I was shopping at the local Academy (Texas sporting goods chain), getting some news shoes for the kid, when I was drawn to the gun counter (imagine that). As has been the norm around here, there was the usual lack of any deals to be had on .223 ammo. However, I found 6 boxes of 55 grain, soft point Monarch (Serbian made). I've never heard of it, but it was $8.42 per box, so I thought i'd try it out.
Anyone had any experience with Monarch Ammo?

Nope never heard of it. But if it is reloadable I hope you bought ALL of it.

I did, all six boxes. The store says it goes out as fast as it comes in.

Thats because it's relitivly cheap, and its there !

Haven't heard of Monarch but based on my previous post, "Wolf Ammo", sometimes you get what you pay for,.
You may not have any issues with it as I did with Wolf, but a friend an I just split 1000rds of PMC .223 from Ableammo.com
for $360.00. (36 cents a round), for New Ammo.

I pulled this off of a string on AR15.com. This was the most in depth response, but others commented on how dirty the ammo seemed to be. But, nothing about any failures to go bang...
"I bought a couple of boxs of .223 Monarch once to try it out.
I have only fired about 40 rounds of it and am kind of leary about running too much through my rifle. Maybe I am over cautious, I don't know too much about the ammo beyond what I observed while shooting it at the range.
The first thing I noticed about it when I shot it was the smell. They must use A LOT of sulphur in the gunpowder compaired to other manufacturers because it really smokes and stinks when you fire it off. It also seems like the casings are laquer coated. If it is I don't want one of those casings glueing itself in the breech when the barrel gets too hot, if that is the case. When I got home from the range after shooting the Monarch, I noticed my rifle was very dirty compaired to when I shoot Lake City or WWB Ammo. There was alot of powder residue all inside of the barrel and upper.
on the other hand, every round I fired went bang, my rifle did not go Ka-boom and I can't see any evidence of laquer fouling the breech of my barrel."

A local farm store sells Remington 55 gn. for that price, but you have to catch it when they have it . It doesn't last very long. I'm going tomorrow to see what they have. If they don't I'll go to Wally World, it's about a quarter higher there.

Yeah if you can get it a wally world. Anymore they are always out of a lot of ammo. :-\

Wolf .223 ammo has the lacquer coating also. Tends to melt off and coat the barrel when it gets super hot. My gun guy said as long as you clean it after use (especially the breech) you should be O.K. Now if you go out and blow away 1000 rnds continuously I would suggest cleaning after the first 500 or so. Or at least check it out. I personally have never had a problem with my Bushmaster. Then again I don't usually go out and blow away 1000 rnds at a time.
