as in most things, a trade off between quantity and quality.

Seems that balance is something craftsmen will learn with experience and the needs of their "niche".

My take is that, with the beginners, the ability to produce quality should get the edge.  A craftsman who produces the highest quality work can back that off for quantity issues very much easier than a quick but poorer quality craftsman can learn the skill and discipline needed to produce maximize quality.
