Holsterless Carry, Etc.
By Jerry Ahern
There are several ways of carrying a handgun sans holster. There is the excellent Barami Hip-Grip for many revolvers (this is a product I would never be without as long as I owned a J-Frame Smith & Wesson). There is a great device called the Covert Carrier, which is along the same lines as the Barami product (albeit a much different treatment) and allows carrying small guns like a Seecamp .32 or .380 tucked into the belt without a holster.....

I mounted the factory belt clip on my P3AT when new. I have carried it IWB right below the watch pocket all day and was for the most part, unaware it was there. No way to quick draw, but still pretty quick with practice. Even with a tucked T-shirt it is invisible and accessible. Still, when possible, it's the .40.

Thanks for the tip. As a southpaw, it is sometimes difficult to find a comfortable carry rig, especially a shirt and shorts wardrobe style to fit my Walther .380.
I will certainly look into it.
Thank you.

The Barami looks interesting, but clearly not compatible with the CT laser grips I've got on the Mod 60. Too bad.

I carried "mexican" for a long time with a 5 in. Star BKS 9mm , at the 6 oclock position . Problem with these new grip clip thingys is you need 2 hands to make a draw quick . great for deep cover or a bug.

This is a little off topic, but has anyone tried the appendix carry position? Should the holster be canted? Back like crossdraw or forward like strong side carry? I've been trying it and it seems really uncomfortable when sitting, and I really don't like where the barrels pointing!
Still, I like to give all the options a reasonable try.

Funny you should bring this up , after talking with Roger Phillips aka "sweaten bullets" I have gone to " appendix" carry. it used to be called "mexican" carry before we had holsters lol I carry at 1 oclock . Some great reasons I think this is the best way to carry on the street. 1 retention, you have control over the weapon at all times. 2 quicker draw than any other position. 3 no "bump " frisks 4 great when driving and you can pull quick from the seated position. 5 you never print when bending over or moving in an unnatural way. the holster we use is http://www.gunnersalley.com/product/H715 I highly recommend this type of carry.

Although I've outgrown it, for years I used a belly band holster, but under my armpits. Any loose fitting shirt with blousy short sleeves worked great, even tucked in. You could literally cross your arms across your chest and slide your strong hand through the sleeve of your weak arm and put your hand in a firing grip on the pistol and no one was the wiser. You have to meticulously keep the pistol clean and oiled as it is subject to normal sweat during the day, and wash the holster to keep it from smelling. With long sleeves you would just pop the buttons on the front if in a hurry. The pistol was kept just under the weak arm shoulder. It also had sleeves for 2 extra mags and doubled as a money/wallet carrier.
If your going to Mexican carry at least use the old OSS, trick, get some twine and make a loop, place the loop through your belt, between your belt and pants and you have 2 semi circles. Slide the pistol through both semi circles, and into your pants and that will prevent the pistol from lower itself through your pants. This can and will happen, especially with small frame auto's. If you have a high front sight or a square front sight it may snag. The OSS used this as even being caught with holster in enemy territory was grounds for arrest. If anyone found the string on the ground, well it was just string.

Never tried IWB as I always thought it would be to uncomfortable but he other night after cleaning my 5 " 1911 I thought lets see what its like so after making absolute sure that it was clear I stuck in in just behind my fat hip and thought wow not bad so I sat down and again wow not bad , moved into different positions and the same thing. Now I am looking for a new holster and boy there sure are a lot of those to pick from!

I'm a recent fan of Rocketman holsters for IWB. Dunno if he makes 'em for 1911s though. Either way, it's worth a glance at his site. http://www.rmholsters.com. The IWB holsters don't look like much in the pics, but they're very comfortable with good retention and fit. And mine haven't slid around at all on my waistband. (I have two, one for a compact, and one for my full-size)
