I am thinking about a bolt action rifle in .22 LR and a scope to go along with it. The purpose for this rifle is for plinking and target shooting (silhouette). I would like to keep the total package at $600 or less. The range where I'll shoot the rifle has a max distance of 100 yards for silhouette targets. I was thinking about a model from Savage or CZ.
Given the intended purpose, what would you pick and why?
Thanks in advance for your input!

See if you can find one of the older Savage/Anschutz .22 Bolt action rifles. They are a very accurate rifle for the money.Anschutz quality without the high pricetag. As for a scope, the rule of thumb is that the scope you put on the rifle should be about twice the cost of rifle,BUT that was before the advances in scope technology of the last 10 years or so. Check out what is available to see what you like,I would suggest an adjustable objective that will go as low as 25 yards for parallax and would suggest no more than a 10 power unless you have a rock steady platform you're shooting from.Hope this helps.

I like the CZ 452. Have on in .17HR2 and really like it.
Why not a Ruger 77/22?
Then I keep trying to get somebody to buy a Weihaurch HW 66 or even better the HW 66 Jagd-Match.

Course that'll kinda blow your budget.
Maybe just a HW-60J?

Take a look at the Savage Mark II. Like all Savages I owned or shot, they are top quality shooters at bargain prices. I have one in .17hmr, and am planning on one in .22lr. For the price of a 10/22 you can get this in synthetic/SS, which leaves lots for a scope or sight package of your choosing.

The savages are where I would start. I would definitely stay with .22 rather than .17 just for the ammo cost and availability alone. There are some cool old German guns out there. I might spend a little time trolling gunbroker. Particularly if you don't mind a bolt action single shot RWS used to make a sweet one. I haven't seen one in eons though.

+1 on the Savage MKII with the accu-trigger I have one with a Bushnell Banner 3x9X40 and at 50 yards it will make a clean hole averaging about an inch and a half and it opens up a bit at 100 but nothing drastic. The triggers are adjustable down to 2.7lbs also mine felt fine from the factory where it was at so I have not touched it. It has no creep or side play and is very smooth also. Hope this help you out.

Accutrigger Savage is awesome in 17 HMR. All my 22 ammo is for the pistols since I bought one. The same can be had in 22 pretty cheap.

I have to 2nd this. I love my Savage 17hmr and it even comes in a LH version which I require in a bolt gun. I've been thinking about getting another in .22 but I don't really need it since I have a few different 22 autoloaders and a couple 22 lever guns. I like the 17hmr so much I picked up a 4" Taurus revolver in 17hmr to go with it.

Did you get anything yet?
For $600 TT&L w/optics I'd go CZ. I have an 452 FS in 17 HMR and a couple of CZ centerfires. Savage makes a fine gun also according to friends who own one and they look good...I just don't have one. Surprisingly, the Marlin bolt action 22's are nothing to sneeze at. Add an aftermarket trigger from Rifle Basix and you can shoot in .22 just as well as with the CZ's and Savage's...trick with all of them will be which ammo they digest the best. With the Marlin you'd have some change left.

The 452 cost me just over 500 out the door. That doesn't leave a lot for optics in your budget.
The 77/22 was 450 out the door. Again, doesn't leave alot for optics.
If I had to chose between them, I don't think I could. They are both gorgeous to me!

I'm shooting light rifle with a couple guys. One has a Browning A bolt, and the other has a CZ452. They are both using the BSA Sweet 22. About $150.00 if you look around.

These guys shoot both indoor (50') and outdoor (50' to 50 yards), and they love them.
